Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

When I try to search files just by typing it in I only get live results for anything in my user folder. If I want to get search results for anything else that has been indexed, I have to click the "my stuff" button first. Is this normal or is my installation broken?

It's annoying me because 7 and 8 had find as you type for all indexed folders.

Could anybody confirm this for me please? I'm not sure if it's a bug or a 'feature'.

It does seem to take some time for indexing, but it isn't normal for me.

I have some problems with my PC.

Live tiles not working, game icons look weird.

These are doing this for me too but I thought that was just the way it was going to be now.

My icons on my task bar are small too, which is slightly annoying.

Yesss...... This is my teenage dreams come true. Finally Cortana will call me by my name.

Tonight's going to be a good night.

I still find it hilarious that Microsoft named their Digital Assistant (that also gathers data and stores it across devices) after an AI who had a finite lifespan, killing herself as she gathered increasing amounts of data until she became an unstable program that effectively crashed to her death. Nothing ominous about that!

Right click taskbar > properties > uncheck 'use small taskbar buttons' ?

Unless I'm misunderstanding lol.

Not a fan of these white borders? headers? and the size of them. I don't really want to fool around with the registry, despite it being an easy fix. Especially with auto updates that I have no real control over, I'm worried something might end up breaking.

they're smaller without checking use small taskbar buttons

(I like it this way)

open up the alarms and clocks app

on world clock, right click the clock you want and choose pin to start
Kinda small, but eh, will have to do for now.

Also OblyTile doesn't seem to work (expected, but still...)

So how do Windows tablet owners go about installing Windows 10? It looks like a pretty crummy experience for desktop/laptop peeps.

I asked this earlier and got no response. Is anyone having issues with their monitor not going into sleep mode at the desired time set in power options? I had no problems with this in 8.1 with my monitor going into sleep mode. Doesn't seem to be working for me in Windows 10. I even tried to set a screensaver to start with 1 minute of idle time and it isn't working. This happened on an upgrade install and a fresh install.

Tried installing from the Media Creation Tool. It does everything up to the "Copying Temporary Files," but then quits with no error code.

Absolutely loving Windows 10, bar the stupid personalised ad and data logging stuff you have to opt out of.

What's some of the best live tiles you can have installed? I like the idea of having them in the start menu, but don't really have much of a use for them yet!

trying to force an update but i keep getting this when I try to upgrade my PC:

Any ideas? The option for creating a bootable USB worked no problem.

Ho do I get the apps to animate, like the email app?

Any good tips and tricks for someone who's new to Win 10 and did almost never touch Win8?

So for people like me who'll want to schedule or just out of courtesy, do we know when windows 10 will be released to the rest of us? Just an estimate?

It's available now if you want it. You don't have to wait for MS to push it to you through Windows Update.

When I tried to upgrade the first time, i didn't have that problem. But I canceled since I wasn't sure if I wanted 10 yet.

Yesterday I got that popup error, bypassed it by turning off Windows Defender/MSE's real time protection. But I don't know if it's the same issue & answer.

i read a few pages back that an OT was coming soon? ive been reading this thread all week and it's now largely troubleshooting. that isnt a bad thing at all, but it's made it a bit difficult to see the positive changes and features of W10 in action.

just curious about the things worth looking forward to.

had a really good experience so far, really clean and fast OS.

one issue though I can't seem to get rid of.
I made a quick video to illustrate the problem.
The screen flashes, and my second monitor in portrait mode rotates back to the 'normal' orientation every time I plug in some devices like a xb1 controller, my phone or other mass storage devices.
it also sometimes happen during gameplay, which is the real annoying part.

anybody seen this or has some suggestions?

So I've been given an older laptop that I've had to run it's recovery partion and flash the PC Back to Win 7. Will I get away with installing Win 10 right away or do I need to go though all the nonsense?

But the pop up is not exactly recommending that I do that, in fact it's an admission things might not yet go smoothly.

Same here, I'm a little hesitant to force the update via the USB boot because I want to do the install on my new SSD. If I try to install there without "upgrading" my Windows 7, Set-up will ask me for an install key which I don't have.

Ok, so I let Windows 10 install the latest nVidia graphics drivers and all has gone well, but I dont seem to have the nVidia Control Panel.

Any idea where that is?

If you don't have it on the right click menu on the desktop, something is amiss.

(3D Vision and SLI even work for me.)

Those don't animate for me either, they just show some text if there's a new email or something. Tiles like News and Weather do animate.

Nope, that oddly makes them even smaller ><

had to import pictures from a memory card today and realised they've replaced the simple import option and now try and force you to use that garbage photos app.

Thankfully you can still get the old thing but it took 15 minutes of googling and reading posts on stackoverflow.

Who approves this shit? my desktop is not a phone. Just stop.

The "Administrative Language" of the system has to be in English (US).

Thanks for the suggestion but disabling MSE didn't work. I'll tinker a little more and see if I can trigger the install.

Stupid question, but asking anyways.

I have a Windows 7 64 bit laptop. If I want to force my laptop to Windows 10, I'll have to download that Windows 10 64 bit file?

Just use the media creation tool. Don't know why people keep trying to trigger the Windows Update upgrade when using the tool is so simple (unless you're unlucky and it fails for you).

Yes.

The installation process looks crummy. Not sure about the OS itself -- I want to try it on my tablet before I switch to using it on the desktop.

The installation was incredibly smooth for me. I just downloaded the tool, let it download the required files, and clicked "Upgrade now". Waited a bit, and it was done. Zero issues whatsoever. Not everyone is so lucky, apparently, but as long as nothing goes wrong it's a completely painless procedure.

?

Plug the USB stick in Windows.

Run setup.exe.
