SCOTUS strikes down gay marriage bans, legalizing marriage equality nationwide

This Supreme Court thingy seems rather important. I might have to hold my breath and vote for Hillary even though I don't like her.

I still find it amazing that both Spain and Brazil legalised same sex marriage. Spain being one of the first countries to do it baffles me even more.

Anyone has a good article about how that happened ?

And yeah congratz 'murica ! Thanks to you we're one step closer to the end of the World ! Lord have mercy on us !

I don't have an article on it, but Brazil was through a supreme court ruling as well. The state of Rio de Janeiro went to the supreme court to be able to give benefits to same-sex couples (non-married) working for the state government and the supreme court just made same-sex marriages legal altogether.

I understand what you are saying. I do hope that the government will not try and change that.

If you thought otherwise then you truely dont understand separation of church and state.

Its not surprising considering that Christanity in America likes to step over that wall. So they expect the government to do so as well.

It's a sign!!!

My big brother just came out on Facebook, and it was due to this decision.

I am tearing up just because I am so happy that he doesn't feel the need to hide it anymore. I had no idea.
Incredible. I'm so happy for his bravery in coming out and how happy and excited he must be. Love him, love this day, love life. :)

Gay marriage has come to America thanks to Ohio, BTW. Today's decision came on a case brought by an Ohioan, James Obergefell. The case's name is "OBERGEFELL, ET AL. v. HODGES, DIRECTOR, OHIO DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH, ET AL."

The people against gay marriage who brought the state constitutional amendment to Ohio voters in 2004 that banned gay marriage actually caused the eventual legalization of gay marriage for the entire nation. Irony!

Frankly, I'm disappointed in..... how terrible that case name will be to repeat.

I'm sure it'll be abbreviated to Obergefell v. Hodges, but yeah, it's still a bit of a mouthful, heh.

Nope. Just don't fell like arguing with people who have already made their minds up.

To be fair, I have already made my mind up. Oversimplifying my thought processes heavily, it does fundamentally boil down to:

Not allowing same sex marriage is nasty.
Allowing same sex marriage is nice.

Considerations beyond that have to contend with those two rather important statements, and I've not heard a compelling argument to trump them.

Not sure why more people aren't talking about this line from Thomas' dissent:

"The corollary of that principle is that human dignity cannot be taken away by the government. Slaves did not lose their dignity (any more than they lost their humanity) because the government allowed them to be enslaved. Those held in internment camps did not lose their dignity because the government confined them. And those denied governmental benefits certainly do not lose their dignity because the government denies them those benefits. The government cannot bestow dignity, and it cannot take it away."

I read a lot of dumb shit back in law school but this takes the cake... this is so frightening Thomas should be removed from the Court by any means necessary.

If you live in a state where the election has any chance of being close vote for Hillary purely for the Supreme Court. Otherwise feel free to protest vote. Those numbers will show up.

Presidential elections do matter.

This can't be stated enough. I honestly feel that SC appointees are much more important than the executive or legislative branches. The implications of SC rulings are astronomical.

The way I see it is that anyone voting conservative is voting in another Scalia. I can't respect or support that.

Edit:

I haven't read the dissents yet, but reading that excerpt... is mind boggling! WTF...

Clarence Thomas: Same-sex marriage bans, like slavery, were just fine for human dignity

look at the bright side, bigots, re-electing obama already gave you 1000 years of darkness so this literally doesn't change anything

Nah. It won't happen. It's bluster to start off after the announcement. Cities and towns will begin issuing them and then they'll get held up if they decisions get taken to court.

Some conservatives have advocated for a civil disobedience effort against a Supreme Court decision in favor of same-sex marriage. However, officials in red states told The Huffington Post recently that they are prepared to implement the decision, going so far as to ready gender-neutral marriage licenses and set later office hours. Gerard Rickhoff, who oversees marriage licenses in Bexar County, Texas, said that if same-sex couples are discriminated against elsewhere in the state, "Just get in your car and come on down the highway. You'll be embraced here."

Oh cool. I lived in San Antonio for a couple years, this isn't a surprise but still nice to see.

Hannity's Facebook page comments are really something. Biblical meltdowns. Delicious.

Rick Gatlin: Now I can marry my male dog

Gary Smith: We are living in the Last Days and the Lord will have the Last Word, and HE Will overrule The Supreme Court!!!!!

Tom Holley: The Supreme Court just doomed this country

Rose Tyrone: God destroyed two cities for less than what is happening in the U S right now

Jay Culotta: BREAKING NEWS - The U.S.A. has been renamed to SODOM!

Christian, here. Putting an advance apology for the Christians that abandon love and acceptance that's literally the core of the religion.

I'm always scared for the future of Christianity when posts like that Twitter one pop up.
I appreciate that you are intelligent and mature enough to make a logical distinction between ambiguous translations in the English Bible and the common sense of modern day, like so many aren't. Thank you. :)

Well, we had to be dragged into this kicking and screaming because the state government was fighting it, but yay for my friends here in Ohio. Very happy :D

I feel like he forgot to edit: "but at the same time it probably would have been better if the government had not enforced those things to begin with. Nvm... ignore this dissent."

So he's saying he would have voted against federal racial equality, as he did today against marriage equality, if he were on the bench at the time? Even though he is an African American?

WTF?

He wouldn't even have been ALLOWED to be on the bench if the government didn't BESTOW dignity upon himself.
