Rise of the Tomb Raider coming to PC Early 2016. PS4 Holiday 2016

Did I miss something?

They haven't said shit about FF7:Re.
Sure, there's all kinds of speculation (i.e., it will be timed-exclusive, like ROTR, or Sony is helping to fund/develop it, so life-time exclusive, etc.), but nothing concrete at this point. Kagari mentioned that, from what she'd heard, it would be a similar situation to Street Fighter V, but yeah... nothing officially announced yet.

I'd rather go with the official word and not rely on insider information myself. It was announced as "First on PS4," suggesting timed exclusivity, and Sony has never had an issue in the past with their 3rd party console exclusives having their PC counterpart mentioned to some degree. The only way I don't see the game coming to XB1 is if the game is coming to Nintendo's next console, and Square simply can't announce that port for obvious reasons.

Probably wouldn't boost sales as much as it would now, especially if they're trying to persuade people into being multiple console owners.

I feel like this does the complete opposite though. Now PS4 owners know definitively that it's coming to their system. I thought they'd wait until next year to announce other platforms.

It would be awesome to see these titles go head to head.

NDC is three games and immense value even for $60. About a third of PS4 owners are former 360 owners. The sell through for the consoles could be 2.5-3:1 by Holiday 2015.

TLOU remaster was a chart topping number 1 seller (in Europe) and one of the highest selling games on the system at the time. NDC has the potential to eclipse that.

Im a PS4 owner who wants to see the Xbone do better. I think this is a decent win for MS but it will cost them a ton and I don't think it will sell systems. I think most people know a PC/PS4 version will be here 6 months later and will wait. If they had locked this title down as a Titanfall style exclusive then they had a chance. Im not sure why they chose to cheapen out here. It should either be a full exclusive or not an exclusive at all.

Square puts tomb raider on everything. I dont think they'd agree to a full exclusive.

The last of us is an interesting comparison, but the last of us had all of its multiplayer plus the dlc and it wasnt released at full price and it was only a year after the original game. But still, that is a good point and it will be fun to see what happens. Its too bad the games are releasing in different months so we won't see their npd rankings.

Seems like a very long time. I doubt anyone would really care about it that much and would rather just play whatever is coming out at that time.

I do say, this makes me much more less likely to buy it a little after launch now but in the distant future. I see no rush now.

I guess we'll see when it launches on PS4 how the sales are. I think they did it because a lot of people were probably thinking it would be out by the summer at the latest. Knowing you have to wait a whole year is a long time.

If this was the case, why not wait to announce until a week or two before the games actual release for maximum damage?
Because presumably there is going to be a showing at gamescom and maybe a bundle announcement. People will go into gamescom knowing the ps4 version ain't happening anytime soon. But here's this cheap Xbox bundle coming out this fall

A 6-8 month wait I could probably excuse but a full year no matter what bonus content they include as a grovelling apology will mean I'll skip its release and buy it used or heavily reduced in 2017 if ever. Gamers are loyal customers not to be crossed and stunts like this harm your business.

I guess.

It's been over a year since Super Time Force Ultra came out on 360/xb1. Here I am still waiting on the ps4 version and I'll get it day 1. Have a PC and an XB1(just got) too.

What do you believe is going to happen in the story that means the game will be ruined if you find out what happened? The bear turns out to be Lara's father? It's actually set in the future and is a found memory being played through VR by Lara's great great great not-so-great great granddaughter? Each level is set inside a colossal beast which you have to kill to bring your dad/bear back to life after killing him earlier by accident - and doing so makes you really sad?

Or some people like the story and don't want it ruined for them? No reason to be a dick about it.

I'd get it this year for my Xbox One if I hadn't already purchased TR:DE on my PS4. I need the continuity on one system. There's so many games between now and next holiday, I'm fine with waiting that long.

Hundreds of thousands, if not a little under a million rather than millions it would have gotten otherwise.

It should be noted that even 800,000 would probably be considered an immense flop for a AAA game of this magnitude with this kind of budget. Without knowing what Microsoft paid Square Enix for this exclusivity deal it's impossible to say whether or not the trade off was worth it, but sacrificing a market with an install base of 20+ million units doesn't sound particularly business savvy to me.

Not only are they sacrificing 20m+ users, they will be entering post Uncharted 4 market with a $60 late release. I recall another Xbone timed exclusive that bombed as a late release on the PS4 last year (sorry i cant recall the name of the title).

If i was a betting man, i'd bet this deal will turn sour for MS and Square.

Square and MS should have pushed for full exclusive or not done the deal at all.

It's funny how this works out for many. You start a series on one console holder and you just want to continue the series on that particular companies hardware.

Of all the games to throw money at. I mean it probably was cheap given the reboots performance but oh man.

And releasing the same day as FO4? I guess if you've already got that exclusivity money, you can take risks, however a lot of this reads as DOA and really pointless if you were trying to reinvigorate the brand.

I can see Tomb Raider: Lara Croft Collection Xbox Bundle like ACU and AC4 last year

I'm fine with it coming out a year later, but I won't be paying $60 for it. At that point it's a year old game. I wont pay more than around $30. If it takes longer, it takes longer, if I don't get to it, oh well, their loss in revenue.

Will most likely be forgotten by holiday 2016... Hope it at least doesn't launch at full price, seeing as how the XB1 version will probably be less than 20$ by then.

Having come from the gamestop management side for 6 years (no longer there), trust me big games launching on the same day aren't a huge deal. If your game is different enough from the competition and targets another fanbase, etc.

