SCOTUS strikes down gay marriage bans, legalizing marriage equality nationwide

Well, the argument that men and women are complimentary isn't just restricted to their ability to have children together. The argument is that men and women can experience a special kind of physical and emotional intimacy together that people of the same sex cannot experience because of the way the different innate strengths and weaknesses and the different physical makeup of the two genders are designed to work together to create something greater than each individual part. That happens whether or not the couple end up having children.

I actually do agree that civil marriage should be considered as distinct from religious marriage, as the two sides of society are no longer linked in the way they used to be. What the government says and what God says are two different things. Unless you live in a government run by God, which certainly is true of no government on earth. So religious arguments are not going to have persuasive merit when determining governmental policy.

I haven't seen a good argument that believing in evolution necessarily precludes believing in a Creator.

Whether you define marriage as between a man and a woman or marriage as between any two consenting adults or marriage as anything else, arguing about it is always going to come down to an argument about definition. I don't think there's any way to avoid that. There's not really a way to define marriage in a way that's completely agnostic as to its makeup and then argue from there as to what marriage is. So yes, the question ultimately comes down to who defines marriage and what they define it as.

Have you had anal sex with another man? If not how can you say anything about the level of physical and emotional intimacy they can obtain?

They cater exclusively to the farthest right of the right wing because that's the ratings base they have.

It's sad. But MSNBC is no better on the opposite end of the spectrum.

It's important to remember that these people are ALSO a minority.

The black church preaches homophobia and of all of the things we (black people) pick and choose to be Christians on, hostility and contempt for the LGBT community ranks consistently high. It's fucking brainwashing and it's bullshit. I had to check my own mom on this topic in the past. I'm from Detroit though in Indiana and I'm a deist. The fact that were are all a minority in some regard doesn't register nor does it matter, a book says it's bad, that's it.

Q though, was this expected news today -- or could this news have been next week. Wasn't following the other thread.

I posted an article earlier in the thread that stated many local counties were preparing for the possibility ahead of time. normally in Texas you wait 72 hours for a license, but exceptions are being made for today's ruling.

So next up: Get rid of guns and then legalize weed?

Most GOP politicianscare probably doing a happy dance. If they can survive the 2016 race they wont have to campaign on it again. In 2016 they have to appease the biggoted base electorate and then moderate in the general.

So I saw that Jeb and Graham shot down any attempt at a constitutional amendment.

But Huckabee, Santorum, Jindal and Walker are pushing that the amendment must happen now.

Any news on the other billion candidates?

Good point from a fellow Gatorlander.

Her truly sad tone disarmed me. The religious south is confusing. Up north they would be openly assholish. Down here it's like "let's layer ten levels of kindness over this bigotry so we can feel righteous" and it always disarms me. Like "how can you hate so genuinely kindly?" I had someone once tell me they believed our earth is meant to be used up and destroyed so that the sinners can wallow in the Raptured's filth and they said it so sweetly that you would think they were giving a toast at their best friend's wedding.

Funny you say that because it's exactly what I remember experiencing at UF. Previous to having landed in Gainesville, I was in Mill Valley, CA (literally the second town you hit across the Golden Gate from SF), and Potomac, MD; both overwhelmingly liberal areas. Now, I wasn't too politically inclined in college - I just didn't give a shit - but I knew my stance on social issues, so I was surprised to find that I got along with so many kids at UF who came from conservative backgrounds. I was like, "It's true what they say, I guess; Southerners really are nicer than northerners", though, for me that was not necessarily a huge accomplishment because I always considered people from the DC area to be dicks compared to the SF Bay Area.

Anyway, as we all got older and the discussions about society and its welfare became more frequent and more substantive, that's when the layers of politeness would unravel and I finally got to hear what some of those people thought about things like gay rights. Some of it was straight up disturbing. Yet, when you're not discussing those things, you'd think the guy who would later talk about systematically castrating gays was the nicest kid ever.

dont you stifle them!

