European human zoos

I sat for a minute between crying and raging out.

This is why there are people that refer to people that look like me as animals. There was a time when their ancestors would come see people that looked like me, in a fucking zoo.

Not a crazy hystorical photo per se, but I love obscure architecture stories and at the same time it's always amazing to see an architectural tribute 6,000 miles away.

Madison Square Garden, NYC (1910s photo)

Madison Square Garden was an indoor arena in New York City, the second by that name, and the second to be located at 26th Street and Madison Avenue in Manhattan. Built in 1890 at the cost of a half-million dollars and closing in 1925, the arena hosted numerous events, including boxing matches, orchestral performances, light operas and romantic comedies, the annual French Ball, both the Barnum and the Ringling circuses, and the Democratic National Convention in 1924, which nominated John W. Davis after 103 ballots. It was replaced by the third Madison Square Garden, the first to be located away from Madison Square.

The architect, Stanford White, was killed on the rooftop of Madison Square Garden in 1906
White’s presence at the roof garden theatre of Madison Square Garden on the night of June 25, 1906 had been an impromptu decision. White had originally planned to be in Philadelphia on business; he postponed the trip when his son, Lawrence, made an unexpected visit to New York. They dined at Martin's, near the theatre, where Harry Kendall Thaw and his wife Evelyn Nesbit also dined; Thaw apparently saw White there.
That evening’s theatrical presentation was the premiere performance of Mam'zelle Champagne. During the show’s finale, "I Could Love A Million Girls", Thaw approached White, produced a pistol, and standing some two feet from his target, said "You've ruined my wife", and fired three shots at White, killing him instantly. Part of White’s face was torn away and the rest of his features were unrecognizable, blackened by gunpowder. The initial reaction of the crowd was one of good cheer, as elaborate party tricks among the upper echelon of New York society were common at the time. However, when it became apparent that White was dead, hysteria ensued.

That tower was a replica of the Giralda, Seville, Spain, my hometown.

The Giralda (Spanish: La Giralda ; Arabic: الخيرالدة‎) is a bell tower of the Seville Cathedral in Seville, Spain.[1] It was originally built as a minaret during the Moorish period, with a Renaissance style top subsequently added by Spaniards. The Giralda was registered in 1987 as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO along with the Alcazar and the General Archive of the Indies. The tower is 104.1 m in height and remains one of the most important symbols of the city, as it has been since medieval times.

I've read/watched things on this, the thought of it scared the pants off of me. These particular images remind me of the Wolfenstein ET level though. They didn't get the scale right at all in game.

This is absolutely awesome. Would have loved to been there.
That's an animation. The Tsar Bomb footage is probably the most terrifying thing I've ever seen. It really makes me despise humanity.

The elephant executions were pretty horrific too.

The Tsar Bomba, the biggest nuclear bomb ever detonated.

This is how it looked like (Seen from a 161 KM)

It may seem like any other bomb, until you see this comparison:

Blew my mind.

An extra spooky part, the picture included in the article shows the explosion overlaid on Paris. If the Tsar Bomba was dropped in the center of Paris, the entire city would have been vaporised, along with much of the surrounding countryside. And of course, would have rained down radiation across a swath of France, and blotted out the Sun over the area.

That's nuts. I've seen pictures before showing quite the modern progressive place. Sad that it went bad. I watched a documentary years ago about old civilisations and ones of recent times and the middle east cultures were quite scientific and such before others.

Thanks, USA (and UK).

Now, School time!!

Passes the second half of February 1978. In the Department of Civil Works Distribution Sector Center, located across the street from Miguel Negrete No. 11, Colonia May 10 in the then Downtown of Mexico City, was issued the instruction to perform certain tasks, which began the evening of February 20 of that year. Already in the early morning hours of February 21, precisely at 3:30 am, advancing excavation work to build a borehole where an electric transformer would be installed to provide feedback to the downtown area, right on the corner of Guatemala and Argentina.

