I'd bet Money on Urien and Alex being on the initial roster. Also, yea Birdie is a Street Fighter 1 character, so there goes that.

So 4 alpha characters on bottom right with two 3rd strike characters top right....makes sense to me
Siliconera rumor is based on another list here, which iirc listed 2 returning SF2 characters - Zangief and Dhalsim
This could be the way it is organized too. I guess we will see as time goes on.
edit: My mistake. I thought the siliconera rumor was the one that was posted here much earlier.

That list is already out the window because it would mean 20* characters, but 16 is now confirmed. Also that Siliconera rumor stuff wasn't based off the list, it was just a coincidence.

Actually Siliconera said they got their assurances from reliable sources. The idea that they got them from the lists doesn't really fit their MO and is purely conjecture

I was pretty confident it would be Dhalsim, Zangief and Akuma in the SF2 section, Alpha would be Karin, R.Mika, Birdie, Charlie, and then 4 new characters.
Either way, I'm happy. I want Alex and Urien, but I also think that the core list doesn't NEED to include them since the game will likely be updated frequently with a few characters.

Yeah but even in SF4 I don't recall them ever respecting the difference between SF1 and SF2 introduced characters, they were always basically bundled together.

The last SFIV returning vet will probably be Sakura or Juri. Sakura just cause of Karin probably in the game and them two are rivals. Karin's entire motivation is Sakura.

Even without my personal biases kicking in, I'd be tempted to say it's likely Juri. Absolutely no idea why but it just feels like they'd probably want to bring along at least one of the new characters they made in the last entry of the series :3

They can go the MKX route and feature DLC characters as well as other characters in the story mode. So Sakura could be a story character without actually being playable in the game initially.
I seriously doubt Sakura is in. While she isn't a Ryu clone she still says Hadoken, for such a small cast of 16 I dint think they will putting her in just cause her rival will be in. Same for Guile. I reckon it will be Juri simply because she is popular, we also need more females but the main reason is she will referent SFIV. I remember Capcom saying they want to have all SF characters from various past games.

Still, it is a reasonable request in a 16 character roster.
I actually feel like, this time around, neither of them will be school girls. That is, if both of them make a return. This game isn't afraid to redesign the characters, unlike SF4.

That was her motivation. This is an entirely new game with an entirely new story. Karin is not a particularly complex character -- she can easily be written to reflect Capcom's new vision for her.
To be fair, in the text just below, I did mention that the Street Fighter 2 section could just as easily be returning characters from SF4 too.

Yeah, I think I would go with this one.
Did they become good friends later on? Sakura had few comments about Karin in her victory lines.
