What is the current state of Destiny?

MAX PAYMENT

Member
I only played it for a week or so. Got to level 28ish, never tried the raid and put it down.

It's lack of content turned off.

Is there any reason to go back?

I'd be curious to know this too, I left at level 28 or 29 after the gunplay just couldn't make up for the lack of everything else.

Though it's probably not the best metric, Brad (Giant Bomb) makes it sound like the game is still much the same hamster wheel it's been since launch, only with a bit more stuff in it if you pay for the expansions.

I'm in the same boat as you OP. Got to 26. Though I tried the raid and it didn't change my mind on the game even though people said it was entirely an different experience

I have Taken King preordered at the moment and am considering jumping back in

Would just like to know if the grind has been fixed, I just want to play the content without having to spend hours trying to level up to gain access to it (that's what I had to do to reach the first raid after I hit 20, and it burned me out fast)

I don't understand. You hated the lack of content and proceeded to stop before touching the best piece of content.

Hit level 29. Got some great gear but got burned out due to the repetitive grinding. I'll probably play it soon since I haven't tried Dark Below or House of Wolves.

The PvP is amazing. Everyone uses one of two primaries 10% of the time, shotguns 70% of the time, and rocket launchers 20% of the time. And of course the amazingly well-balanced supers are sprinkled throughout the match too.

They couldn't have made a more balanced or fun online shooter if God himself was one of the designers. And don't get me started on the incredible PvE content!

I quit at level 29 after receiving my 100th sniper rifle from the raid. Getting the gear was so so so frustrating. So many times I've almost loaded the game back up and started playing again.

The game plays so good, but yeah, the content was lacking at the start. All my friends that still play, play a lot. They really have dug the expansions released so far. They constantly pester me to return. I'm waiting for a major release before diving back in though. May as well get all the previous content in one go.

I feel you OP. I enjoyed Destiny a lot, but I can't be assed to pay $75 for all the DLC. The expansion pass is still $35. Put down the game at level 26.

I'm grateful the Legendary edition exists as a physical disc. I plan on selling my base game for like $10, waiting until the LE drops to $40 (physical woot), then picking it back up. By that time I should be able to get all the DLC for about $30-35 with GCU. It's a game I really want to pick up, it's only a shame I have to jump through all these hoops to avoid getting price gouged by Bungie.

I hit level 32, annoyed I can't do raids because I don't have enough friends that play the game, and at this point its just grinding the same content over and over to level stuff up. Core loop is fun but really needs more content, and honestly better produced content. Game gets overly defended a lot because of the excellent core gameplay loop though.

Totally not worth playing solo, probably not even worth it unless you have two other friends that play.

I ignored doing the raids for the longest time because I simply didn't know enough people and was intimidated about how long they took. I ended up using matchmaking sites like destinylfg.com and I was pretty surprised how easy it was to quickly join groups. The raids ended up being one of the coolest aspects of Destiny and I would strongly recommend trying the Vault of Glass out at least once. Depending on the skill level/knowledge of your group, you just have to make sure you can dedicate a few hours to finish it and that everyone uses a headset.

I see what you did there.

Anyway, I finally burned out from playing it nearly daily for 6 months, but I still play it a few times a week. It's still really fun, and it's still really frustrating. It's a lot more friendly than it used to be, though, and it's a lot easier to get to max level.

Is in a pretty good state yet you have to pay the DLC to see it.

Base game is still lacking since some events can gives you DLC items being blocked untill you buy the DLC like the Queens items to be tied to HOTW DLC.

I hit level 25 before the first DLC, never did a raid, and didn't play until a few weeks ago. Had an itch to play and decided to jump in and just buy the DLC to give me stuff to do.

I'm completely hooked. GAF is really active, got a full raid to crew together and did both of them. It was insanely good. Just having fun doing different stuff and trying to level up. So glad I jumped back in. It's been a lot of fun.

Leveling is easier. Lots more content with the DLC. PvP is kinda of a mess atm and badly needs a patch.

Lots of new content? Where.

It's the same game, if you didn't like it then you won't like it now it's still shallow. That being said I caved and am playing it again after dropping it for the same reason op, was itching for a shooter.

Destiny is good and getting better. Game has changed for the better a great deal since launch.

Very polarizing game. Lots of people love to hate on it. A lot of people also love it. Most OTs (25) on GAF has to say something.

28 in a week. Hoooooow? I've played it off and on since launch. Maybe took a 2 or 3 month break in between and I'm only a 28.

I'm in the same boat. I did almost everything solo but really wanted to try a raid. You should gather people from destiny GAF. They are usually more than willing, especially after the weekly reset. I got a group together within 10 minutes

I can't stop playing it. :/

Gameplay is too good. DGAF Community is the best online community i've ever been a part of.

Edit: If you don't wanna come back you should at least do Vault of Glass since you are already 28. You owe that to yourself. Best FPS "quest/mission/adventure" I've ever played.

