Transformers: Devastation (Platinum Games) - SDCC trailer

Are we expecting Platinum to deliver a great action game based on a beloved franchise? Hmm.

You? IDK. Me? Thinking of Korra.

Have you ever played a Platinum game before? They have their duds like Korra but games like Metal Gear Rising and Bayonetta 2 are amazing action games

Alright. Now from everything except the character art, does this look more like Korra or like MGR/Bayo design? Be honest.

I could be completely wrong here and I'll be the first one happy about a great TF game (I loved the first Cybertron game, will check out 2 as well), but I just can't imagine this turning out great.

Honestly if this just turns out to be 'arenas' with a kickass Platinum fighting system I'm more than happy with it.

To say the gameplay itself looks bad ? No, no it doesn't. Korra wasn't a bad game either, it was just obviously a cut down PG game but even that's better than a lot of other games.

shrug

it's the truth, and we all know it. They stick out like a sore thumb in almost all platinum games
Just because the combat is their bread and butter doesn't mean other aspects should be off limits for criticism

just goes to show that platinum, just like any other dev, has thier flaws.

and yes they should face that kind of criticism

The gameplay looks way closer to MGR than Korra. There are a number of playable characters, they all look like they have very distinct move sets, the combos look much more complex, there's a ton of aerial stuff, counters, timing based combo extensions, etc. Similar to MGR, there are also optional sub-weapons you can collect and equip, and you can buy new moves and stuff as you progress in the game. There is supposed to be a full story campaign mode, and in addition to that there will be a bunch of bonus challenge stages.

Korra looked iffy from the very first gameplay videos. The only time this looked iffy was before it was formally announced. Once actual footage and game impressions came in, it was clear this is not going to be another Korra.

I enjoyed Korra a lot, got all the Trophies in it, but I don't have a whole lot of counter-arguments for people who want to say it's a bad game. The combat system is the only really good thing about it, and even that has its fair share of flaws (limited and mashy combo-ing, off-screen projectile spam, terrible camera, extremely easy to get stunlocked). Couple that with corridor level design with only iPhone endless runner levels to mix things up... Game's not great. If don't happen to be a fan of Platinum's combat there's really nothing there for you.

I'm hoping for more out of Transformers, but I'm setting my expectations squarely at 'Korra 2.0'. If it's better, awesome; if it's not, I'm still in.

Game looks great. The transformers themselves look spot on. If you want to stare at gorgeous backgrounds go "play" something else. The backgrounds just match the art of the game and the old cartoon. Go load up an old G1 episode. These environments are true to that. They are simple and your attention is drawn to what matters. The huge transforming robots fighting.

The people throwing around the term generic for the combat are making me sick. At least this game has a pretty decent chance to be fun to play as opposed to the usual dire combat we get from pretty games like Batman and TW3.

This guy speaks true words.

Bumblebee didn't get Optimus killed

Yeah, he was too busy hanging out in Unicron's digestive system.

The transformations and slow motion dodging has me thinking of Bayonetta 2 and I just get a Rising feeling in general watching the combat. Obviously we're looking at a lower budget but I think Korra always looked pretty dull. Mechanically, this looks much more fun than that game.

I think Hot Rod atoned when he threw Galvatron into deep space and obliterated Unicron.

Unfortunately those brave actions were tainted because he had to become boring, bland-ass Rodimus to do it, and that's after screwing Ultra Magnus. Hotrod, although cool, was a smh screw up. And honestly, nothing atones for getting Optimus killed. I know that seems unfair, but that's just the way it is :(

But on to brighter topics. My main robot Soundwave better be in this. I see that hack Shockwave made the cut, but I haven't noticed Soundwave. No Ke- er... Soundwave, no buy.

Yep, Soundwave's in

Would Optimus have even shot Megatron before he grabbed the blaster if Hotrod didn't run in though?

Here's in. There's video footage of his boss fight, but I don't have the link offhand.

Hot Rod needs another chance in cartoons already. The UK Comics had him and his Rodimus persona in a lot stories, and the current comics are doing him justice.

Who wouldn't want a leader like him! Bless his Spark!
Yes he did in fact have a space craft modled after his head made; and it works too!

Hell you guys worry about him 'killing Optimus', in the comics he reimnded Optimus why he is THE PRIME, and why makes the title of a Prime great and noble.

I mean, not to be a downer, but Witch Time, dodge button transformations and parry mechanics have been pretty much standard in Platinum games since the first Bayonetta, with only Revengeance and Anarchy Reigns missing out. Korra played like an amalgamation of Bayonetta and Raiden (she even had dodge offset), and Optimus Prime and buds look much the same (albeit with free-aimed projectile weapons instead of Korra's style-switching). Korra's problems weren't in the combat abilities, rather the general lack of substance, variety and polish to the game (no doubt due to the tight schedule and budget), and it won't be clear whether Transformers will suffer the same problem until we see more of it. To me it looks much more like a bigger budget Korra than a real top-tier Platinum game.

I don't know how anyone can call this one way or another yet. There are kinda bland arenas in Bayonetta 1/2 and MGR that you could use as a one off showing that would make you think "Ehh, there isn't much to this game." Likewise, there are encounters in Korra when you unlock all the bending styles and moves that could make you think "That has to be part of a big Platinum Games campaign." We don't really know a lot at this point.

True, it's too early to judge.

Until we see some more exciting setpiece levels, though, I remain skeptical.

Well I've let my optimism be known, but it could really turn out one way or the other. I mean, Metal Gear Rising was Platinum salvaging a game that was in development hell, and that turned out fantastic.

Metal Gear Rising's Director is directing this game.

Even if it turns out bad the core gameplay will be better than anything out there (except for Platinum's own games)

Hahaha, Grimlock looks great.

Yeah, this is looking great. Combos, witch time, car transformations, whee!

Platinum excels at rival fights and character-sized bosses (Desperados, Jeanne and Lumen Sage, Vorkken), so hopefully the boss fights in here against individual Decepticons kick arse and offer a good fun challenge.

Has to have 'You've got the touch' playing over the end credits.

It just has to.

You got the power! Yeeeeeeeeeah!

Yo, that suplex.

Taste it haters.

TASTE IT.

Do we know who the composer is? Because everything sounds like Jamie Christopherson.

Man, this shit really is Bayonetta, right down to the transformation combo enders replacing wicked weaves, vehicle transform for panther within, there's a bat within teleport, even a lot of similar animations.

They have a solid melee core, for sure. I hope they really push the shooting elements to differentiate it. They already have the building blocks to get Vanquish-y with it, if they want. Transform into a car, drive around to get into position, transform back, aim (hopefully with slow-mo at some point), fire off some shots, etc. I love how seamless it all is. Do a flashy melee combo to knock them away, then whip out a rocket launcher or some shit and finish them off from a distance. Could be incredible.

I don't think we've seen an equivalent to Moon of Mahla Kahla or MGR's parry yet. I wonder if there is one.

There is.

And yeah, the comparisons with Korra are really off-base the moment we saw the game in motion. The animations look better, the controls look more responsive, attacks have proper momentum and reaction effects and even the small sample of stuff we've seen almost matches the enemy variety in Korra already. Whether it is because of extra staff, extra development time or having a basic framework to iterate on it certainly looks like a solid improvement. Is it going to be top-tier Platinum? Probably not, but that still leaves a generous range of positive qualifiers.
