There have been plenty of companies who made Fighting games before. But there are only three developers who remain consistent and synonymous with the genre.

First, there's Capcom. The company who effectively created the modern fighting game as we know it, particularly with the release of Street Fighter II, which became a global phenomenon upon it's release. With several revisions, and a diverse cast of recognizable and memorable characters, Street Fighter II truely brought the fighting game genre to life pioneering concepts and mechanics that are still being used in fighters today.

Capcom kept the train going with other fighting game series, including it's Marvel licensed titles, which eventually evolved into the beloved Marvel Vs. Capcom series, kick-starting the trend of its characters picking fights with other companies. And it's since built on it's SF legacy with other fan favorite series like Rival Schools, Darkstalkers, Power Stone, Star Gladiator, and Red Earth. While Capcom today focuses entirely on Street Fighter, it's legacy titles are still loved by gamers today.

There's also Capcom's biggest rival in the field, SNK. Following the success of Street Fighter II, SNK leveraged the former Capcom staff they hired to make it's own mark on the genre, beginning with Art of Fighting (which led to Capcom parodying their efforts with Street Fighter's Dan Hibiki).

Following other series like Fatal Fury and Samurai Showdown, it culminated into the King of Fighters franchise, which pitted SNK's entire roster of characters against each other in 3v3 battles. SNK's rivalry with Capcom eventually led to the Capcom Vs. SNK games, which melded the gameplay of Street Fighter, with the 3v3 ruleset of KoF. SNK is still active today, having just released a new Fatal Fury game, City of the Wolves in 2025.

But then you have the relative new kid. Arc System Works. After spending much of its earlier history as a relatively obscure developer, 1998's Guilty Gear broke the company into notoriety thanks to it's fast paced, hectic take on the genre.

Since then, Arc has gone on to create the BlazBlue series, has published the Under Night in Birth games from French-Bread, and developed various licensed fighters, including Persona 4 Arena, and Dragon Ball FighterZ. Currently they're hard at work on developing Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls with Marvel Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment. And all this, on top on continuing to support the Guilty Gear series.

So between these three developers, which has had the better fighting game catalog, both in terms of past releases and current titles?

I'll admit that I have pretty little experience with the genre, but Capcom's catalogue is amazingly diversified and that alone would put them on a higher tier for me.

Just like the user above me, I don't have the biggest experience in this genre, but Capcom's contributions seem to be very influential. Street fighter 2 in particular.

Not Arc System Works that's for sure. All style no substance.

Between Capcom and SNK, I think I prefer Capcom. They made more varied games back then.

Nowadays ? I don't like anything they made since Street Fighter IV (included). Their games are beyond ugly. And SNK has become a mobile game company, their games are also ugly as sin. There is not a single game that reaches the heights of what they made during the 1990s and 2000s.

Namco
SEGA
Distant 3rd place so far behind they're in another galaxy, Capcom.
Distant 4th place past the known universe in a white void, Arc System Works and SNK.

Honorable mention: Itagaki-era Tecmo.

Capcom was the staple of every single arcade in the early 90s. It wasn't even close, and I was never an MK fan. Killer Instinct is probably my all time favorite but RARE isn't exactly synonymous with the genre.

I love a lot of SNK games, and even a few Arc Sys games, but it's Capcom by a landslide and it's not remotely close.

To be frank, Arc Sys doesn't belong in this comparison. I love the Persona Arena games and Guilty Gear is always great, but none of their other fighters held me for any period of time whatsoever, and I've tried all of them. Fighter Z is.....fine, Blazblue is absolute trash, Under-Night was so hyped up I checked it out back on PS3; fun, but I found the art style just awful to look at, (weaby), and I remain utterly unconvinced by the upcoming Marvel title, (I don't like anime art styles with my western IP, such is why I hate the look of Marvel Rivals as well), so yeah, I just can't see Arc Sys being in this conversation, and the fact that you mentioned them before Namco or Sega is just.....I mean it's interesting OP, that's all I'm sayin.

Capcom 1987 to 2008 was great but that time has passed
Tatsunoko VS Capcom was the last great fighting game from Capcom
A lot of rubbish after that (well SF5 was good)

For the last 15+ years Arc has been king

Retro I'd say Capcom....Modern I'd say Arc....voted Arc cause why not

Capcom and Arcsys are both solid answers. Capcom games are more accessible while Arcsys games let you do some insane shit. I've been kind of intimidated by Arcsys games really and never given them a fair chance. SNK's always seemed a step behind technically.

That said the real answer is surprise dark horse Nintendo, because they made the best fighting game ever accidentally, Super Smash Bros. Melee.

Even if outside the arcades Mortal Kombat or Tekken have been selling more until very recently, for me the king of fighting games always has been Capcom.

Who happen to be the ones that made the genre mainstream with Street Fighter II, and are the current market leaders with Street Fighter 6. Street Fighter has been my favorite series, but they also made many other ones I loved (Darkstalkers, Rival Schools, vs X-Men/Marvel/SNK/Tekken, Jojo, Warzard, Star Gladiator...)

First of all, Under-Night is made by French-Bread with Arc System Works acting as a publisher. Many other titles attributed to them are similar. Secondly, Capcom has been outsorcing the majority of their development since Street Fighter IV. Eighting (of Bloody Roar fame) has been behind most of their best received modern releases. Lastly, SNK went bankrupt in 2000 & since then has had its IPs corpses paraded around by various parties. I feel the need to also mention that Namco's pedigree & direction declined after merger with Bandai around 2006. It is marked by the transition from Tekken 6 to Bloodline Rebellion (with Lars & Alisa) & the odd release of Soul Calibur IV with Star Wars guests.

If we are to compare the best titles released by all those parties I would say Tekken (3-6) and Soul Calibur (SE-SCII:AE) by Namco reached higher peaks than the rest. Capcom did great work with Street Fighter (New Challengers, Alpha 2/3, & III: Second Impact), DarkStalkers (Vampire Hunter & Vampire Savior), & JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. SNK similarly hit it out of the park with Real Bout Fatal Fury, King of Fighters ('95-2000), & Last Blade. Arc System Works peaked with Guilty Gear XX but has been blowing away the competition with their 2.5D presentation in the modern era at the cost everything else. Another developer that gets overlooked but is consistently a top seller is NetherRealm Studios. Sure, many of their releases have been underwhelming but Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, Mortal Kombat 11, and Injustice 2 will stand the test of time. (Anyone that thinks NRS peaked with MK9 has not played it recently.)

P.S. With all that said, I am most looking forward to Sega's Virtua Fighter 6 and the next installment of French-Bread's Under-Night (if they actually do new stages and mechanics instead of adding to what they have). I am not sure if Koei Tecmo's Dead or Alive 7 is ever going to get greenlit but would also enjoy seeing what refinements and innovations it could bring.

P.S.S. Super Smash Bros. and its defective ilk are not fighting games.

As much as I love Samurai Showdown, Capcom has my favorite fighting franchise and a ton of others that I enjoy playing. I've never cared for Arc System Works titles.