Tomb Raider and Fallout 4 will have cross over fanbase, but it also will have their own unique fanbases to draw from. You also actually get more foot traffic by being on the same day which increases impulse purchases, etc. I know this from experience trust me. Now if you have 3 or 4 major titles launching (like the year of red dead in March) at the same day it will hurt others sales as it's too much.

To be honest, I'm very surprised Square announced PC/PS4 versions already, well before the release on Xbox 360 and Xbox One. I thought they were going to do that, like, one month after Rise of the Tomb Raider released on MS consoles. We knew it was going to happen, so the mere fact the game is coming to other consoles isn't surprising; just the announcement timing.

What a waste of money from Microsoft why couldn't they have invested it in a new ip ?

Proven commodity with a long history of past success or risky business venture that may completely drive your games division into the red.

Tough choice.

Every company should do this, it's a good thing. Transparency is good for us all.

I mean lets see the postive side. They have now a full year to optimize the game on PS4 plus put all DLC in it. So PS4 is still the best place to play but just one year later lol

I actually very much doubt that.

And this "company knows best" type of argument is not very conducive to discussion, now is it? We can use it for anything.

So it's more constructive to talk about how stupid or not stupid they are without knowing how much Microsoft paid them? Maybe Microsoft even forfeited the license fees on top of paying them a good sum.

Getting Tomb Raider hasn't stopped them from investing in new IP.

Ori came out earlier this year. We have Quantum Break, Scalebound, ReCore and Sea of Thieves announced as new IP. Also smaller titles that are digital only.

It seems pretty obvious that the deal in the first place sprouted from SE being shit scared that Tomb Raider wouldn't sell on PS4 as UC4 was also meant for the holidays. So they gambled and took what MS was offering, thinking it was better than what they would make from the PS4 version. But UC4 was delayed and they probably thought fuck it let's go all out hence the full 12 months exclusivity.

TR reboot did so well, just don't understand why SE got so scared. UC is a big franchise sure, but it's not one that brings in eye watering numbers or any of that shit. UC4 will release and sell well but there would have been more than enough room for ROTR. SE have the financials though, they obviously know what they're doing.

Sandwiched between BLOPS3 and Battlefront. Same day as FO4. I dunno man...

Oh, why even butt in with this then besides to argue? My only point was that Bioshock on 360 outsold the PS3 version. I mentioned nobody about region split until you brought it up.
Exactly. I added a thought. Sorry about that.
But Bioshock selling better on 360, with being US centric, having a 1 year headstart and with bigger installbase is not a risky bet.

I'm not saying Tomb Raider will do amazing numbers, but Tomb Raider DE STILL lists as a top seller on xb1 and ps4 digital stores regularly and still sells copies at retail. The game has legs and was very well liked.

BLOPS3 and Battlefront are more likely to eat into each others sales than Tomb Raiders also as they target the shooter base. Tomb Raider will also more than likely get bundled for Black Friday or have a ACU/AC4 type bundle which will increase it's #'s.

That's assuming it wins many Game of the Year awards in a year against Batman Arkham Knight, Bloodborne, Witcher 3 and Fallout 4. It will likely just be a Remix Edition or PlayStation edition with exclusive PS4 content to make up for the delay. I don't think it'll be at $40 as none of their remastered or Type 0 were, however that would be the logical thing to do.

Best wishes.

But with a whole year delay, by the time it comes out on PS4, it will be probably discounted on Steam, and perhaps even a Games for Gold on XB1 even.

It will feel -very- stale, and coming during a season of big new AAAs and when the AA exclusives are "expected" to start rolling out on PS4.

It's a mind boggling move either way.

What I think it means is that there was a very big check for unlimited licences so that they could bundle it (probably alongside Tomb Raider Remaster) in a $299 package during the Holidays and make sure they could go through the stocks during the next year or so with the words "Only on Xbox" or an equivalent.

Probably similar to what happened to ACU, but Crystal Dynamics went quite a bit farther this time around than Ubi.

What if Sony had a conversation with them about adding a little extra?

Square will release this for $60 just as TR DE. Its just what they do.

Why would Sony care about exclusive content? They might just sit back and watch this franchise crash in the face of Uncharted.

Remember Square were the ones who cried commercial failure when TR sold over 3m copies the first time around.

Uh so this will go up in a post Uncharted 4 time on PS4 next year, that won't be good for sales especially considering it'll be $60 for a game that came out a year ago which would already lead to lower sales (yea I know not on the same platform but still). The separate date for PC also doesn't make sense.

And, yea, this isn't the worst thing in the world because I'd be perfectly fine with waiting until next year also if I didn't have or wanted an Xbox One. If Persona 5 were ever announced for the Xbox One, I'd wait my ass off. As of now, it's the reason I will pick up a PS4. The next Uncharted use to be my biggest reason, and it's still a very big motivation, but Persona 5... I need that real bad.

Selling *better* doesn't mean it didn't sell at all on the other platform. Businesses don't ignore that sort of thing. It still sold decently on the 360.

Some of y'all *really* hoping FFVII doesn't come to XB1 huh? lol

Name those people who are hoping that FFVII won't come to the XBO. Last time I checked, being realistic about the possibility of an XBO version is not the same as hoping it won't come.

The XBO isn't the 360. Last gen, MS gave a massive JRPG push early in the 360's lifecycle. We are not seeing such a thing this time around, thus preventing growth of the JRPG fanbase on the XBO.

This

Instead we keep getting the same fucking ips, where is this gens new gears or halo in terms of AAA backing. I realise these ips are difficult to make and get success but damn, everyone was talking about backwards compatibility being the best MS E3 announcement, for me it was Recore