Nobody explains what the hell it is. People keep asking, and nobody explains. So what am I even stifling here?
Im talking about the gif itself. All I see its a character named Penny. People keep using it and get politely asked what the hell it means and get ignored. Research tells me nothing about this gif or what it means.

Is it weird that while I think this is of course awesome at the same time I can't help but overall feel sad that it took this long or we're celebrating something that makes so little sense to have banned before. I just feel super disconnected with the people against this and seems like such an obvious thing

then again im not in the US

congratulations on finally making this happen, hope we'll eventually feel like we're not in the 60s with these regards

you know everything you need to know

on neo gaf dot com, it means genderless dystopia

That's a stance for a candidate throwing a hail mary to win a few States in the Republican primary but someone who knows they have 0% chance of winning the National Presidential election.

1) get over it don't go policing joy it's a bad look
2) I've got some great news for you! You won't ever have to see it again!

I dont mind seeing it I just want to know wtf it means
Itsl ike if I were to post some unexplained gif everywhere and not explain it to anyone.

i regret nothing.

Its just been the theme of these threads for .. year...s..? Christ how long have I been on gaf. Its an image from a show.. i can't remember the name of right now... just a gal dancing thats been related by a member that would post/update LGBT progress whenever another shield fell. It always sparks controversy, people love it, or hate it. Its a harmless gaf-meme. Its a way to express happiness on a specific issue here.

Ps,

I think we know what camp you're in! I hated it at first too, but let it wash over you. Don't be scared.

The argument would be that a different kind of intimacy exists regardless of people's personal feelings on the matter, that there is an innate specialness to different-sex relationships that happens regardless of people's personal feelings on the subject.

If you could point to something evident and say "there it is, the innate specialness happening", then that argument might be worth something.

Whether one agrees with homosexuality or not, there never should've ban on gay marriage in the first place. One should marry whoever he/she wants to marry.

I don't see how it's sexist. Saying men and women are different from each other isn't saying that one or the other is a second-class citizen. Difference does not imply inferiority.
Because some women are stronger physically and emotionally than men? Not all men and women fit the stereotypes you have brought forth. I've been lurking this entire time, but this is getting ridiculous. I do not fit the stereotype of men you have brought forth and I have traits in both and none. Marriage existed before religion and its definition has changed as a result of definitions changing over time for everything. You say who should define marriage? Easy, same sex marriage is now accepted by the majority of the USA, that is who should define marriage. Legal marriage is a right that every person should be offered to every person who wants those rights. Equality cannot be denied to anyone.

I saw that Rubio shot it down too.

So of the "front runners" you have Jeb and Rubio against it and Walker pushing for the amendment.

Basically furthers my belief Walker won't live up to the hype at all once he actually declares.

Penny is from Happy Endings.

Happy Endings is a great show.

Gays love Happy Endings.

Gays especially love Penny.

Thus, she is a natural dancer for the gay rights movement.

scared of what? Have you even been paying attention to my posts, or my twitter?
I was just getting fed up with people asking what a simple gif means and nobody telling them.
Im 100% FOR gay marriage. This is a happy day and I have been spreading rainbow picturees fuckin everywhere.

there is only one solution here.

"My eros is special/magical/holy, your eros is crude/corrupt/deficient."

I don't think this alchemy you're talking about is as simple as getting a man and woman together, but I guess it would be a lot easier or more convenient if it was. To go with your metaphor, spiritual alchemy is always a balancing act using the materials and forces that you have naturally at your disposal. It's not trying to shove a round peg in a square hole (denial of one's nature), nor is it unthinking hedonism leading to a state of degeneration, it's stopping the swing of the pendulum altogether. What you're describing is a high level of intimacy that leads to growth or dissolving superficial boundaries, as opposed to the production stagnation which may result from too much "sameness", straight people don't have the monopoly on that nor does their biology magically avail them to it.

THANK YOU.
also the gif itself isnt actually bothering me, post it whenever you want to. I just hate being out of the loop on things.

I think it was possible at one time to argue that "marriage" is a unique thing, a definition for a relationship that happens between a man and a woman. I don't necessarily agree, but it was possible.

