Can you not report nasty online players to Nintendo?

If you go to your friends list on Wii U, you can bring up a list of people you've played online with recently. From there, you can at least block them from interacting with you. I don't recall if there's a report button, but I can't check right now, because I'm on my way to work.
I'm quite certain this is correct, and they do not need a Miiverse profile to appear here.

I dislike this whole attitude that amounts to "man up you pussy". Why should someone playing online have to deal with harassment or trash talk or slurs or vulgarity in a fucking childrens game? Yeah, online interactions aren't rated blah blah. That still doesn't mean you should just roll over and take shit. That stuff needs to be punished in a way to prevent people from being shits. Yeah, they can just make another account but then, they have to make another account. It's busy work they will have to go through as a price for being a shit online.

Like, what about when you beat someone online in a game and then get a PSN or XBL message calling you a faggot cunt nigger? That should be allowed right and we should all just man up because that should be the standard because 4chan and bullshit right? I dunno about you guys but if someone harasses me I like to report them and maybe they will get banned.

And they "win" by keeping their accounts and keeping the ability to harass and spew shit, they lose by getting their accounts banned and having to make a new one (and on PS4/XB buying more Gold).

Steady on with the swearies chum.

Eh...Those are normal behaviors for young people.
Am I missing something about young people+internet?

Even without the internet, it was still the norm during playground period.

Even if you are concerned for young children, well, it is up the parents to monitor these young kids online activities in the end.

Might as well report the rest if the internet.

You shouldn't play against other people if you cannot handle some trash talk. And if you cannot handle trash-talk/insults just mute/block them instantly.

Maybe with Nintendo it is a bit different because of the children. Are there any requirements for creating online accounts?

Are you new to online gaming OP?

stay classy GAF

OT: good on you OP. actions have consequences. if the person you're intending to report is young then this will be a good learning experience for them about online etiquette. if the person you're intending to report is an adult then they should have known better anyway.

People here saying this behavior is normal are disgusting and just as bad as the guy the op was describing. This shouldn't be a normal online behavior and everyone should do their part to make this stop. The hostile internet environment that is being perpetrated by kids and adolescents is the cancer of our hobby and we adults should try to do something about it. This isn't normal behavior and just because it's anonymous doesn't mean it's not alright.

Nintendo for the most part doesn't allow communication against random opponents for this exact same reason, and it kinda leaked into Smash because of the tag system they have since Melee. I'm grateful for that because it allows me to communicate against others even though it gets abused by people. Karst, you should absolutely tweet it to Nintendo, don't listen to the moron saying you shouldn't do it because they are in mourning, they are there to do their job and protect Nintendo's image.

Maybe I'm just thicker skinned but I've never been so outraged by swear words in an online match that I felt the need to take pictures, tweet the owners of the platform AND make a thread on Gaf about it.

Come on, it was 3 swear words that flashed up on his screen in tiny letters for a couple of seconds. I'm not saying I agree with it, but it's hardly doing anyone any harm unless they're really easily upset by swear words. You sound like Maud Flanders with this 'cancer of our hobby' nonsense, there are far bigger problems in gaming than some kid finding creative ways to swear at you. I'm not usually one to tell people to just ignore a problem, but this is something that could very easily be ignored and nothing bad would happen as a result.

Most games have a system in place to easily report users that are being offensive or annoying in some form. Granted, often this often doesn't actually do anything (looking at Valve for example), but I can understand the frustration of OP when you see a twat have free reign to be annoying without at least having an option to do something about it.

there's a reason why a lot of people avoid online games and the instance in the OP is an example. it's not that hard to understand, really. also it seems like it didn't do the OP any harm, he just seems to understand that this behavior could do someone out there harm and he wanted to do something about it. I really don't see what the issue is here. it's the OP's time and effort, not anyone else's.

He hardly has 'free reign' when he has to result to changing his name and using 8 or 9 characters at a time to vent his childish rage.

What harm would it do? Maybe I'm too relaxed but I wouldn't be worried if my daughter saw someone say FUKYOU for a few seconds when she was playing Smash Bros. I disagree that this specific incident was worth the time and effort invested into trying to get the kid banned or whatever, but that's the OP's problem. I really don't get why people avoid online play because they might get cursed at, that seems silly to me.

Nintendo of Australia is so behind the times that they don't even use courier kangaroos — you have to wrestle a crocodile and hope it'll begrudgingly agree to bring your letter to Nintendo's secret base in the Outback. And most crocs are petty and won't oblige until K. Rool is a character in Smash Bros.

Also, OP, I'd just find another person to play against. They're gone as soon as you disconnect from them.

For a company that cares so much about a "clean online experience", they somehow didn't see that coming.
I did see remarks like that ( usually after beating someone who's clearly not good), and I was also wondering how you're suppose to report someone like that.
Now I am seeing it more like a reward for making someone spew salt out of their eyes

forgive me for suggesting this if it's not the case but I think you're just being dense. it's pretty obvious why some would avoid online games, the communities can be extremely toxic.

