Xbox One adds Xbox 360 backwards compatibility

Yep. You can also get thief right now (not sure if this will be BC though since there's a next gen version, but it's worth a try). www.xbox.com search for the games and you should be able to purchase them.

Mugatu should really add this stuff to the main post

When Gears 3 becomes available, go to the Xbox website and "buy" the game there. It'll be added to your 360 library regardless if you have a 360. You'll obviously need to have an active XBL Gold subscription before you do this though.

Nice, sounds good thanks.

Has anyone tried playing digital 360 games on XB1 without internet connection / being signed in to live? I wonder how the licensing works, on 360 the games are tied to the console & anyone can play them offline / with different accounts. I guess on XB1 you have to be signed in with your profile, similar to when you want to play your games on another 360, but I haven't checked that yet..

Yeah you can play digital 360 games on the xbox one offline with no problem.

Indeed, just tried it myself - could play Geometry Wars offline, even without being signed in with my account.

That's quite surprising, does that mean the license is transferred to the console? Perhaps it actually works like the original DRM plan for XB1, and you have to connect to live at least once a day? Or perhaps the behaviour changes once BC is released officially?

So many questions ;)

It follows current xbox one drm rules (home console etc)

So that means the license is effectively duplicated, correct? Guess it's limited to one XB1 & one 360 in order to prevent abuse..

Basically it treats them like an Xbox one game for DRM purposes.
Don't get hung up on how 360 licenses used to work.

So gamesharing etc all work for them, jusst like for XB1 games.

Yeah that makes sense. But you can't completely ignore how 360 licenses work since that's where the purchase happened, and I assume you can still play the games on your 360 offline. That didn't work when using a different 360 (without completely moving the licenses over).

Basically, that means you can sell your old 360 with fully working digital games on it while still having full access to them on your XB1 (assuming they won't remove the licenses from the 360 the next time it goes online without your account on it).

Edit: to put it another way, a (somewhat shady) shop could sell duplicated games: they make a dummy account, set a 360 & an XB1 to its home console, buy some games for it and then sell the consoles separately. They would only have to buy the game once & could sell it twice. A bit convoluted & there are limitations for the buyer (can't play the games on another console, even online), but nonetheless they could make some money with it.

Honestly I doubt they care. How many people are actually going to do that?

I turned off grain and blur and it still plays way too terrible for me. I'm back to playing it on my 360 for now. =\

I thought that people were crazy for saying that the performance was bad in spots. Then I started fighting rachni and it turned into a slideshow. Hopefully this is a kink that Mocrosoft can work out.

Good point, plus 360 software sales can't be that high anymore..

I don't know. There is definitely a used market. Here's an ebay snapshot for just xbox 360 games. And some of those are sealed games too.

I'm wondering if this makes issues that were present but less common in the original version more likely. On the 360, my first playthrough encountering Liara in the mine, the game ran at roughly three frames per second through the whole end of the encounter (not exaggerating), but when I went back in later playthroughs, it ran fine. That sounds almost like what people are encountering in some scenes playing it on the XB1.

I'm in the dash preview, and all the games I've played have run nicely, but I haven't checked out Mass Effect, which is the one people noticed differences with early on.

I heard Phil Spencer mention in an interview that one of the hurdles they have get over is multi-disc games. That would mean that Forza 3/4 and Mass Effect 2/3 would have issues. I really do hope they resolve this.

Sales of used games aren't netting MS / the publishers any money anyway (apart from potential dlc sales), and disc games are not affected by the transfer of the license. So the question would rather be how many digital copies of 360 games are sold nowadays (can't be that much since afaik NPD software sales are down for quite some time now, and it's safe to assume next gen is taking more and more of the cake). And it's almost guaranteed 360 digital sales will go up once BC is officially released. Guess it's a win/win in any case..

I just tried out Geometry Wars. My first Xbox360 game and my first BC game to try on the Xbox One. I'm sure there's tons of videos out there but I uploaded a video on how BC games start up and look.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVHxzub5hyk

Also, I forgot how insane Geo Wars can get. On my first try I died really quick. My second try I was able to reach a score of 1 million which is pretty good IMO.

looking good. was there any input lag?

I think what they got is an xbox 360 os made for an x1 that runs as an app.

Well I read that somewhere could be wrong.

It runs it as a game, which is why you can take screenshots and stream games, you can't do that with an app.

The games think they're running on an Xbox 360, it has no idea its on an Xbox One, and even the Xbox One doesn't realise its an Xbox 360 game (because of how you can run system features like parties in tandem on both)

Also why it works without input lag... its just a game and has regular input.

