Fighting Games Weekly | July 20-26 | No Gods or Kings, Only Tears

Chillin at the airport right now. Evo was fun as fuck. Y'all just don't know how much emotion is in the room unless you're there. A stream don't cut it. Make the flight next time and save those pennies.

Also I found it hilarious how Gamerbee was the crowd favorite until 1 round of continuous healing, then the crowd turned on him lmao (made some money off those games tho)

Also, to Karst, Apologyman hates 2P side because he just doesn't practice it. Everyone knows it, so they use it to their advantage. His own fault for not practicing, and it was dumb to try and use that as an argument for two button dash. Unless I read it wrong, I only saw the post for about two seconds.

Shoutouts to everyone I met, with a special one to Arturo who admitted to being hella blitzed last year and didn't remember meeting me and Shouta last year at the after party lol

I got my SFV beta code about 10 minutes ago as well. Redeemed it online and didn't give me an option to add to my queue. Guess it'll be up for download in a couple days, hopefully before the 23rd.

GamesBeat: You keep saying yourself that if somebody told you about this, you would be skeptical of it. Is that a concern of yours, that the fighting game community is sometimes a bit traditionalist and this might be a hard sell for them?

Killian: Absolutely it’s a hard sell for them. Traditionalist is the nicest possible way to put it.

...For us, you’re right, the immediate Internet reaction to this I expect to be very broadly negative.

Heh

Yeah the robot designs don't do anything for me in Rising Thunder. Everything is just looking very plain. The geometry makes round things look not as round, UI is very basic, backgrounds are very basic, seems like the same few textures/materials are used everywhere, etc.

Just very plain.

compare against robot designs from like 15 years ago

Since Street Fighter 5 will have unified online play, what about cross-save compatibility for buying the game on multiple platforms? It just seems to me that not having something like that would be a major detractor for people wanting to play the game on multiple platforms.

Incoming 'things look better' DLC for this f2p fighting game. Unlock crates and then maybe your fighting game character won't look like Vectorman!

Don't hold your breath, a unified SF account system is still in limbo and they haven't been talking about that. Even if that happens, it's not looking good for cross-save functionality. Mostly because it caters to an extremely small number of players.

Just got back home. Time to watch some archives and then crash.

Zzz

Also, does anyone know what they gave out at the Killer Instinct panel? I grabbed it and left since I didn't have time but it's like some sleeve or something. :S

Something that the real pros who know the fgc have known for a while but this Evo pretty much confirmed it.

Daigo sucks at street fighter
Justin sucks at marvel

Marvel guys, would you move Hulk up a bit on the tier list? I mean, Jan had a strong showing at CEO too. He seems like the scariest character to fight against, mentally anyway. Obviously something like that is hard to quantify but I'm curious.

Well given how the currency system works, if they don't figure out some kind of Account system, they're going to run into issues. The only thing people are going to buy from PSN and Steam is Zenny, not characters or costumes.

If it's the thing they were giving out during KI top 8 then it's like a cloth facemask of Shadow Jago? Not sure what to call it.

Hulk with drones and lariat ain't no joke but that's about it for me. Doesn't make him go up for me but with those 2 assists he's a huge threat (as we have seen thanks to kbr)

I still can't believe team big bodies won Evo....

KBR winning EVO was the highlight for me. The greatest example of self sacrifice and hard work getting paid off.

I think it's gonna be necessary. At the very least, if Capcom did their own servers- that might stop some of the Steam disconnecting issues or PSN outage issues.

Noticed when playing Ultra- Steam seems to disconnect me from about one match per hour. The connection comes back after about 10-30 seconds, but it leads to dropped matches. That's a bit worrisome, and PSN has its own outage issues.

I was inspired by EVO to reinstall Divekick because it's really the only fighting game I can play on my Vita. Is there still a living Divekick community?

Yeah I think keeping account information server-side is a given for any game with an economy that affects other players, but I look at it as a series of increasingly difficult problems or discouraged practices for developers with decreasing payoff:

1) Make your game work multiplatform (and one that is funded by one platform holder at that)
2) Allow for cross-platform play
3) Create an easy solution for people to invite and play with friends on different platforms (which is difficult because this is usually wholly allocated to the platform-level friend systems in the interest of user friendliness)
4) Create a system for cross-platform saving and syncing that simultaneously respects not just both platform's file systems or intricacies, but also then plays nice with both first party (PS+/Steam Cloud) cloud backup systems for the saves.

