SHENMUE 3 kickstarter (PC/PS4) - FINAL DAY - NEW KS RECORD GO GO GO!

I do but only because I swore off comment section on anything but GAF.

Why? What's up?

They don't seem too bad, but imagine this thread at its craziest, but where rather than discussing things together and responding to each others comments, everybody was just shouting their own comments all at the same time.

To this day that video still amazes me. I remember watching it originally just after finishing Shenmue II for the first time and I was blown away by how good it looked for a Saturn title. Plus like you say the video shows scenes all the way up to the end of Shenmue II so they must have been fairly far along in some aspects to have designed all those separate areas...

I'd give anything to get my hands on that build. We never really had a game that big and open with that amount of detail during the saturn/ps1 era.

I'm not sure that I follow.

Sorry for not being clear enough.

I was just wondering how the average pledges for the low, mid and high-end tiers for the top game KS stack up against each other. For example, percentage wise, how much backers of the total went for pledges up to $29, pledges between $60 and $150, above $1000 and so on.

Yep. The graphics blow me away every time.

also the dude posting "trump2016" over and over

It got quite weird for a while with him spamming the board for ages with #SaveShenmue and #Trump2016 not knowing what hashtags are it seems. His name was Jared but I haven't seen him in a few days now. Maybe banned but who knows; maybe I'm on there at the wrong time. The comments section is largely devoid of any real meaningful discussion anyway.

*4 games, only 2 of which were released, for $47 million

I thought the $47m was for development while the rest was marketing?

Regardless , even on Dreamcast and Xbox there were games that performed better. And I used the word business standpoint from a reason. Suits at Sega wont reason with quality only money talks. And right now the fanbase is doing exactly that via kickstarter.

Yea I can't imagine Shenmue 3 bombing in sales. And I wonder if it's successful enough, will Sega actually decide to fund 4 or is it all in Ys Net hands now?

This appearing on stage at Sony's legendary E3 press conference in conjunction with this month long epic Kickstarter campaign that has resulted in a Shenmue storm in the hearts and minds of gamers everywhere for the entire month and then in tandem with Shenmue's presence at future E3s given prime position on Sony's stage? Then you throw in already secured marketing support from Sony and the PS4's likely ridiculous install base by 2017. This game is destined to be successful and do well. There are so many factors that elevate its potential sales position compared to back when the Dreamcast was out. The Dreamcast is fondly remembered and quite rightly so but its mind share, market performance, install base - everything about it worked against Shenmue at the time. Shenmue 3's going to be released on a super successful console with the platform holder heavily behind it and not on a doomed console like last time.

Shenmue 3 on PS4 in 2017? 500K in sales easily. And that'd just be the first month or so. Everyone is seeing Shenmue's resurgence as a miracle and that's going to carry the game far.

EDIT: To answer the second part of your question Yu Suzuki has already stated that providing Shenmue 3 is sufficiently successful he'd like to work with Sony and produce a Shenmue 4 to conclude the story. Providing Shenmue 3 does well in sales volume Sony would also likely green light a potential Shenmue 4 in a heart beat.

I think a lot of its resurgence has to depend on the originals getting back out there on PSN/digital downloads. I want this for complete redemption to have a fair chance to establish a fanbase on one platform. (PC or PS4)

I kind of wonder if it would be a good idea for them to make a quick video summary of Shenmue 1 and 2's story before this kickstarter is up. Just so people might have the chance to be interested in the story.

I thought that meant that he'd do the same like with Shenmue 3, but that would be the best case scenario. I doubt another KS for a Shenmue project would even gather this much money. After all 3 is riding on the "15 years and people still care? Holy crap, these must have been amazing, will support!" mentality from some people (and obviously the most amazing fans too). This campaign has been a huge success, and I can't even imagine with how much it will end up, and people now know about Shenmue, it will sell.

I'm wondering how SEGA would fit in all of that.

No chance of Sony publishing Shenmue games. It's a Sega IP. I'd be less surprised to see an Xbox port of 3 announced at some point.

They could buy into exclusivity, if it does well. They might already have limited console exclusivity.

To be honest, stranger things have happened in this industry.

Sony has published plenty of 3rd party IPs in the past. Final Fantasy VII, Borderlands 2 on Vita, Resident Evil Revelations 2 on the Vita I believe is also going to be published by Sony.

Fact is, Sega just needs to license their IP out and they can sit there and do nothing but collect a check.

I think the perception of the publishing here refers to "fully funding" the game.

Sony has published third party games every now and then, but not one where they fork the entire bill. At best, some co-funding and forking the sum for ports and marketing.

If S3 is successful, could see a co-funding deal with SEGA, but I don't think it'd make good PR for Sony if future Shenmue games still had to source partially from KS.

This is shit for a project featured on the front page. But I guess without it, it would have been even worse.

I've seen projects that ask for 10% of the initial goal of this and they had days where only 10$ were pledged.

40K might not seem much here, but it is.

You're very right. It doesn't seem likely though. If the series is worth funding, and neither thought 3 was that's why we got Kickstarter, then Sega seem well positioned (being developer/publisher and owning IP). They could sell exclusivity to Sony's platform.

They're only publishing the PS4 port. The fact that it is on PC doesn't exclude X1 from having a port assuming:

A) MS steps in and funds their port
B) Sales from the game is significant enough to warrant an extra X1 port.

Well yeah. I mean Squaresoft also published the PC version of FF7 when that came out.

Are we expecting Sega to publish the PC version though?

Stream started a few moments ago.
http://www.twitch.tv/gametrailers

I love that gametrailers is taking the time to stream the whole game; should help give the kickstarter some presence.
I'm disappointed at twitch, though. Neither Shenmue I or II has a preview cover art in the games browser, effectively making it invisible unless you're actively seeking it out. Anyway, the point is I photoshopped and submitted a cover art to their stringent "no console logo/dev branding/ESRB" specifications and will do the same for Shenmue II soon.

Really wish the final character models/art will end up looking like this.

tumblr_inline_nl98tnnUpE1tnawwu.jpg

Don't see why they won't be. At that quality, it will still be significantly less detailed than characters in say, The Order 1886, but with a quality no one will complain about, least of all, fans of the series. I love those models and certainly hope that is what we see in a finished product and an HD remaster from Sega if that were to ever happen.

Joy most of all.

I really hope Sega releases an HD collection of 1 & 2. I've never played them before (even though I owned/still own a Dreamcast and owned an Xbox), but I pledged $60 toward 3 anyways.

I'm not concerned about the amount of detail but rather whether or not the 3D artist is able to properly model the characters to that likeness.