As in fairy tales, and in the light of the moon, Mario Alberto Espejel Pérez y Jorge Valverde Ledezma, members of the "Cuadrilla 303" of the then Compañia Luz y Fuerza del Centro, SA (and its affiliates) in liquidation, with pick and shovel hit the ground, a short distance from where general knowledge, knew they were the remains of El Templo Mayor ... when suddenly, and here's the most accurate recreation of sustained dialogue between Espejel Perez and Ledezma Valverde:

**read this with a chilango accent**
Hey, look !, I can no longer follow, Mario Alberto says to Jorge, I stumbled upon something very hard, It is like a stone.
And Jorge Valverde responds:
So, óoorale! What is?
Again, Mario Alberto says: I told you it is like a stone.
Jorge: Keep going ...
Mario Alberto: ... no i can't, is already a rock and stuff ...
George: Well, then, Do as you like!

**stop chilango accent**

These were more or less the first words that crossed at the time the comrades of the then Compañia Luz y Fuerza y Fuerza del Centro, in liquidation, words which were confirmed days later, both the Ing. Orlando Gutiérrez, supervisor of the work, as Dr. Raul Martin Arana Alvarez, who was on duty at that time, in the Department of Rescue Archaeological National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH onwards).

Excavations at what is today El Templo Mayor, pictured is the monolith of Coyolxauhqui which was found during construction in 1978

In Aztec mythology, Coyolxauhqui (Classical Nahuatl: Coyolxāuhqui /kojoɬˈʃaːʍki/, "Face painted with Bells") was a daughter of Coatlicue and Mixcoatl and is the leader of the Centzon Huitznahuas, the southern star gods. Coyolxauhqui was a powerful magician and led her siblings in an attack on their mother, Coatlicue, because Coatlicue had become pregnant by a mortal and that was shameful.

The miraculous pregnancy of Coatlicue, the maternal Earth deity, made her other children embarrassed, including her oldest daughter Coyolxauhqui. As Coatlicue swept the temple, a few hummingbird feathers fell into her chest. Coatlicue’s child Huitzilopochtli sprang from her womb in full war armor and killed Coyolxauhqui and her other 400 brothers, who had been attacking their mother. He cut off her limbs, then tossed her head into the sky where it became the moon, so that his mother would be comforted in seeing her daughter in the sky every night.

A large shield-shaped stone relief reflecting this story was found at the base of the stairs of the Templo Mayor. On this disk, Coyolxauhqui is shown spread out on her side, with her head, arms and legs chopped away from her body. The orbiting full moon in the stone carving reflects her position as the moon goddess. She is distinguished by bells of eagle down in her hair, a bell symbol on her cheek, and an ear tab showing the Mexica year sign. As with images of her mother, she is shown with a skull tied to her belt. Scholars also believe that the decapitation and destruction of Coyolxauhqui is reflected in the pattern of warrior ritual sacrifice. First, captives’ hearts were cut out. Then the bodies were cast from the temple. At the bottom of the stairs, near the Coyolxauhqui stone, the bodies were decapitated and dismembered.

Archaeologist Angel Garcia Cook, and an image of Coyolxauhqui, fresh from a successful "bath". As noted, they "cauterized" her wounds as far as far as possible and restoring permitted.

i remember reading or watching a documentary where they told the guys who dropped an A-Bomb to wear an eyepatch, because their eyes were gonna get fried :/

The destruction of the original Madison Square Garden is one of the most egregious architectural losses in NYC history.

The person in your second picture is not Simo Häyhä. The gun isn't a M/28 "Pystykorva" and the mask is wrong. Also, Häyhä wouldn't have kept his bayonet attached to his rifle, since it decreases accuracy. The person in the picture is most likely a Swedish volunteer, from what I recall.
Here's a few pictures of Häyhä during the Winter War:

"When asked in 1998 how he had become such a good shooter, Häyhä answered "Practice." When asked if he regretted killing so many people, he said, "I only did my duty, and what I was told to do, as well as I could." "

The M28 basically a Mosin Nagant copy and it is widely reported that the rifle's POA is better with the bayo attached. The rifles were often sighted with the bayos attached. I have confirmed this to be true with my own 91/30 and M44.

wonder why they chose france as an example lol

Off to the fucking ignore list, don't bring that shit to this great thread.

You too alfredo, for quoting it.

Don't worry Russia is working on it..

Also.. didn't see anyone post this, iconic scene from the end of the second world war.
There's a story to this but I'm out and about right now. Something to the affect that they didn't know one another and he grabbed her and afterwards she smacked him

I bought a shirt with this picture on it for a dollar at some local event, but everyone in it has instruments, like they're all in a band.

Am I a bad person? I still wear it sometimes. it's way too big for me though, so I don't wear it often.
