SHENMUE 3 kickstarter (PC/PS4) - FINAL DAY - NEW KS RECORD GO GO GO!

Is there a thread where backers can discuss things that concern them regarding the upcoming game and Kickstarter without being part of a global conspiracy to destroy Yu Suzuki?

Well, I hope no hardcore-fan miss out the phone card. While that is more of a fun treat for fans I think the technique scrolls are more important for people that enjoy to 100% or, like me, really loved to collect and master all moves in the earlier games. $800 is just not gonna happen for me.

Same here, I just enjoy aiming for 100% on my games so I'm a bit pissed at the 800$ technique scroll

The thing is, Shenmue isn't the kind of game you can 100%, ya know?
Like the old games, you can't '100%' the notebook, because choosing certain game paths automatically mean you forfeit others.

I think the phone card is a great addition personally. Obviously going to call Nozomi first, isn't she in Canada though? Could be an interesting little conversation.

I just played the old games multiple times. You could also 100% them in the sense that you never had to choose between any moves if I remember correctly? Also I think some of you are a bit overly cautious, criticism does not equal hate. I will still pledge at least $340.

Never saw it, but I don't care much about it since it isn't story content.
one phone conversation is hardly story content, come off it.

well the problem here is that the hyperbole about "50 DOLLAR DEE EL CEE" has spiralled this thread into a place where that dumb shit needs to be shut down immediately before some goof who didn't read the thread thinks it is the truth

and here's a little perspective

it's a phone conversation. probably two minutes in length. if that.

shenmue 3 is happening, and we're discussing a perfectly legitimate way to encourage fans to pledge a little higher, and you're concerned about two minutes you can look up on youtube about six hours after the game launches.

O_o

Weird. I don't get that on my laptop but I do on my desktop. When I open it on my laptop nothing happens, the gif just plays.

This scene melts me. Absolutely melts me. One of my favourite songs too.

It's true. I felt like "the man" after I kicked everyone's butt in expert fashion and saved Nozomi. I really felt like I was Ryo at that moment. Heh, living the little boy's dream of saving the girl and acting cool while she melts in your arms. Sounds silly but it was damn nice in the game.

The whole motorcycle segment was awesome. Loved the little time attack race to get to the warehouse.

In-game items you mean ? Those are a bit different (in my mind at least)

Isn't the phone card an in-game item?

I wish they released add-on items today so we could add more copies and items to our pledge. How would people feel about the phone card item being an add-on for $20?

one phone conversation is hardly story content, come off it.

Looks like more than one phone conversation. It's an item used to call multiple characters from the previous games. Cool item but I wish I didn't have to shell out another $51 for it. Maybe if it were a $35 or $40 stretch goal I wouldn't be so bothered.

you don't have to shell out anything. if you want those conversations, up your pledge. that's what it is there for. it's incentive. they're not rubbing their hands thinking of the profit they can make, they're trying to increase the funding of the game. the fans get a little extra treat, but they also get to fund the game a little more. they get an item, and a better funded game because they upped their pledge. don't act like the backers are hard done by with this, they're not.

people have been asking for more affordable new tiers, and there you go. there's one, and it's a nice treat for hardcore fans who've been playing the series for years. it's not the end of the world and i wish people would please get some perspective on this.

I dislike the phone call reward. Each person who buys this game should have the same experience.

Then everyone would get a worse game. Lots of people are pledging more than $80 for backer only stuff, but there is no aspect of gameplay or the Shenmue 3 story compromised as far as I can tell. $80 gets some Shenmue 1&2 flashbacks, probably scenes cut directly from those games, and phone messages from characters not otherwise involved .

Game doesn't exist yet. The more funding the better.

Who said it was the end of the world?

This is exactly what I am talking about. I have multiple friends here who are backers who stay out of this thread because it is so hostile towards any opinion that isn't "this new thing is awesome!"

If you want the content, you do have to pay the additional $51. Before this I was thinking of upping my pledge, but now I won't unless they offer a cheaper digital version of this stretch goal. I considered dropping my pledge altogether because of how poorly the kickstarter has been planned, but I love Shenmue too much.

If you care enough about Shenmue happening to get bothered that you can't call Nozomi, you really shouldn't only be pledging $29 in the first place. I understand that not everyone has a lot of money to throw at this project but rewards like this are meant to convince people who care about the game getting made to give a little money. You aren't buying content, you are helping to fund YsNet as a company for the next two years. Things like this are just a thank you for the support.

This can be said about any Kickstarter, not just Shenmue 3.

after 14 years of waiting, is this really what's going to turn you away? really?

Sweet another thing to hate this campaign on, can't wait for the polygon article!

Come on guys, it's a few minutes of convos you can YouTube easily, hardly anything substantial that you'll be missing out on. Think of it as DLC all you want but if it makes some fans pledge more, giving us all a better game at the end of the day, I can live with that.

Don't get me wrong, the Kickstarter was definitely questionable in the early stages, but they've been making up for that and more in recent updates. $80 for an exclusive PS4 copy and a nice little extra by calling previous Shenmue characters, as well as helping fund the game development is awesome as a Shenmue fan who has been waiting 14 years in my opinion.

the ones screaming on the previous page acting like a whole chapter was cut from the game.

