If anything it'd make more sense to try to ride the genre hype and launch a month later. I agree with you, I don't buy the notion that this is launching in the Fall to avoid Uncharted 4 when there's plenty of dry months in the summer to drop ports and remasters without much friction.

Because people on the Internet are inconsiderate. Can we really go a whole year without some inconsiderate idiot posting unmarked spoilers in some random gaf thread?

From what I've seen, the answer is no. So a year old game at (probably) full price and you already know how it ends. Bit of a tough sale, wouldn't you say?

I don't know, I guess I don't feel the need to have the absolute newest game these days except in very specific instances (like a multiplayer centric game where the community size is important, or something like a Souls game where it's fun to discover the game at the same time as others)

I would like to think the general public is more informed. I mean sure if it was a time exclusive new IP but Tomb Raider? It's been around for 15+ years. If you want to play it you'll do your homework. If you never played it before you probably don't care.

Yup. It's one hell of a short-sighted choice. Even moreso with the fanbase for the franchise being strongly Playstation and PC.

Having a large budget does not mean not caring for profitability.

For Phantom Dust they probably knew that if they spent much on the game they are not going to recoup it, so they need to keep the budget tight.

Of course they make choices, but they are continuously investing in new games, so I doubt having an exclusivity deal are actually taking money from other projects. And honestly I do think the deal paid off. They now have a very strong and diverse fall lineup, including this game which caters to Europe, a market they are trying to gain market share.

Eh, sure. It's a deal that benefits Microsoft more than anyone else, which is why I think it's bizarre that Square Enix agreed to it. It doesn't really benefit Square Enix, Tomb Raider, or the players much at all.

... But the game is still coming out on the same day as Fallout 4 and the Xbox will have plenty of OTHER big titles coming out this Holiday that I fully believe will cannibalize a lot of Tomb Raider's sales. I know if I was Microsoft, I'd push bundles and promotions for Halo 5, Fable Legends, Gears of War Remaster, or RARE Revival over Rise of the Tomb Raider.

It reminds me of when Nintendo assumed Resident Evil fans would snatch up Gamecube's for exclusive Resident Evil games... and those ended up being some of the worst-selling games in the series, despite being some of the best. Capcom eventually sighed and realized the deal wasn't benefiting them or their players, and when the PS2 version of RE4 came out (10 months later), it outsold the Gamecube version, despite being technically inferior.

Feels very much like watching history repeat itself.

Yeah, for a story driven game if you've been spoiled I can see why you'd be soured. But you know... in this day and age if you're not careful you can be spoiled before a game even releases!

But at the same time, it's not like you will always be spoiled playing a game or watching a movie well after release. I haven't played KOTOR for instance, and although I know there's a twist I have no idea what it is.
 
If Rise of the Tomb Raider is a good game it will sell well on all platforms, even a year later. If it's a bad game it will never do well, exclusive deal or not.

how it ends? hell, thanks to youtube, there'll be hundreds of complete playthroughs available. good luck to anyone but the hardest of hardcore tr fan resisting all of that for a year :) ...

Win 10 exclusive is total horseshit. Maybe some of us are logical gamers, you know the type that arent jumping on board a new OS any time soon cause the fuckton of compatibility issues that always pop up the first year of an OS launch.

i don't remember the last time i had anything spoiled for me in the last 5 years, in person or on the internet.

This is kind of specious. I don't know a damn thing about what happens in the first Tomb Raider reboot game and it's been out three years now. Even stuff like Bloodborne and MGSV, entries in franchises I really care about, it hasn't been terribly hard to stay in the dark.
 
Kinda works out better for playstation players, no? They get uncharted 4 early 2016 then if people want another uncharted-like game they can get tomb raider in the holidays. I dont care for these types of games though so fallout 4 for and dark souls 3 for me.
 
Well by then PS4 users will have the option to play Uncharted 4, which will be a much better game anyway, like the previous games (imo).

But for those who only have a PS4 and love Tomb Raider, at least they will be able to play it, eventually.

Yeah, I assume they mean the windows 10 store. I guess crazier things have happened but I couldn't see Valve letting them throw this up there with the caveat that you need w10 to run it.

It's not a dx12 game.

Arguably, that's the riskiest thing with this deal, PS4/PC owners have enough time to see wether the game is either amazing, meh or shit so would-be day one purchasers might actually pass on the game if it's anything less than great and there's loads of other options for better quality games.
 
Very happy to see that the PC version is coming that early. Definitely going to get that as planned.

As far as PS4, I wasn't expecting it to release that late. The nice thing about it is that hopefully any DLC will be included in it. It'll also be able to have more development time, so that could possibly take advantage of the PS4's hardware advantage over Xbone. It was crazy how much better the PS4 definitive edition of Tomb Raider was over the Xbone version.

your self-control's admirable. not everyone's is. people spoiling a game for themselves, particularly one they're curious about that people are talking/writing about, but that they won't be able to play for a year, i'd say is far from 'specious'...
 
What a shitty exclusive deal that they negotiated lmao. They didn't even make it to release without the more popular systems getting full confirmations and timeframes. Hope it meets expectations to get a non-cross gen sequel next time
 
If its a decent enough game it'll sell on the PS4 regardless of the delay.

I'll be getting it - I enjoyed the reboot, and even if this matches it, I'll enjoy it too.

Plenty of other games between now and then to entertain me.
 
Meh looks pretty standard deal to me. Both Sony and Microsoft makes shitty deals that will piss off the other half. I have started to live with that.

Yup. And I have been before, but it's a lot easier to have something spoiled once (potentially) millions of people have got their hands on it.

I'm able to control myself and avoid intentionally. I'm just worried about those who think it's fair game to post uncensored spoilers in random places.

Someone on gaf posted a pretty big spoiler of Arkham knight's ending less than eight days after release. Uncensored of course. But that was in an Arkham series thread. Not good enough? Someone posted the Alien:Isolation ending in a random gaf thread shortly after release. Uncensored, of course. And then there was a recent TLOU thread with a title that would certainly spoil any impact the ending could possibly have if you haven't played it. Thankfully, the mods took care of that quickly. And speaking of the last of us, the ending was all over the net before it released. I learned a big lesson about avoiding comments sections on website like ign that day.

And it's not a game, but on another forum (one that quite a few gaffers also post at), someone posted a huge "The dark knight rises" spoiler the day the movie released. When I called them an asshole for it, they gave the "I'm on my phone and can't use spoiler tags" excuse. Which is bullshit, because you can post spoiler tags on phones. And besides, is your opinion on such a key scene so important that you can openly spoil it for the rest of us?

Point being, there are plenty of people out there who are either completely inconsiderate, or just too damn stupid and post open spoilers.

First how it was announced with them skirting around their wording with exclusivity.

Then by setting a release date on the same day as Fallout and sandwiched between the heavy hitters Battlefield, COD, and Assassins Creed.

Then instead of releasing it in late summer in July or August on PS4 where they would likely be able to capitalize on some slow release months they decide to bury the PS4 release in next years holiday schedule. Not sure how a year old game selling at $60 dollars among the holiday releases is going to move the sales figures.

Had hoped to play it on ps4 but im not going to wait that long. Will likely rent it for Xbox as i cant justify paying the $60 this holiday given the other games releasing.

Pretty much this. This whole RoTTR drama has left a poor taste. I'll probably get it when it releases next year on PS4 because I really enjoyed the last TR game...but damn idk what SE has been thinking.
