Final Fantasy Tactics fans: Are there any good similar games out there?

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and A2 both were very solid. Especially Advance. I own Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together, Jeanne D'Arc and Disgaea on PSP but I've yet to play them.

Personally, I loved the Disgaea games on PS2.
Picked up the first one on chance back in the days and was pleasantly surprised.

There really is nothing quite like the original Final Fantasy Tactics and it frustrates me to no end, much like there's really nothing quite like so many other well made games. The closest like many others have said would be the psp remake of tactics ogre and the gba tactics ogre.

There's Front Mission 5 (English patch) which is absolutely phenomenal.

Not to mention to fantastic Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together.

I enjoyed The Banner Saga for the same reasons I enjoyed Final Fantasy Tactics. So, there's that.

I agree on Tactics Ogre (both the original and the GBA spinoff Knight of Lodis)

Disgaea (the first one) - it's best appreciated after playing some other older more serious SRPGs. The humor, presentation and crazy gameplay was a breath of fresh air at the time.
Just curious: why the first one? I think it's the best story of the bunch, but it's the less refined from a gameplay point of view... 3 or 4 are better (I prefer 3 because Puppy Paw Stick is really nerfed in 4, and that make post-game really tedious when you farm specialists unless you use the PS3 version duplication glitch).

BTW, I love Disgaea, but it's different from the FFT/TO formula.

I'll throw in another vote for XCOM. Entirely different aesthetic, but it's nice if you want a change from the fantasy theme.

Massive Chalice is pretty great, but I find myself wishing I could hold onto my characters longer. I realize that the aging is a huge part of the game, but I prefer to develop one set of characters and watch them get stronger and stronger as things progress. I'd still highly recommend everyone check it out, it just can't really compete with other SRPG's for me.

I was disappointed in The Banner Saga. I don't have any specific complaints, I just found the whole thing kind of boring.

That's why. It's hard to go back to if you played a later entry first. (I know from experience, played 3 first)

Good SRPGs:
Valkyria Chronicles
Final Fantasy Tactics
Ogre Battle
Devil Survivor
Yggdra Union
XCOM

Bad SRPGs:
Luminous Arc
Disgaea (awful, all of them)
Fire Emblem

There are lots more in the genre, but I can only rank what I have played.

I played Fire Emblem Awakening right after I finished FFT and really enjoyed it. It was a very similar experience for me. I found the link and relationship system in FE:A an interesting layer to consider and plan around.

Ff tactics is great but I was disappointed at the games length.
Eh? It's a pretty meaty game, I can't imagine anyone thinking it's too short. Unless you thought it was too long...?

Shining Force II
I love Shining Force 1-2-3 to death, but I'm not sure they're that comparable to FFT. Still, I guess they are SRPGs and if we can go that broad, then yes, the numbered Shining Force games are all absolutely amazing.

Not really for awhile now

I guess the Fire Emblem games sorta

and just no to those saying jeanne d arc or disgaea. Just flat out hell no that crap.

Oh yeah the Front Mission games

I've played FFT a bunch over the years on PS1, PSP, and now my Android. I was wondering if there were any modern games like it that were any good. Google found Massive Chalice and The Banner Saga. Have any of you played these and are they good? Do you know of others?

Preferrably PC or X360 games. I don't have a new system and I doubt I'll be getting one any time soon.

Do you have any old systems still?

Thanks for the advice everyone. It's easy to see what the favorites are on GAF.

I played FM3 a bit years ago and liked it ok. I think I just preferred the magic fantasy over the mech-warrior style. Maybe time to give it another shot.

Tactics Ogre too.

It really seems like someone should be making a modern SRPG.

I was with you until this part. Fire emblem is amazing

You're nuts :[ Fire Emblem and FFT are the best IMO.

Also, I don't love Disgaea or Luminous Arc (the handful of games I've played from those series), but they're okay. Nothing above okay, but definitely okay. I'm pretty tolerant with this genre, though, since I even like Hoshigami which everyone hates.

...OP! Play Hoshigami Remix on DS.