I was going to pre-order SF5 on Amazon until I saw the $59 turn into $92 when converted into Canadian.

I guess I'll wait until tomorrow and hope that my local EB got the codes in.

Hulk for me has always been Mid tier with Haggar and Sentinel around his tier as well.

Here's my tier list.

KBR's performance at EVO doesn't really change my ranking of Hulk. Just like Justin Wong won with Wolverine/Storm/Akuma which isn't a top tier team, this is more of a case of the player carrying the team. I say the same for Jan.

To be honest the only characters I never saw as being tournament winning caliber characters are the bottom 10 and maybe bottom 11. Every other character on that list can win a major.

Like for example, I think RR is better than either Sentinel or Haggar. I say the same for Deadpool. Those characters just don't have the dedicated specialist that Hulk has via KBR. Closest thing is like Dual Kevin for Deadpool. And I think Spider Man is better than those two.

Single character tiers in Marvel never really told the whole story. Hulk is an extremely limited character. But when you back him with Sent drones and Haggar, he becomes extremely scary.

Single character tier list take into equation a character in their most optimal team set up.

Morrigan single isn't on the caliber of Magneto but with assists she is at least as good. This is why she will always rank as a top tier.

It was $60 for a few weeks. Also the E3 deal brought that down further ($42).

I even posted the deals in this thread too :(

Well, Valve already did 4 with Portal 2, and I imagine they offer that technology/code to developers that want it. With Cloud Saves, it's not an automatic thing, particularly on PSN, which can still cause issues.

If Capcom is set on turning SF into a service-based game, they're going to have to create their own back-end for it, otherwise it's going to fall apart.

I feel Hagger should be higher just because of those gross pushblock/command grab setups.

Only got to see some of EVO because I was at Da Beach(in NorCal lol) but was able to see what was playing in the evening. I am suppremely impressed how GamerBee fought and beat many of his demons and once again amazed how good Infiltration is. AiAi's Juri looks like a marvel character.

Marvel was pretty amazing and I was rooting for RayRay, Apologyman and KBR but KBR sacrificed so much and feel his championship was more than deserved. Seeing Sentinel just warms my heart. I still hate Hulk.

I missed MKX and Smash4 and Melee.

Watching GG makes me want to play Faust and GG in general again and I want to play UMvC3 again with my workmates.

Rising Thunder's aesthetic is more in line with western indie art direction than the typical Japanese stuff everyone associates with fighting games, and I think the simplicity is even more important when you're trying to present it as a mechanically simple game as well. My only issue is that the robots look a bit too similar to each other, especially when there's an opportunity for exaggerated proportions/scales since none of the characters are human.

But yeah, it's not designed for the sort of people who think Aquarion is a good mech design

Doesn't matter... other characters have nastier stuff even characters within the same bracket. What Haggar can do pales in comparison to what Jill can do and she is more mobile than Haggar on top of that.

Haggar's main value is the Lariat assist which is like the only true reversal assist in the game. That on top of him being a playable point which the added bonus of stopping rushdown play makes him viable. He's bad against the heavy zoning teams but you should be countering that by having characters on your team that can counter zoning like Hawkeye. Which is why a Hawkeye + Haggar combo is actually pretty good, Haggar can beat the match ups Hawkeye is bad at like Wolverine and Hawkeye can beat the match ups that Haggar is bad at like Dormammu.

Hulk is a better point than Haggar because he can force himself in but he lacks the assist so they are on par with each other when you break down the tools.

About the KBR salt. Besides the country factor, don't you think it's also salt of shame? Cuz many people that are salty didn't take him seriously back in the day.
Let's be honest, KBR was a gimmick player for almost every strong player at the marvel scene.

This win has hurt them a lot.

LMAO

Not gonna lie... I am more interested in the Rising Thunder alpha than the SFV beta...

Probably the only person in the world who would think this. THE HORROR!!!!

Goddamn hipster. But seriously, I am as well, if only to aid in my attempt to hook people who aren't into the executional aspect of fighting games. I backed Pocket Rumble for the same reason.

Of course it's a salt of shame.

People lost to a Hulk/Haggar team using their Zeros/Morrigans/Magnetos which are on paper far superior in the match up.

Like you can't even say that KBR won with an over powered team and blame the team like people used to do against ChrisG or other Zero players. They got out played and they got out read which is impossible for them to admit with their massive egos.

People were pressing hella buttons during Marvel Top 8 when they shouldn't have been. Granted, its a high pressure position and I respect that but still........hella buttons were being pressed when they shouldn't have been :P
