He means the huge threads of backslash against Sony because of the supposed "shady" deal. Sony is not immune in this forum, contrary to what you suggest. (Although those threads were incredibly stupid..).

I thank god I didn't see those threads then because that makes no sense. Shenmue III's release is almost within the realm of a fairy tale. It was that highly improbable to happen, and regardless of how it's coming about, it seems like Sony had a major role to play. The kickstarter campaign seems strange for something so huge, and perhaps it hints at some doubt on Sony's part, but all that matters is that it's happening. Will it be the mega budget Shenmue III we would've all hoped for? Maybe not, but the damn thing is happening. I'll settle for that.

What the?

How the heck is that a benefit other than fanboy biullet points?

If you already own or plan to own the system that this game is coming out on first, then that doesn't just simply make it a fanboy bullet point, although it can certainly be used that way also. For people looking forward to the game and already have or plan to get an xbox one before the holidays, the game coming to Xbox One before any other current gen system is indeed a benefit. How it could not be seen that way baffles me. It may not be a benefit that everyone agrees is a benefit, but it's largely held as a nice benefit.

It benefits Xbox owners in a way as they get to play the game earlier than other platform owners, but that's really all I'm seeing.

They're getting to play it at the same time that they would have gotten it regardless. The only difference is others now have to wait. If that's true then you have to lool at it like no gamers really get anything unless it's X1 owners who want to hang it over PS4 owners heads.

Instead of waiting for TGS, I hope they surprise us at Paris.

TGS is before Paris by quite a bit.

We might hear more about P5 in August. We will probably hear firm release date + the actual start of marketing blitz at TGS, likely in a Sony pre-show. Which I believe last year was early September.

Also making the prediction it will be a simultaneous release in December.

The thing with this deal is that it does not hurt or benefit XBox gamers in any way shape or form.

It does benefit. The game can be developed entire just for the XB1 (another team porting to X360). Then port to PC next year, and PS4 later. So it can be almost like a third party exclusive.

The thing with this deal is that it does not hurt or benefit XBox gamers in any way shape or form. MSFT's reasoning for not having an Uncharted is a bullshit excuse, because without the deal, they still have their "Uncharted".

It only effects PS4 owners (which also happens to be the largest console fan base) in a negative way. Only benefit would be more people who are Tomb Raider fans will be hoping on the Uncharted Collection/4 train now if they didn't previously.

If I am not mistaken this deal was struck before the Uncharted 4 delay was announced. And for the holiday season if consumers can say to themselves "I can get the xbox that has tomb raider, or I can get the PS4 that has tomb raider and uncharted 4"that would be bad? I guess would be Phil's reasoning. The delay kinda made that a moot point but the deal had already been done.

RoTR coming out a year later for ps4, Killer Instincts coming to PC, Don't give a shit about Halo. What reason do I have to get a XBONE again?

my thoughts exactly

the PS4 version of RoTR will probably have all the DLC anyways and more content depending on how mediocre the reviews are

I for one, am glad I won't have to pay $60 for this when it comes to PS4.

It will be great getting this for $19.95 for the Definitive Edition, with all DLC and enhanced bicycle physics.

I have 4 bans. I better step out of this thread before I say something that gets me my 5th.

I hope so. I'm not feeling Fallout 4 so Persona 5 would fit in perfectly for my winter RPG.

In context of the quoted poster those games are niche and probably wouldn't have anywhere near the market potential on X1. But that doesn't mean that TR is the literal only game this gen that S-E would be willing to do a deal for. Big bags of money for a game with western appeal could easily happen again. Fuck me if I know what that game is, I just think PS getting games that will sell well doesn't stop MS from tossing money around on games with broader (or western) appeal.
Question becomes now. Are pub/dev willing to delay the PS4 version for $$? Delaying the PS4 version will most likely damage the franchise/brand since the PS4 is pretty much leading 1.5/2? To 1 compare to the ONE. New IP, I see happening but not known franchise. Exclusive marketing deal will happened for MS but it doesn't seem to be helping....looking at AC, BF, and The Witcher for example.

That's how I feel too. Already have a PC and a ps4. MS giving me basically no reason to even want one for cheap. Really couldn't give less of a shit about halo and gears in 2015.

Forza 6 looks cool though.

Yeah, by blocking PC and PS4 players to get it on same day like Xbox playes is benefits. It's shit deal just like DLC Deal Sony/MS made
I don't necessarily agree with the deal myself, and I agree that It's not a benefit for everyone of course. I wasn't expecting the delay to be this long tbh.

Sunset Overdrive? Forza? ReCore? Quantum Break? Scalebound? Crackdown? Gears 4? Rare Replay if you're nostalgic? Plus I'm sure there'll be more we hear about at Gamescom. Plenty there when combined with Xbox/PC exclusives along with standard 3rd party fare.

Yes it was a different kind of "criticism" but senjutsu likes to point out the Sony bias in this site and pretends that they can get away with anything here. Clearly not the case (the shenmue backslash was not even warranted).

Oh. Well yeah, I'm not trying to dig into fanboy stuff. Only saying that if we have monthly threads celebrating the sales of video games and Sony is in the lead by 2:1 then naturally that would show in places like gamimg forums. They don't get the same amount of negativity for 2 reasons.1) Sony didn't shit the bed from the start. And somewhat because of that 2) they have a sizeable lead. Oh, bonus! 3) They have the better hardware all around this gen. So MS gets shitted on regularly but I understand why. If you were a diehard Xbox fan it may seem unfair but as a dude who doesn't give a shit and only wants to play some dope games the reason is obvious. Sony is kicking ass and it translates to the court of public opinion.

