SCOTUS strikes down gay marriage bans, legalizing marriage equality nationwide

Scott Walker further pisses on any chance he ever had at the presidency.

I believe this Supreme Court decision is a grave mistake. Five unelected judges have taken it upon themselves to redefine the institution of marriage, an institution that the author of this decision acknowledges ‘has been with us for millennia.’ In 2006 I, like millions of Americans, voted to amend our state constitution to protect the institution of marriage from exactly this type of judicial activism. The states are the proper place for these decisions to be made, and as we have seen repeatedly over the last few days, we will need a conservative president who will appoint men and women to the Court who will faithfully interpret the Constitution and laws of our land without injecting their own political agendas. As a result of this decision, the only alternative left for the American people is to support an amendment to the U.S. Constitution to reaffirm the ability of the states to continue to define marriage.

Recognizing that our Founders made our Constitution difficult to amend, I am reminded that it was first amended to protect our ‘First Freedom’ - the free exercise of religion. The First Amendment does not simply protect a narrow ‘right to worship,’ but provides broad protection to individuals and institutions to worship and act in accordance with their religious beliefs. In fact, the Wisconsin constitution explicitly protects the rights of conscience of our citizens. I can assure all Wisconsinites concerned about the impact of today’s decision that your conscience rights will be protected, and the government will not coerce you to act against your religious beliefs.

I call on the president and all governors to join me in reassuring millions of Americans that the government will not force them to participate in activities that violate their deeply held religious beliefs. No one wants to live in a country where the government coerces people to act in opposition to their conscience. We will continue to fight for the freedoms of all Americans.

I love it when conservatives get all up in arms about "unelected judges," when none of them seem to have a problem with a bunch of unelected judges redefining the 2nd Amendment in DC v Heller. Fuck off Walker and fuck off conservatives.

So my only question is is there anything left to do in terms of legal rights for folks of differing orientations in the US, or is it just celebration time now?

Oh, this is just a start. There's still a lot of work remaining to be done. Employment rights, public accommodations, remaining cultural views, etc. And that's just some of it.

Dining on salt:

This is SO bad. I’m just glad I don’t live near any coastlines or fault lines. This is going to be a real SHTF time. Just the other day, a tree, must have been at least 50 years old, just a few blocks from where I work, blue down in a freak squall. Big trees are not supposed to just uproot for no reason. Bad omen? You betcha. Reckon I’ll be stocking up on bottled water and batteries.

It was the worst of times, it was the end of times.

How can you look at Gay Marriage as the fucking apocalypse jesus christ.

So glad I can call off my ban of Chik Fil A now. :)
Congrats to all who can get married now!

I-I never thought this day would come.
Mark it down for the history books everyone 2015/06/26 the day democracy faltered, the day our values were destroyed, the day the rebellious youth went against morals and human decency, against all that is holy and pure.

There's often a fine line for these sort of deals.

For example, regarding marriage rights for homosexuals. The general populace is indecisive/against it. So it requires government intervention.
Regarding marijuana usage. The general populace is indecisive/pro usage. But the government is against it.

1. 63% support gay marriage.

2. Less than 20% of Americans approved of black/white marriages in the year that interracial marriage bans were ruled unconstitutional (67). Do you disagree with that ruling?

Enjoy a Spicy Chicken sandwich for me!

I am sickened and disgusted. Horrifyingly embarrassed, even.

Because Australia is still slacking on this shit. Congrats to all Americans on your new freedom. Y'all got any more of them green cards?

You're not Jesus, dipshit. You're just a bigot being left behind (as it were). May I recommend http://rr-bb.com/forum.php for your foruming needs.

This is great. This is so great. Those tears in that forum. Those tears. Holy shit.

This has been the goal of Satan all along. Since Israel was reborn as a nation in 1948, a miracle God made possible by using the USA to win WW2, I believe Satan went after our country with a red-hot vengeance in order to destroy the Gospel.

In less than 70 years he has finally succeeded in rendering us another S & G. We are done.

Some of the chat on SCOTUSblog yesterday suggested that theoretically, post-presidency, Obama could be nominated to the Supreme Court; apparently Taft was.

Now that's a hellscape for the right!

No way he gets through the nomination process today.

That, and they were elected via confirmation in the senate.

Fucking hell. Weddings are going to become even more expensive.

I don't understand. I may have missed something. More people getting married would draw down the cost if anything.(It wont though)

Edit: you guys are right, I don't know what I was thinking. I really need to stay off Gaf at work.

Taft's dream was Chief Justice, he got pushed into the Presidency and wasn't exactly disappointed about his loss. Harding making him Chief Justice was his proudest day.

Yeah states' rights is the same garbage argument they were using in the 60s (both the 1860s and the 1960s for that matter). It's OK to oppress a minority group's rights if we only do it state by state right? Pure garbage.

The state's right argument is and was part of the Southern Strategy as a mask for being pro-segregation, anti-civil rights without saying it because the federal government was intervening to enforce equality. Here's a wikipedia link that has a lot of information and I think a recent thread here talked about it.

It's not going to happen, but man I'd love that so goddamned much.
