Street Fighter V Roster Discussion: P-P-P-P-PATTERN BREAKER

A rotating roster is legit the worst idea I've ever heard for a fighting game.

Also, if Gem is right and Mika is in, that basically deconfirms Alex and Karin. Too many blondes and Japanese people. Fei Long confirmed?

A rotating roster can only work in a fighting game in the way Killer Instinct has it set up. But that was MS bringing back a dead franchise and experimenting with payment models. Street fighter though has no reason to incorporate a rotating roster.

I'm going to be really bummed out if Cody (see my Username) and Guy don't make it into SFV via DLC at some point. They're like Ryu/Ken but with a twist. I want to see how their friendship progresses in regards to the game's story and how both of their styles adapt to the new game mechanics. I've always believed those two should be on the same level as Ryu, Ken, Chun, Cammy, Bison in that they should be almost mandatory in each game.

I would be legit bummed if they made it because I hate both of them, so at least someone's gonna be happy either way 😁

There won't be a rotating roster, that is asinine.
They have said though that there will be no Super or Ultra versions, so I can very much see characters coming in at points after release as updates.

Always fresh and always exciting.

If she really get in and she is a lot of fun to play with, I think I'm definitely going to use her for easy salts since apparently some people really hate her so much.

As I've said many times before, I was going to use her regardless, but knowing that people for some reason hate her so much will make my victories that much sweeter.

It'll be like when I used to main El Fuerte in the early days of SSFIV, only better because I'll be using a character I actually like.

Heh, like Scrafty, I would play her quite happily even if she didn't generate hate, but people having a dislike of her just makes it funnier if I win :3
I think I mentioned it before, but I fully intend on buying a bag of skittles whenever I go somewhere to play Streetfighter V so I can offer anyone who loses a "taste of the rainbow" as a consolation prize XD

I think this roster is pretty easy to predict because of all the characters that were in 4. What few fan favorites weren't in 4 will most likely be in 5. I feel like Alex, Urien, Karin and R.Mika are pretty much locks. Q and Sean are also favorites but I find their inclusion a little more debatable.

A lot of people seem to be happy with the idea of the 4 you mentioned plus another (usually juri) filling out the remaining 5 slots for returning characters (and I count myself among them :3 ), but the main issue with that is the coloured segments of the character roster on that Capcom slide and what they might mean.
Some think the green means SF2 characters, some think 'returning from SF4', some think 'characters returning from a numbered entry, aka not alpha'. It could mean nothing at all admittedly and Capcom is just messing with us, but who knows?

edit: not sure how valid this is but some peeps online have been saying that Bifu accidentally commented on Rashid on Arturo's stream. He apparently said something to the effect of "you would like Rashid if you liked Fuerte"
I might do some sleuthing to see if I can find this supposed stream, but for now it's just a rumour I found floating on the net.

Creator confirmed lots of times that

Poison and Roxy are Females (Born female etc ...)

SFV ?
We've gone way beyond the original intention though. Poison has changed beyond this, and Nishitani doesn't even work at Capcom or have any say over the character anymore.

As it stands now, she is transgender.

Thing is, the scans of the original concept sketches call her a newhalf, so the claim in those tweets that she was originally conceived as a biological woman doesn't even match up with the physical evidence :/
I think it's been so long, and there's been so much back and forth that there is no way of knowing what the original intention was.

And as I said, it really doesn't matter anymore. Through all the miscommunication and shenanigans we ended up with an awesome transgender character and now that she's become a central part of the roster, I think this is the way she'll stay.

Those tweets are just from a couple weeks ago

the creator goes on and on about the lawsuits in the 90s from various groups and such

The japanese version of the games depicted them as women. I don't know why they chose to go the ambiguous route overseas til recent (running gag?)

I always saw her being a biological woman in the games anyway and if her creator does too

welp

But she was referred to as a newhalf in the japanese version of pretty much EVERY game she's been in. Ya'll really needa let this one go.

He doesn't own the character anymore, and what he's saying doesn't even match the design documents of the original production. I'm not saying it's not possible that he at some point intended Poison to be a biological woman, of course it's possible, but that's not who she is now. She is a transgender woman.

Realistically, I'm pretty sure not very much thought went into her and Roxy at all initially, they were just random enemies, but Poison obviously took on a life of her own and became who she is today. Whether by something that started running joke, or an odd decision to avoid controversy, it all lead to where she is now. Thankfully we can look past the somewhat dubious past and focus on who she is today, a really great character, and a much needed bit of LGBT representation.

Yup. All this is covered in the video I linked via Hour's Left thread, but as usual people don't watch it because they'd rather just go with whatever supports what they wanted instead of, I dunno, doing some research :/

I don't think the idea of a rotating roster will work with SF5, but lets take this point into consideration. The sweet spot for fighting game roster size is around twenty characters. In a four month window most skilled players could peak skill wise with a small roster of twenty or so fighters. If the roster rotated 4 characters out every four months it would essentially feel like we got 3 separate games a year. You keep the game fresh and noob friendlier.

Might work in MK XI...

