So it's more constructive to talk about how stupid or not stupid they are without knowing how much Microsoft paid them? Maybe Microsoft even forfeited the license fees on top of paying them a good sum.

Man, if by license fees you are referring to the 30% that platform holders get on every game Microsoft is crazy and SQ is laughing their way to the bank.

There's 0 possibility that MS will gain nothing on each game sold. This way the only positive side of this deal would be the mindshare generated and additional consoles sold.

And i don't think TR will sell this much consoles to even consider something like this.

Uh so this will go up against Uncharted 4 on PS4 next year, that won't be good for sales especially considering it'll be $60 for a game that came out a year ago which would already lead to lower sales (yea I know not on the same platform but still). The separate date for PC also doesn't make sense.

U4 is scheduled for next Spring. Next Holiday will probably put it around Horizon, GT7 and possibly Square's own FFXV.

So, even if every owner of the Xbox One buy the game on Japan, then it won't sell more than a niche Vita game there. What a move from the japanese Square.Enix.

This

Instead we keep getting the same fucking ips, where is this gens new gears or halo in terms of AAA backing. I realise these ips are difficult to make and get success but damn, everyone was talking about backwards compatibility being the best MS E3 announcement, for me it was Recore

So Quantum Break, Scalebound, Sea of Thieves, ReCore (which you mentioned), Ori, Sunset Overdrive, etc. don't count I guess? Yep same old ip's.

In a twisted way, if the game wasn't timed exclusive, it wouldn't get nearly the same amount of attention as its getting right now.

Maybe this truly is what Square Enix have been hoping for.

Square will release this for $60 just as TR DE. Its just what they do.

Why would Sony care about exclusive content? They might just sit back and watch this franchise crash in the face of Uncharted.

Remember Square were the ones who cried commercial failure when TR sold over 3m copies the first time around.

Hasn't Sony always cared about Tomb Raider?
Also, A 3rd party, and histrically one of Sony's most important is not a competitor. Every dollar SE makes on Tomb Raider on a PS platform is money for Sony as well.

How do we even know the year delay is because of Microsoft? A 6 month delay would have this releasing around the time of Uncharted 4. If I was Square, I wouldn't want it releasing anywhere near Uncharted.

Who will buy a game a whole year after it came out?

/looks at all hd ports announced

Me, buying (well, being gifted) GTA V on PC and playing it for the first time. So that is like over 1 and half years since it originally released. It's hardly an issue when so many other fantastic games to play in the iterim

A year late it better fucking be like $30, otherwise screw that game. There will be zero excitement for the game at that point, and I'm definitely not paying full price for some year-old dusty game.

Well there are prescedents for good port sales of games that are 1 year old...

TLOUR sold great [with greatly enhanced visuals and tons of good DLC bundled in] for $50, and GTAV sold great because of insane hype and lots of new gameplay/visual upgrades [most notably FPS mode]

... but RotTR will have much harder time to attract fans to high price point. Base game will be 1:1 port from Xboen without much [or any] visual enhancements, and I don't believe Eidos will produce a lot of good DLC content. During busy holiday season, gamers will see that as a "old game".

I bought Sunset Overdrive, brilliant game. Ridiculous release date put upon it.

I won't disagree with you there on the release date, but it is a new IP they invested money into.

Sony have tried new IP also with The Order, Driveclub, Knack and Bloodborne (if you count it as a new IP, I know that's a heated discussion on GAF).

New IP are very hard to launch and become big. Games the size of Uncharted, Gears, Halo and Last of Us are very rare and very hard to achieve.

I'm talking about giving the Halos and Forzas a rest for a while, give new IP a chance and really back it with the funding and advertising Halo gets. When Halo 5 releases we would of already had three Halo releases on Xbox One, I mean come on

Yea, that platform fee is what I meant. We don't know exactly how much Microsoft is paying Square Enix, maybe it's enough so SE can deal with a one year late PS4 version and a fraction of the sales. They are also likely to have a bundle, so if all else was normal, Microsoft would normally have to pay SE for the game for however many bundles sold, right? Maybe they forfeited those platform fees. We don't know, it's all speculation, and thus pointless.

I agree with you dude, it's difficult but every year it seems a lot of it is so predictable, not just MS I should say, industry as a whole

What a waste of money from Microsoft why couldn't they have invested it in a new ip ?

Its a quick easy win for holiday 2015 that nicely fills a gap in their portfolio. They only seem to care about holiday season sales.