"Not impressed"

"I can see how others would be annoyed"

"Really upset"

"I can't appreciate that"

"I dislike"

This does not strike me as screaming about the end of the world.

I can see how people are conflicted about exclusive content like that. I am a bit myself. But I didn't use the phone in Shenmue 1 anyway (mainly because dialing was a pain).

We have to ask ourselves what is more essential: getting some unimportant phone conversations (that we can later watch on youtube anyway), or reaching those stretch goals that unlock more important stuff for everyone.

I'm listening to the FREE music and it seems like there is some missing. I really feel like I remember some tune and I can't find it...

Really upset with that $80 reward. That's like $50 DLC. I'd like to have that in the game but I don't want to part with $80. :(

don't be selective with your quotes. the above quote is probably the most hyperbolic thing i've heard in years.

To be honest, I'm on this line of thinking too. I can see why people are sort of skeptical about the $80 rewards (and I'm quite as well, though I am considering putting down $80 despite not having played Shenmue before), but there's no need to raise up the pitchfork here people. Seriously, calm down, it seems that a negative opinion can be taken as a whole attack on the Kickstarter campaign.

I know the campaign has been unjustly criticized and attacked, but come on, now.

I hated how when I first started playing this game I always input the area code when dialling the phone number. You only need the last six digits! :(

I actually only realized that when I finished my playthrough and looked up the Youtube video of Ryo calling Nozomi to show my girlfriend. I've been playing this game almost once a year since 2000 and never realized that until about a week ago.

This can be said about any Kickstarter, not just Shenmue 3.

So, if I only pledge what they tell me I need to pledge to get a copy of the game then I don't really care about Shenmue? I actually bought Shenmue 1/2 when they came out, if they offer the ability to call her and other characters from the previous games, why would I not want that to be part of it?

Its an extra $51 on a $29 pledge almost tripling my pledge, they set the price for the game and told me what I need to pay to get a copy which I am quite happy with my contribution, I don't really expect them to put something like that behind a high goal as they have done personally.

Although as Bear Cub said, I won't be dropping my pledge.

But Shenmue 3 is relying on Kickstarter pledges to get made. They've got to offer some good lower tier rewards.

You'll be able to listen to these bonus phone conversations on YouTube within two hours of the game officially releasing, so I wouldn't worry about missing out. It's not like it's gameplay content (which, to be fair, could be their next step in KS incentives).

Merely not being thrilled by the extra content not everyone will get means you probably hate Shenmue and may be part of the conspiracy to destroy it.

Don't be surprised if the game is datamined in the far-flung future and this content is all on it, along with the other backer-exclusive content. I don't see how there's any way to keep this stuff from getting into the hands of the general public anyway.

I'm generally against "Kickstarter-exclusive" DLC as a whole. One project I initially backed, The Lost Pisces, had "exclusive" content (different outfits and a vehicle to use) gated off behind an arbitrary $600 tier. It was one of the reasons (but not the only one) why I cancelled my pledge.

This is extra content meant to say thanks to the people who gave them the most support. If Shenmue means so much to you that you'd be upset that you can't call up Fuku or Nozomi -- content that you will definitely be able to get for free from Youtube after the game is released -- you're pledging too low. Kickstarter's are not a store. They're meant to provide the capital that people need to get their project going. By pledging only $29, you are giving the bare minimum support to the project which, in my opinion, only suggests vague interest and support.

The $29 tier is helpful. It's responsible for contributing $706,150 as at this time. If you're happy with the amount you've pledged, that's great. I'm pretty happy that you've pledged as well. But you can't get upset that they're giving more rewards and thank-yous to those of us who pledge more. This is how Kickstarter campaigns work.

Merely not being thrilled by the extra content not everyone will get means you probably hate Shenmue and may be part of the conspiracy to destroy it.

Quit the hyperbole. Nobody is saying anything about a conspiracy. There's just a bunch of overreactions to the project giving additional rewards and thanks to those who back more. This isn't DLC and you aren't buying a game. You are giving YsNet the capital it needs to operate for the next few years. We are just doing so in exchange for trinkets instead of the more traditional share-based investment.

New rewards gu-

Oh god dammit....

New reward funding so far:

Code:
S3 WORLD TELECOM - 180 BACKERS: 14.4K
SHENMUE PATRON - 23 BACKERS: 18.4K

FUNDING TOTAL: 32.8K

The new rewards were posted 1.5 hours ago so that's a 33K boost in a very short amount of time. This is what they need to be doing TBH. Constant updates to keep everyone interested reverting eyes back to the KS. As for the gated off content; it's a small sacrifice for something that will increase funding to YS Net ultimately resulting in a better game. Worth it IMO.

To be fair, $29 is pre-ordering and paying up more than 2 years in advance. More than a vague interest. Vague interest would be waiting to see what the reviews are like.

I can already see the articles:

Polygon: Shenmue III's is emotionally blackmailing fans for $50 on-disc DLC.
Phill Owen: How can I take this Shenmue III kickstarter serious with that hilarious Chinese writing?
Metal gear fans: Did Shenmue III just copy MGS2's 'S3' plan? Is this legal?

this is how kickstarters work, the more you give, the more you get in return if successful, because if a project fails, those that gave more lose more

Does anyone know what they mean by a "signed picture" in the $1500 tier? I assume it is a self-photograph, with a signature? Would rather be clear on it before finalizing though.