Well, I knew the game's roster was shaping up too well. It was missing a character that I hate with every fiber of my being.

Heh, well I wouldn't put too much stock in that rumour for now. It's just something floating about. It was mentioned about 2 hours ago so i'm watching the newest archived stream on Arturo's twitch (nycfurby) which is timestamped about 3 hours ago to see if I can find it... but it's 4 hours long -.- Not sure if archives are stamped by when they were broadcast or when they were archived. If it's broadcast based then hopefully i should only have to listen through the first hour.

edit: I swear to heck, about a third of this first guy's commentary is just him perving about the girls in the bar :/

... what makes you think this "evidence" predates the decision referenced in that interview? Or if it does, that it wasn't one of numerous concepts? It's an image with fan-assumed context vs first hand accounts. It does not carry higher authority.

When the decision referenced in that interview says "the complaints were from AFTER the game was already released" and the complaints were the reason they 'changed' her to a newhalf versus concept art, manuals and promotional materials from Japan that all called her a newhalf before the american thing and in the case of concepts before the games release then colour me doubtful unless Capcom has a hidden time machine :P

edit: oh heck. I just realised that if the video is 4 hours long and it said it was posted 3 hours ago back when I checked it, the stream I'm scrubbing through for this Rachid mention is probably timestamped based on archive time rather than broadcast time (a 4 hour long broadcast can't have started 3 hours ago after all :3 ) so there goes any hope of it just being in the first hour or two -.-

I would like to see Rose, but will not die if she is not in at the beginning since I have started playing Cammy in IV and V.
I figure that she will show up sooner or later.

Ok, I give up on trying to find this Rachid slip up thing by Bifu on nycfurby's stream. I had a listen but I was only doing it with a half ear as I was doing other stuff so it's entirely possible i missed it, if it's actually in there. Sorry folks but 4 and a half hours is too much for me to really do a detailed inspection of :P

Well with our blonde quotient filled and Necalli, Ryu, and Chun-Li taking up all available brunette slots, I guess that means our remaining slots are Urien/Elena (Bison already has a slot, only room for one more with white hair), C. Viper and Akuma for red, Dhalaim for bald, and Hakan for turquoise.

What's with all the blonde complaints? Is it because the roster consists of 16 characters?
Arcade ver. of SFA3 had 8 playable characters with blonde hair making up like what 1/3 of the cast.

Well to be fair, we already have Ken, Nash, Birdie and Cammy filling a quarter of the initial roster. Alex, Karin, and Mika would make it one short of half.

Presuming of course they kept them blondes.

The problem here is that you are comparing this with the initial roster line up The game will have more characters, so that'd quickly make the % of blondes in the game less even if they add more blonde haired characters.

Really let's focus less on their hair, and more on their animation and how that character would play :P

Don't get me wrong, I am in complete agreement that playstyle is a more important differentiating factor. I just understand the logic of those who object, I guess?

Poison's got a shoto base for her moveset as well - with Akuma likely to be early DLC, I doubt they'd want to try and differentiate a 4th member of the archetype.

Nah, she won't. Poison has always been a throwaway type of character that just has a vocal minority that like her. Her inclusion in SFxT and Ultra is as close as "throwing a bone" Capcom has gone in having her in a fighting game since the Final Fight one and it was an awesome easter egg. Now, we're moving on to a new game and all of these older characters have had their time in the sun. Time to move on.

EDIT: My bad. I thought you were referring to her getting into SFV.

I really found it amusing. It really reminded me of Smash Discussion where people were complaining that we have too many blue-haired sword fighters.

Personally I don't want anyone who made it in the past year or so to SF4... Give me new characters that have not made the 3d jump yet...

But it's like the only game she's really in. I think it would be cool to have her in, they could reinvent her. Plus, having a transgender character on the roster would definitely add some diversity .

USF4 isn't going anywhere any time soon. It's on PS4 alongside SFV, so avoiding a ton of roster overlap is really important.

One of the problems with roster overlap as an argument is that SF4 pretty much included the cream of the crop. Most any one who's any one in the SF universe is in 4. The characters that didn't make it.. I have a hard time believing any of them are actually all that well liked outside of their niche audiences, i.e, people who really liked 3s, for example. Sure 3s is somewhat popular on a few fighting game messages boards but that's really the extent of it.

The most called for characters I've seen across the Web are Alex and Karin. And I think both should make the cut. But there really isn't an outcry for many of the others. Why have Remmy when you could have Guile, who is iconic, even to people who only casually know street fighter.

I know they are going to mix things up, and a new game is the best time to introduce new characters, but I don't think Capcom is going to go full ham with a bunch of lesser known characters. They want the game to sell after all. I could see down the road, more less known characters getting added.

I already have Ryu and Cammy. So personally, I'm more or less set. I'd like Poison, Akuma, Guile, and Vega as well, but they're really just icing on the cake ultimately. I also think Poison is an easy add because of her transgender status. It brings attention to the game in a way other characters don't.

Hope we get a new trailer within the next 2 weeks at the earliest.
