fear not, good sir(or ma'am). As a fellow parent, we too, own a diaper genie. My wife, was appalled at the cost of the diaper genie refills, so she looked it up online. Not sure if it was this site, but this is the basic gist of what we do. Though I haven't noticed that it does knock the pleasant odor down as much as the diaper genie refills, seems the same to me.

The regular trash bags are super cheap, compared to the refills.