In my opinion it's probably not worth it unless the game showed huge potential in the west (mostly here in the US) and the check was crazy. But I can't speak for pubs, they do wild shit all the time. Always have, always will.

LOL! Like they can't do that if launch simultaneously. At worst they can hire another studio to do PC/PS4 ports. And it's not like TR2 is visual marvel or anything.

Will get this on PC next year during one of the quieter months then if it's any good.

Too many other games coming out at the end of this year.

Seeing someone talk positive about Xbox hurts you so much?

Of course not. The question is if there's any benefit for Xbox owners with this exclusivity deal. I replied that it depends on how it's viewed. Maybe they're getting it early, maybe everyone else is being forced to wait. I dunno, that's up to interpretation. Same could be said for deals like Street Fighter V, and Xbox owners have every right to be frustrated. Having exclusivity of any kind sucks for the owners of platforms that are getting left out.

The Know guys said it will be GOTY edition (all DLCs included) sold at $40 (PS4 version).

I still think the game will bomb at that price. No one will give a shit about about a 1 year old port in one of the busiest months of the year (November).

All paid for exclusives are a shitty deal. Timed, full, lifetime, help us make a sequel to a popular franchise, help up fund this new IP, console only... Etc. This shit blows. I get it, it's just annoying as hell.

There's nuance to it. I have no problem with indie/small devs signing deals, everything costs money and console manufacturers probably give then a better deal than a 3rd party or a bank.

The problem is bigger titles like SFighter and TRaider which are not done out of necessity to fund the release of the game. But are done in executive boardrooms as a book balancing exercise. For instance, tomb raider releasing at three different times across three different platforms probably costs more accounting for all variables. But a $5 million cheque on the books from MS right now looks good at the next financial meeting.

Eh, there's a lot at stake here. With budgets being as high as they are, I understand why stuffy suit types make these kinds of decisions. As much as I might like it, I think it's easy to get that the stakes are too high to greenlight passion projects and conclude that the only goal is to deliver a product that makes people happy. Forget specific games for instance. These are situations where one colossal failure could be the death of the studio. Guaranteed money from one platform holder may seem like a safer move than assuming that sales on another platform would have more than made up for declining that moneyhat.

Doesn't mean that we have to like it, but I understand why these deals are made. Speaking on Street Fighter V, Ono had been talking for a while that he didn't have the budget to move forward on a proper sequel. Do I think that this was an indication that Capcom did not have the cash to fund it themselves? Absolutely not. I think that game could have turned a profit without Sony stepping in. But I also absolutely believe that the beancounters at Capcom weren't convinced that it could turn enough of a profit or that it couldn't do so quickly enough to make it worth their while right now.

Publishers are cautious. Platform holders need to invest in content that differentiates them from the competition. These kinds of deals often seem like a win-win to everyone except the fans. But even then, I prefer to see these things as necessary evils rather than get fired up about it. But that's just me.

Where did they say that?

Yeah, that's why my post says "I get it", again it's just annoying. I could have played Titanfall (PC) i can play SF:V (PS4 or PC, probably PC) and can play TR in the Spring (PC). It's just annoying having to own multiple consoles but fuck it, I guess I'm used to it. Still sucks though, lol.

Totally agree on indies, those guys/gals should get their money however they can. It's a very rough business.

Here's the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cpNad06k14M. They didn't say it's GOTY edition, no idea where I get that from :/, so I'm sorry for misremembering that part.

Their source said that the PS4 version would be announced in 2016, and well here we are. However it did get the PC and PS4 release windows right.

That did pass a common sense check I guess. Who's going to release a year late port for $60?

The Know has grown up so fast. Already getting legitimate leaks.

What an utter waste of money on Microsofts part.

Maybe, just MAYBE, use that money to - oh I don't know - create some actual exclusives that are worthwhile for your own platform?

This seriously boggles my brain. I just hope one day we find out how much money Microsoft ponied up to Square for this part time exclusive deal...

Yeah I have to wonder how much money they spent, PS4 fans who want to play Tomb Raider can just play the Uncharted Collection and then Uncharted 4 while waiting for this game. I can't imagine this exclusivity is going to sell a ton of Xboxes.

I think that Rise of the Tomb Raider is going to bomb on both consoles. Will bomb on PS4 as the majority will have either played it already or simply lost interest in it. Will bomb on Xbox One simply because it releases on the same day as Fallout 4 and I seriously doubt that fans of both games are going to pick Raider over F4. F4 has a huge fanbase and that fanbase have been waiting for years and years and went nuts at E3 during Betheseda's press conference. Add in Halo 5, Battlefront, COD and even Uncharted collection and Raider is going to bomb regardless of reviews and scores. It's simply too packed.

In short - the real winner is Square Enix who got a huge lump sum of cash upfront and whatever it sells on PS4 is basically just a bonus.

The real loser is Microsoft because to pay so much money for a timed exclusive only to have it lose to a third party game in Fallout 4 at launch.

Of course, this is just my own personal opinion. I'm a fan of Tomb Raider but jeez, it's in a horrible situation. And if this game does bomb, im truly going to feel sorry for Crystal Dynamics who you know will get blamed for it.

You guys figured it out. You guys have beaten a whole group of marketing analysts on the "Is ROTR timed exclusivity purchase worthwhile for Xbox?" topic.

Scalebound, ReCore, Sea of Thieves, Quantum Break. More to be shown.

Want more? Actually, fuck that, wouldn't want to turn this into a list thing.

A whole year , don't think ps4 users will be even bothered at that point, I expect it to be an epic flop on ps4 with more modern games selling in that holiday season