Also, it's worth pointing out that Gaijinworks (company with ex-Working Designs staff) is currently working on a localization of Summon Night 5 (PSP), the latest game in one of the greatest Strategy/RPG series of all time and the first one that will get an official English localization (the ones that Atlus did were Action/RPG spin-offs). Still time to sign up for a physical copy: http://www.gaijinworks.com/

I haven't played 5 myself, but Summon Night 3 is one of my favorite Strategy/RPGs ever.

My PSP died. So I'd try to emulate before I'd try to replace it probably. I've never tried to emulate PS2 before. I have a decent 64 bit gaming laptop that might be able to pull it off. What PS2 game were you thinking?

There are some Front Misson games on PS2. SRPG, but with giant robots. Made by Square.

I don't recommend Vandal Hearts. Bad experience. The worst part of that game is the AI. It's not designed to win. It's designed to be as dickish as possible. It will always conspire to kill (not target) the easiest member of your team to kill, regardless of the tactical implications for their own team. You can consistently deal with this by playing very safely but that's just boring.

The trials for Vandalier class are okay iirc, but getting the stones is super-FAQ bait, if that bothers you. The class itself is kinda fun though. By far the most OP class in a tactical RPG I've ever played - Nothing comes even close, and that's fun in itself and even more fun after a whole game of playing conservatively.

I actually prefer Final Fantasy Tactics Advance to the original Tactics. It is my favorite strategy RPG and one of my favorite games overall, partially due to nostalgia since I played Tactics Advance first when it first came out. :P

Well, not exactly the same team. FFT was designed by Hiroyuki Ito. Matsuno only did the story part.

Matsuno directed Final Fantasy Tactics which is a huge role that covers more than just story. Ito designed the battle system.

A lot of these recommendations, I agree with. Especially Tactics ogre... just...damn good.

One game I kinda want to recommend is Stella Deus. I don't exactly know what the overall consensus is, but I enjoyed it. I like the AP system and the class upgrade system.

I forgot to mention Fallout 1 and Fallout 2. Pillars of Eternity is tactical, though it is not exactly turn based and is 'time' based with pause.

Same here, I think I played nearly 150 hours back on my GBA.

I know a lot of people didn't like the "Law System", but I liked how it made you rethink your strategies when in battles. Sure there were a few bullshit ones you'd get on rare occasions (like the "don't attack monsters" law when all the enemies are monsters) but I think all you needed was a group of Ninjas that could counter attack which didn't break the Law.

I also liked the oldschool fairy tale story that it had. Very "Labyrinth" or "Neverending Story" which was great.

I tried the DS sequel at some point, but I wasn't able to get into it for some reason. I want to go back to it and give it another chance someday though.

Tactics Ogre was FFT's predecessor, so that's probably your best bet.

Sort of, the PSP/Vita version is a complete rebuild so gets rid of the jarring lag that FFT and OG TO had. It also was rebalanced and had the new fangled idea of levelling classes as opposed to individual units which I first saw in Valkyria chronicles.

Music was rerecorded, new translation, loading times fixed, new personalisation with skills system, removal of enemies scaling to your party members.

The stories a little bit darker and more nuanced as it's about making hard decisions or with the newgame+ world system exploring outcomes in a fantasy world drawing on the then contemporary 90s balkan war.

I much prefer it to FFT due to the story and the then 00s idea of levelling classes. Plus if you get a Vita you can then start spending your life suspending and enjoying the massive time sinks of the Disgaea games.

If you want contemporary SRPGS, Xbox and PC are the wrong systems to have. You need 3DS or VITA/PS3/4. Bravely default, Disgaea ect are not coming to windows/steam/xbox.

I've always personally preferred Tactics Ogre, but that's probably because I played it before FFT was even released.

What? Vandal Hearts is pretty solid. As for the AI thing, that's a bit frustrating but still very common in SRPGs. Fire Emblem does that too, Shining Force 1 and 2 as well.

Oh, if you want another Android game you could try Rime Berta. I haven't played it too much, but what I have tried seems pretty good. It's free to try on the Play store.

If you play Tactics Ogre, either hunt down the PS1 version or play a fan translation of the Super Famicom version. The PSP version is horrible.

Invisible, Inc

Stealth Strategy RPG from Klei on PC.

I doubt it's really been mentioned in this thread as it has no marketing, but an excellent word of mouth so far.

It also literally nothing like FFT beyond being a turn based game.