What about people avoiding online because they don't want to hear about themselves or their mothers getting raped. Online animosity is a real problem and people getting offended shouldn't be discouraged from taking action and reporting sociopaths.

I play smash a lot and just meet them with a stay salty because you can't report people, but it doesn't mean it's normal behavior that should be tolerated.

I know right? They should just get thicker skin and man up.

It's not that I agree with the behavior and I can't even blame the OP for wanting to report it but the reactions here are a bit crazy. We have people preaching about "cancer to our hobby" ferchrissakes.

I play online as "Cocklord." I just want everyone to know that while I am, in fact, the Lord of the Cocks, there is no ill intent and I am not trying to persecute anyone. It's a secular society, and your dick doesn't have to worship me, although it is advisable.

I don't know what "Cocklord" means, I just wanted to see if it works in-game, and it does!

Guys, there's no great mystery or debate here. The OP clearly isn't traumatized or shocked at the horror of seeing some curse words. All he wants is an option to report abusive online behavior, just like we can here on GAF.

Calling them sociopaths is a strong word, it's more than likely just a kid acting tough because he's on the internet. Maybe you guys are different, but that stuff really doesn't bother me in the slightest, I can easily ignore it and move on with my day. If it bothers you personally then fine, report and do whatever. All I'm saying is I don't get why people are so easily bothered by stupid shit like this.

I'm not being dense, I just find it really easy to avoid that stuff and to not let it get to me. Why should it bother me that some child across the globe is making fun of my mother, a woman they've never met?

You got so mad at tag spamming in for glory that you took pictures and want to report the person? I dunno, maybe I'm desensitized to cuss words, but you could have just left the match and not had to deal with it.

not all people are like you. I feel like that's the easiest answer.

I mean... They are just swear words. It's nothing to get completely up in arms about. That said, being a jerk on the internet is gross and I don't see why an option to report this persob would be a negative. I'm curious what the answer to this question is. It seems strange that there isn't already a system in place.

For real though OP it was probably a dumb kid. Swear words are par for the course at that age particularly when you're fairly certain you won't get caught like I'm sure this person was.

Different reactions to the same stimuli and a different tolerance threshold. Simple.

Something to do with chickens no doubt.

A year or two ago there was an Injustice player that was quite verbally abusive, rage quit constantly, and harassed people in the Miiverse community with multiple accounts. One guy I used to play with got fed up and actually called Nintendo. They console banned the guy from Miiverse and maybe even online play.

It doesn't bother me. Me posting in this thread doesn't equate to me being bothered by it.

You called such a reaction "silly" and that you "don't get" why someone should care, indicating that you spent a moment ruminating on the subject. It's perhaps not keeping you up at night, but the level of concern expressed by others does bother you to the lowest possible extent, otherwise you would pay it absolutely zero consideration in the way you have chosen to do so.

It's odd that you're running such a massive campaign against this guy. They're internet words. Yeah, he's being nasty but it will happen no matter what. Plus, you're giving the kid what he wants since you're still so worked up about it.

Kids are bound to run into these things on the internet and it helps them learn that words from anonymous strangers rarely matter. Sticks and stones...

So why are you so concerned that he's so concerned that the OP is concerned?

What? I've been gaming online consistently for over a decade and have never come across people saying they are going to rape my mother...have you actually had extensive experience with multiplayer on a non-Nintendo system or is this just an assumption of how people behave? There's always going to be bad apples as evidence by the fact that people find ways to curse despite Nintendo's draconian moderation policies, but the worst I've been called is a racial slur or something homophobic. Even as a minority this doesn't bother me because I can just leave the match or mute but not everyone feels the same way I do I guess.

So why are you so concerned that he's so concerned that the OP is concerned?

Because I'm not a fan of people calling other's concerns "silly" because they don't match with their own expected reaction to the same thing. At least I'm not pretending that I don't care, when my participation clearly indicates that, on some level, I do. Especially when calling out the actions or thoughts of others.

I think you're looking for things that aren't there. I spend no more effort on my posts in these threads that I would on any other post. If you want to take that to mean that I was for displaying anything other that curiosity at the OP's actions the go ahead.

And yes, I do think it's silly.

I don't get some of the posts in this thread.

He isn't asking for ways to cope with the psychological damage from SUCKMYDICK and URPUSSY, he's asking how to report people, that simple.

You guys keep telling him to "Let it go" or "I would never care about it" or "get over it" but it sounds like some of you can't let go or get over the fact that he simply wants to report someone whom you claim you would never care about.

If it doesn't affect you, and you are saying it would never affect you... why are you trying to derail his attempt to report them?

OT: I'm not really sure what you can do, but its good that you have pictures. Tweeting is not a bad idea imo.