But once marriage was tied up with tax benefits, health benefits, inheritance, property ownership, and all sorts of other privileges that argument goes right out the window. You either have to give the "partnership" arrangement all the same rights as marriage, or (much easier) just extend marriage to all.

Funny thing is I think the actress has tweeted that she is aware of this gif being associated with gay marriage equality and she loves it. I know everyone says if the person is aware of their meme it is time to move on, but I find it more endearing that she approves of it.

I'm talking out of my ass on this but my gut feeling is that a lot of it was due to the religious right suddenly trying to nuke even the chance of getting civil unions for gay couples. As you see the big wins starting piling in after they got "fuck you, can't have anything" laws passed in a bunch of states. This fired up the gay rights movement and informed straight people that it was something being actively attacked.

Sometimes I honestly think if the conservatives hadn't try to play for all or nothing, we would be sitting at civil unions right now instead of full on marriage, because people would have gone "well, you at least have all the legal rights, right? you're fine now". Sort of how the ERA was undone.

tl;dr Church went for broke and busted

I think it's really just down to the way sexual orientation works. Unlike with race there's very little segregation - gay people are mixed in with straight people and it's very hard to sustain a good othering when you know gay people personally and they're exactly like you. Unlike with abortion which women can easily hide and have no reason to publicize, a little acceptance of gay people snowballs because it leads to more gay people publicizing their orientation - being able to be openly gay is a big part of what the gay rights movement has been about. And there are actually a lot of them, so pretty soon everybody knows gay people. Unlike with many other civil rights issues there's no sense that gay marriage rights are a zero-sum game - it just doesn't hurt any straight people that gay people can get married and doesn't really affect them at all unless they have close relations who are gay, in which case they have a reason to be for gay marriage. There aren't even the concerns that there have been about inter-racial marriage, since gay people are only marrying gay people.

So you have more and more openly gay people popping up in the midst of straight society, presenting as exactly the same as similarly-situated straight people except for some stuff that has nothing to do with anybody else, and asking for considerations that are completely irrelevant to the lives of straight people except to the extent that they have gay relations or friends.

It's kind of a best-case scenario for going from "this is an abomination!" to "wait why did anyone care about this?", more-or-less independent of actual tactics. Note that stuff like ENDA is a lot harder to get done.

Scared to embrace the Penny!

Seriously, i think thats the extent of the gif. There isn't any real other meat to it, off the top of my head. I don't believe in twitter. I'm just having a laugh mate.

edit:

Q though, was this expected news today -- or could this news have been next week. Wasn't following the other thread.

It wasn't guaranteed but it was a smart bet by the judge. If it hadn't happened, it would have just been a regular vacation day for her. But we know she knew at least one gay couple who wanted to get married through her church.

Pretty crazy if true. Didn't the meme start on GAF? Has it spread that far throughout the internet?

yes, I'm aware of the Stonewall riots

shame it couldn't align more perfectly, but for whatever reason the SCOTUS seems to have picked June 26th

The Court's summer recess begins at the end of June, so it tends to issue a ton of opinions around that time. Particularly those of a more complicated and/or controversial nature that may have taken longer to decide.

Its fine now. I just wanted to know the origins of it and why its always used. But it makes sense now. Im sorry if I was a disruption about this.

In any case I really am enjoying this because I love colors and the more colorful everything is the better. Spread rainbows across the fuckin world please.

I'm pretty sure they vote within a week or so of oral arguments, it just sometimes takes longer to actually write the opinions on more complicated and controversial stuff.

Because he has a different opinion than others he gets banned? Ok. I happen to agree with him. I've seen more hate in the thread towards Christians and religious people than I have against gays. So should everyone be banned?

You can't be serious. :-/
Do you actually think your country is going to shit for allowing people who happen to love others of the same sex to have the same basic human rights as everyone else?
If so, then I won't cry if I see your name in grey in the near future either, just like the asshat you seem to agree with.

Anyway. It's actually one of the few things for which I'm proud about my country when I see they were the second country in the world to adopt this nation wide.
Lots of things really such here, but at least the higher ups got this one right.