The game is still very repetitive. Things have certainly changed since you left but I'd wait until The Taken King launches before you jump back in. Mainly to see if it's a better expirience by then.

I like to think this sums up the community:

You'd like to think wrong and the community is outraged by that. Legit people who are trying to help others are getting their codes stolen.

Let's not make this a shit-on-Destiny thread.

Anyways OP, the game is in a pretty good state. PVP is the hot topic at the moment on rebalancing and what not but I'm sure some changes will come soon.

The PVE content is almost endless and with the newest expansion (House of Wolves) leveling is easier than ever. End-game gear is also very easy to upgrade and end game content is overwhelming.

DestinyGAF is a great community who are always around to help out so go pop in the thread with any other questions you might have. Hope to see ya there ;)

it only has the many posts because many of us use it as a way to group up with people.

Grind to get gear to make grinding for gear leveling easier.

End game content is fun, especially with a group.

PvP is straight garbage.

base game is the same, with some aberation gone. First expansion sucks ass but the raid is still nice because the end game activity of the second extension don't hold up as much as a raid. Still a huge gap between the end of the vanilla story and the start of the first expansion. That's the true missing gap.

And those people have valid reasons to do so. So what's the problem?

Having just jumped back in with House of Wolves, I've been enjoying it. PvP is fun, both casual crucible, and stuff like Iron Banner and Trials. PvE isn't bad, but a lot of people just want to do cheesy strats that work if you have specific weapons that I don't have. It's still not hard to find GAF groups to run with though.

Great game but bungie is not focusing as much as they should on pvp, auto rifles were murdered with patches, no response from them about the new numbers that have hand cannons having as much kills in 2 weeks than auto rifles ever had (or pulse rifles don't remember too much lol), people like to shit on it because of its story but the people who still play it don't play it for the story missions lol

I'll tell ya my honest opinion. I got the game Day 1. Didn't love it but I liked it. Didn't understand a lot of the things outside of the basics and I stopped for a whiiiiile. Just recently started playing again and I can tell you that it is glorious. I love it and I'm addicted to it. The true Destiny experience starts after level 20 and its beautiful. Everybody shits on how terrible the voyage is getting there and in some ways I completely agree. Wait for The Taken King and buy Destiny then with all of the DLC because I simply can't see how one is still playing it without a DLC and its the best value.

Destiny is a fantastic experience if you have the patience. It's odd what I compare it to but its much like Inglorious Basterds (movie). There is so much buildup that is slow (though IB's is at least interesting) but then the last segment and everything after that is so much fun making everything you just succumbed to watching or doing that much more impactful. The feel when you get your first exotic is a great feeling because you know you've earned it. That's what this game is, working and ultimately a fantastic payoff. The GAF community is fucking brilliant making for an even greater experience.

Hope this helps! :D

Locking the new gear behind multiplayer/Trials Of Osiris has caused the hardcore Raid crew to infiltrate the multiplayer (specifically Skirmish)

It's good that the multiplayer is now being enjoyed by that audience but I enjoy the Crucible when it's just a fun shooter. The hardcore practicing for Trials crew isn't very fun to play against imo.

Thorn is a bummer and I wish it wasn't available in PvP.

Seems like I run into people lag switching more often than ever....lame

Had a pretty lame thing happen in a skirmish match a few days ago. Took us a while to realize that two of the guys were literally not doing anything, besides trying to lead us to the one guy on their team who would shoot us. Like he was trying to make a "pwning noobs" video or something. Not a great feeling lol

EDIT: Still fun if you accept the game for what it is, not for what it isn't

Still a good game. Whatever else people say about it, there isn't a better FPS right now in my opinion. The gunplay is awesome.

I get the criticism, but it has improved a lot since launch.

Destiny is some of the most fun I have ever had with my friends in a video game the community is amazing and Destiny GAF is some of the most fun you can have with your clothes on.

This guys post sums it all up pretty much.

Satisfying pew pew-ness.

Lots of content now compared to launch.

PvP needs balanced (Shotguns need nerfed. Thorn needs a major buff.)

Suspect pricing decisions for UK.

Waste of time playing if you don't have a group of friends/GAFfers to play with.

Do you want to be SEXY?

Everyone wants to be SEXY. Everyone should do anyway :P

It was fun for the first month. If they made Destiny 2 and added a trading system and more variety in missions where I don't have to walk through the same sections and waves of enemies over and over, then I'd consider. PvP sucked ass, though. Trading kills should NOT be a thing, and the supers were annoying enough because you couldn't counter them.

Edit: Oops, you're talking about the current state. I don't know but I know the fans of the game seem to be frustrated by Bungie I think.

It really depends on if you own the dlc if not than I would look at getting the taken king with all the earlier dlc.
I've always felt destiny is worth playing even with the lack of content.

I wonder how many of the haters are long time bungie/Halo fans. As someone who's followed Bungie since Oni, I absolutely hate what the studio has become. I wish their next DLC and game would bomb so they learn to provide enough content to be worth the asking price. Unfortunately I don't see that happening =(
