Rise of the Tomb Raider coming to PC Early 2016. PS4 Holiday 2016

Cool, I can wait. Finished the original the other week.

While a good game it only really had one standout memorable moment and that was escaping that fortress. The rest of it was pretty forgettable.

"Didn't even hit 2 million". lol

Do you realize how much two million in sales likely generates in income compared to the cost of porting? It probably only takes a few hundred thousand at most to make it worthwhile. If that.

I realize that there's a bigger differential this time around, but it's not so dramatic that a mega game like FFXV is going to go ignored. Again, you're buying way too much into platform stereotypes. Both PS4 *and* XB1 are selling at better rates than their predecessors. There will be a larger install base on release of this game than with FFXIII for either system.

It doesn't even have to be that extreme. What if both are very good games in their own way?

So... your sticking with your guns then?

Can we get a bet going that FFXV won't clear 2 million on X1 then?

SE are probably aware of this, which is why they sought to make amends with Sony regarding FFVII:R timed exclusivity.

People keep saying this but i wonder, why would Sony care about timed exclusivity for a game that is basically going to be exclusive mindshare wise anyway?

Don't think PS4 owners even care at this point. They're getting Uncharted 4.

That's... Not how it works, normally a game that is popular in a genre opens the audience up to more games in that genre, that's why Forza Horizon is a piss poor excuse as to why Project Cars sold 2:1 in favour of Playatation in the PAL threads.

You said one million. You were *laughing* at me over one million. XB1 version sells one million. 4 year period. $50. I'm fully willing to go for that.

I'll do 2 million over 5 years for $10.

People wanting the game to not be so good.. to flop in sales. smh

Please tell me that SF V and FF VII threads are better.

Lol, PS4 is Holiday 2016, no thanks! SE might as well not release it, who is going to want this a YEAR later. I doubt it will be stellar, probably decent like its predecessor.

But it's predecessor was stellar...

Definitely getting it on X1, not waiting a year. The gameplay demos from E3 looked great.

What? I was laughing at your million(s). I don't understand how many times I have to emphasize that. Both in this thread and the last one.

As a PS4 owner I actually don't have a problem with this. Its a free market and MS are free to secure exclusivity. I'll pick up the bug free PS4 definitive edition with all the DLC for £19.99 when it arrives.

Even if it was an Xbone exclusive I'd respect MS' right to secure the series. I see this as no different to Mario being a Wii U exclusive. Sony and MS are titan. Lets let them slug it out. Competition and the free market is good for all.

Wouldn't it be worthwhile to wait and see how these games are before making statements like this? I know it seems unthinkable, but what if Tomb Raider is mind-blowingingly awesome and Uncharted 4 releases in an underwhelming state?

Judging by their predecessors I'm sure both games will be good, and both games will sell well.

LOL. Uncharted 4 releasing in an underwhelming state??? Sony could release it with just what we saw from that "full" E3 video and chances are that would be enough for it to sell and be better than Rise of the Tomb Raider. Raider looks good but it's not matching or surpassing Uncharted 4.

When was the last time Naughty Dog even released a game that's honestly lower than a 9/10? Even Uncharted 3 in which I preferred Tomb Raider was still a 9/10 in my opinion. It was only seen as a disappointment to some because Uncharted 2 was just so damn great.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see if Uncharted Collection outsells Rise of the Tomb Raider this holiday season. Definitely see Fallout 4 crushing Raider. Great move by SE to take the huge lump sum of cash but a horrible move by Microsoft as what once looked like a good investment could turn into a disaster.

Well, there are certainly factors that guarantee that a late port will sell worse than a day one port. Maybe I buy on the other platform by then. Maybe by the time it gets to my platform better stuff has come out. Maybe the allure of it being the new hotness has completely worn off and other and time hasn't been favorable to it post release. There are probably other factors at well that tell you that the audience for potential PS4 buyers is much worse one year later.

However, I think it's also insanely unfair to suggest that nobody wants the game a year later. Why would that be the case? If I like Tomb Raider but don't have a One or a PC, the PS4 release would be my first opportunity to play it. And if the game has been well regarded up to that point, why would I pass on it? Because Square Enix insulted my honor by giving me MS's table scraps? This is an honest question by the way. But I just feel like if I care more about having fun playing video games than being invested in the console wars, I'd still want to play the game if I was ever interested in it to begin with.

The way AAA works now is that you have to make a big marketing campaign for the game in order to sell well. I'm pretty sure SE will not do that , not for 1 year old port.

Do you not realize what the parentheses means?

EDIT: Forget it. I don't trust you at this point. I'd be willing to pay up, but somebody so twisting is not the type I'd trust to keep their end of the bargain.

We've gotten way off-topic at this point anyways.

It still feels like more than a little misguided to me, the first game was OK but nothing special and I'm really not convinced that I'll be wanting to buy a year old Tomb Raider game as this generation should be running at full speed for Christmas 2016.

I think I'll be happy to sit this one out unless Square Enix are hoping to work out a Plus deal with Sony or something.

Wow a year exclusive. I was expecting March to try and get the game out before Uncharted but months after will do as well.

I was salty for 5 minutes but this is a good thing. Too many games from Sony this year and early next year.

It's laugh out loud worthy to consider that Naughty Dog might theoretically be capable of releasing a game that isn't an absolute home run?

Did they say winter? I thought the only estimate was 'early 2016'. May would be a bit of a stretch but it seems like when stuff is worded this way it is always later than you assume. Like they say Releasing summer 2015 and then put it out in late September, which is fall to me. Seems like that happens a lot.

It is weird to have a date for the ps4 release but only an estimate window for the PC release that is launching earlier...

I hear you, and no, they didn't mention winter. I'm just speculating based on other estimated "early 20XX" releases of the past that weren't delayed. May, and even April don't qualify as "early" in my line of business, but who knows what SE is planning here. :-)

I think they said this a little too early.

Agreed...way too early.

I think the strategy is to get it out of the way and out of the discussion by the time the marketing hype kicks up.

Microsoft would have wanted it to be announced after the hype, but Square probably vetoed that, fast.

Your comparing a first party mascot to a timed third party game that was paid to be delayed on other platforms? Your free market isn't very healthy for consumers.

I don't like to think i am overtly critical and strict as to how the modern industry works. I don't even really care about content delays, but if its for entire games, that's where it crosses the line for me personally. There is no legitimate reason for Tomb Raider to not launch day and date on all platforms. CD needed no financial help or assistance, and were not struggling with the title to begin with.