I do agree, this money should ideally go to new/dead/dying franchises instead. Sony have taken a lot of risks and the payback has been enormous. I hope Quantum Break turns out to be a hit so MS feels easier investing in new IP

Imagine of MS had come out at E3 saying they had fully funded Shenmue 3/Final Fantasy 7, Virtua Fighter 6 or something else we never thought we'd see?

Cool, this game looks great. Obviously I'd like to play it sooner but confirmation of a PS4 release with a soft date attached is great to hear.

Why would they stop making Halo and Gears of War? Those things sell, people still want them, and they can have new IP's on top of them. I have no idea why Sony plans to end Uncharted, a lot of people would definitely buy more.

I don't think Sony has plans to end Uncharted. Naughty Dog are going to move on, but I doubt the franchise is going anywhere.

Well, I hope MS got a refund.

Why? A year is a long ass time and Uncharted will have come and gone by then. A year is more than long enough to affect perception and sales. Look at Bioshock and Lost Planet. Weren't they both a year later last gen?

I'm not saying stop making them, just give them a break for two or three years and really push the new IP

I recall another Xbone timed exclusive that bombed as a late release on the PS4 last year
I think that depends on definition of a bomb - PS4 version of PVZ:GW was given away on PSN, so inevitably that would ruin the retail chances it had (the fact that game is basically a F2P that they charge for on other platforms(not unlike the original PvZ) is just an insult to the people that did buy it - but I guess that's just how EA rolls).

Because Savage Starlight is coming!

Well, I hope it is. I don't think the UC series will end as such, but we'll follow different characters away from, and unrelated to, Drake and co. I reckon.

Other than Gears next year will be a big focus on new IP for MS (and probably Forza Horizon's 2) so your wish is granted :)

Probably Crackdown also, but I won't count that since those come very rarely.

So if the reason it's 1 year and not 6 months is, that Square is moving away from Uncharted 4, did they admit that TR is basically an Uncharted copy ?

half-joking here.

Tomb raider made its home on the original PSone in its heyday as it was the go-to system and it 'accidentally' became associated with PS.' It lost its magic on later systems before the reboot. In any case, its a decent franchise but not a system seller. It competes directly with Uncharted and that game will have non-PS4 owners lining up to buy the PS4 console just play the game - that in itself will Increase the userbase and increase the sales of every other title on the machine.

All im saying is that Sony have a much smaller stake in the success of TR than Uncharted.

Halo hasn't had a mainline game since 2012. They made some twin-stick mobile games, ported the others to Xbox in MCC.

Gears got Judgment which whilst I liked more than others was a bit of a misstep, but it was over 2 years ago and Gears 4 isn't out until Holiday 16.

Microsoft have released plenty of new IP in the last couple of years; Ryse, SO (both of which got big marketing pushes), Ori, Screamride, State of Decay (which sold over 2m before it came to Xbox One and a sequel is incoming), theres been some other smaller stuff

They also have Quantum Break, Scalebound, Sea of Thieves and ReCore coming, I don't think Microsoft lack new IPs or don't push the ones they do make. Im sure next year especially will be big on that front given they have so many.

You don't rest your biggest franchises, no-one else does it why would Microsoft?

In a twisted way, if the game wasn't timed exclusive, it wouldn't get nearly the same amount of attention as its getting right now.

Maybe this truly is what Square Enix have been hoping for.

I doubt it, simply because few people are actually talking about the GAME itself; they're just talking about the business deals BEHIND the game.

And, even then, most of the talk is complaints, criticisms, and disgruntled fans.

I know there's the saying there's no such thing as bad publicity, but at the same time, I don't imagine angering half your core fanbase is a cause for celebration, no matter how many dollar bills MS slipped them under the table.

As a Tomb Raider fan with an Xbox One who is STILL going to wait for the (probably) better PS4 version, most conversations rarely actual have talked about the game itself.

I may pick up the PC version. I have a XBone, but I am not in a hurry... I am also not a fan of this kind of stuff. I doubt the game will be good enough to want to double dip on PS4

Yes I think it might have been PVZ. In fact, EA had a one day sale giving it away for free to any PS4 owner - that's where I picked mine up. I never paid a penny in any DLC. Its a great game. I guess they gave it away because it is online only and perhaps the PS4 community was too small.

Yep, definitely an insult to those who 'bought' it but that's EA for ya.