Although this has been discussed before and I think he was joking anyway

Got in the preview program... downloaded Geometry Wars and Zuma, which I got to play where I left off in the x360... Mass Effect, though is tough...its downloading still...I guess all 7+ gb eh... Anyway, of the two I got to play... good job, plays really smoothly...save for one bit of hiccup in Geometry Wars when I think a change in tempo happened... but the game didn't die or crash.. just a small hiccup

I'm sure this has been brought up in the 100+ pages of the thread, but, has it been explained why MS haven't really put any of their AAA exclusives on this program so far? I mean, yeah, there are some, obviously, but, no Forza games?

It's in beta preview. They're still tweaking the emulator.

I would really like arkham origins .. Missed out on that one.

Well, since they announced BC I'm looking for cheap used copies of all those X360 games I missed. It's true that we still don't have a confirmation on how many games will be BC. Would be great if after it launches we could get a monthtly statement of the games that are being/will be added, not just a "100's of titles".

That way you can look foward to new games on both fronts, Xbox One Games and BC Xbox 360 games.

My kids have been playing Battleblock Theatre and they love it. It's really twitchy for them and I can't say that I have seen any lag or glitch.

I can also confirm that it allows other profiles (ie my kid's) logged into the XBO to access the digital 360 games all on their own it seems. My kid had saved his progress on his profile and when I logged him in to play again later on (age restrictions) he said he has lost his progress. I logged me out and him back in again and his progress was there. Seems neat. Will try with other titles as and when.

I wonder how Microsoft will handle regionalized versions of games.

For example - what happens, if Mass Effect 2 dubbed in Polish is inserted into XBO. Will it work? Will it download English version? Will it download Polish version?

And what happens, if ME2 in English version will be entered into XBO in Poland - will it work or be blocked? After ME2 fiasco (DLC incompatibility) EA/MS still haven't released some DLCs for ME2 on Polish XBL even though they sold both versions (CE was In English, Regular in Polish).

I have doubts that it will work here.

Shit, I would pay any money for all those DLCs to b released on Polish XBL, not only for ME2, but also for other games publishers forgot.

All first party games will be backwards compatible. Multi disc games like Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon are being worked on as well.

Finally found my Mass Effect disk and popped it in last night, installed like a charm.

Went to play it.. WOW. I haven't played it since sometime in 2007.. it holds up really well! I played a couple of hours and didn't have any issues. I think the frame rate might have dropped a couple of times, but it wasn't anything super egregious.

But that Mass Effect.. man. I hope they get 2 & 3 working.. I might be doing a full play through soon.

I was definitely someone who thought backwards compatibility was stupid, as I wanted NEW games not OLD games. But.. man, I was super wrong. I am actually excited to be able to go back and play my old games as they get added.

Isn't it great knowing that you can indeed have both?!

Its amazing isn't it?!

Pretty much. I guess in my mindset I didn't want them spending a finite amount of resources towards old stuff when it could be spent on new stuff.. but this seems like the right balance.

We've got our new shizz, realized its cool but its still just prettier versions of stuff we used to play.

There are a ton of 360 games I either didn't get around to playing or didn't finish. Hopefully prices stay low.

The 360 store is going to be my new 'indie price point' impulse buy.

But it's not a zero sum game. It's not like a company looks at thing and says that it can't be done unless another thing is canceled/reduced.

If thing is projected to be profitable, then thing can usually get budgeted, and that's always done outside of looking at other investments.

Is Mass Effect that bad? I don't remember it running particularly swell back in the day.

I tried playing Mass Effect for the first time on 360 about a year ago and stopped playing when I got to the Citadel, solely on how bad the game began performing. Screen tearing was all over the place, and the frame rate dropped to the high teens. It was garbage.

Decided to start picking up some Xbox 360 games in hopes that they get added to the BC list. If they don't, I'll just end up grabbing an actual 360 to play them on, haha

RPG's like crazy. Multi disc are the ones that will be the hardest to use, too. They still don't have a solution yet. But Lost Odyssey is good, as a side note. Hard to find too, and expensive.

I heard directly from Phil Spencer that he wants Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey to be a priority. :)

Did the same and ordered a used copy of UMVC3 from BB. Image my surprise when I received a brand new unopened copy for $12.99 :)
Edit: long shot with that game, I know. But if nothing it's a nominal amount.

Man, I hope Capcom, Namco, Sega, and Treasure get behind BC. I have so many great games trapped on last gen consoles, especially fighters and older arcade and console ports.
