Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

I just need to know if there are issues with the Xbox 360 controller, because I currently use it to play Mafia II on my HDTV. :)

My 360 (wired) controller works just fine as soon as I plugged it in. Not even a notification to show it was installing drivers. I just did a clean install today. On 8.1 I think I had to put a disc in to get the drivers.

I've tried it out in games to set up control mapping. No issues for me.

Yeah, you do. But you also need to have some form of the drivers installed for gaming performance so once they're in from any source, Windows will update it.

You can also do this..
go to computer management and disable the windows update service

also put this in the registry for good measure
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update] "AUOptions"=dword:00000000
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsUpdate\UX] "IsConvergedUpdateStackEnabled"=dword:00000000
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsUpdate\UX] "DeferUpgrade"=dword:00000001

Just annoying that all this is necessary (and yes when i came home the soundcard driver had reinstalled itself again, lets see if this helps)

My God. I hate whenever this happens which every time I boot my PC. The notification is even left with an item that when you click on it will show nothing.

Yeah, whenever Defender pushes itself it will trigger the fake virus thing.

press win-key + r
type regedit and press enter/ok
navigate to hkey_local_machine\software\policies\microsoft\windows defender
right click in the window to the right and select new > dword
call it DisableAntiSpyware and set its hexadicimal value to 1

close the regedit window and reboot the machine

Will try this one thanks!

If you don't want to wait. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 download that and run it. It'll force the upgrade.

if you need instructions http://venturebeat.com/2015/07/29/h...tall-windows-10-without-using-windows-update/

People keep having problems with the Media Creation Tool method. The following method has had like 0 problems so just do this:

http://neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=173455764&postcount=5540

It's the safest, most reliable way, and the poster is an MS employee. It's basically skipping to the front of the line.

If you are very eager to upgrade, tech savvy users with the above message can modify the following registry key to install immediately.

Warning: Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Before you modify it, back up the registry for restoration in case problems occur.

1.Locate the registry key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\ OSUpgrade]

2.It should exist, but if not, create it.

3.Create a new DWORD (32-bit) Value with Name = "AllowOSUpgrade” (without the quotes), and set the Value = 0x00000001.

Once the registry key is modified, close and reopen the desktop Control Panel, go to Windows Update and check for updates. You should now be able to click the Get Started button to upgrade to Windows 10. Note: Windows 8.1 users must go to the desktop Control Panel, and not the modern Windows Update UI.”

Got it for my tablet. The non tablet mode is pretty decent actually while tablet mode is just that annoying 8.1 menu.

Questions:
-are more folks experiencing the start menu taking a while to load up when you click it?

- is there a swype keyboard of some sort? Having to type everything letter by letter is a pain.

Oh okay. I just read that the mappings of the buttons were all wrong. Like left trigger were right bumper etc. Maybe it was the Xbox One controller then.

Some people have trouble with the tool. For most it works perfectly, and is definitely the smoothest and easiest way to do it. So I'd try that first. If it works for you, you'll be upgraded in no time with practically no effort.

I still can't seem to get the download. At first I thought maybe because I only have 6gb available on the SSD that windows is installed on. So I cleared some space I've got around 17gb of available space and still nothing.

How much space does this damn thing need?

Hey, so I'm having an Activation issue. Well, it's not activated at all.

I upgraded from my Win7 HP laptop of 3 years (which still works pretty well) to Win10 Home. It is a genuine version of Win7 so what could be the issue?

Welp, ran CCleaner and it somehow fucked up displayport for me where I can't change my resolution even after reinstalling the display drivers and it won't show anything during boot until I get to the login screen. Guess it's reset time for me...

I'm pretty disappointed that live tiles haven't improved, in how they function.

On Windows Phone, they're pretty consistent--they update regularly or on a schedule without requiring you to access them.

On Windows 8/8.1, and now 10, it feels like waking up, turning on my SP3, and being greeted by blank live tiles is more common than not. I have a ton of appointments today--why do I not have anything on my Calendar tile?

Live Tiles are definitely messed up on my Surface 3 (but not on my wife's SP3). Among several bugs hear an there, the Weather and News tiles apps which work on start up but then randomly stop after the tablet exits sleep mode (just turning on/off the screen) and restart working 30 mins later.

The mail app is also busted. Tapping/Clicking on a mail pop-up notification sends me to the app but not the actual mail I am unable to switch mail accounts and have to close and restart the app. Another annoying bug is that you have to hit sync after reading emails for them to show up as being read on other devices..as if it was using a pop3 server...

Go to the advanced system settings and then look under the hardware tab. Here you can decide if windows update should install new drivers or not.

Did it to avoid soundcard drivers from via, that wouldnt detect headphone insertion.

(From memory, out and only have my phone here.)

Thanks, I managed to get the right drivers I wanted installed

Is anyone else having issues with the Notification sound not respecting your System Sounds volume level? I prefer to keep my system sounds real low, but the notification chime plays at full blast regardless. Seems like it's the only thing ignoring volume settings.

I made a low volume version of the .wav as a work-around, but it's weird to have to do that.

I am having non-stop hangs with some of my PC games after upgrading to Windows 10.

Really wished I had waited a few months rather than jumping in expecting Microsoft to have done their best to ensure problems like this didnt happen. For a home focused OS they really cant do a good job with QA it seems.

Final decision is on me to upgrade my machine, but fuck me I thought MS would have their shit together by now.

Just give it some time, took a while for me. Manually activating never worked for me, but then after a reboot it had suddenly activated automatically.

Is there a way not to force updates, at least installation?

Look at my previous post
hobblygobbly, unfortunately choosing uninstall will only delay it :-(

it will stop all updates ofc. so you will have to reverse it if you want to update in the future

Where is the option to connect to 5ghz wifi on this OS? It only shows my 2.4.

Or just to manually connect in general.

Type "change adapter settings" in Cortana then hit the first result then click on Change Adapter settings on the left and finally right click on your WiFi controller to modifiy its properties..or simply go to the device manager and find your network controller there.

Ahh there it is, thanks!

Well, after a bunch of issues I was finally able to clean install Windows 10 on my laptop and now it's running as smooth as butter.

I might use Edge as my main browser since I don't use plugins or add-ons.

With that said if I do that I won't be able to update when I want, or can I still check for updates?

With XB1 streaming, what resolution is it dumping to my PC? It seems lower res than I would expect, or does my monitor really suck? Or is it part from column A and part from column B?

I think it dynamically scales the resolution to keep controller latency at a minimum. It probably also has some algorithm that goes "hey, these pixels haven't change in a while, so let's not update those as often". And that leads to the artifacting you see. Digital cable and other streaming services do the same thing, I think.

I originally just did an upgrade from 8.1 and was considering rolling back to it as it was taking much longer to boot up and just slowed to a crawl at times. The computer just went crazy when I tried to transfer some files to USB. I had to reboot it. Menus were lagging and just wasn't a great experience.

Did a clean install today and it's running real smooth. Chrome is still a bit weird. Typing in the address bar isn't working right and sometimes pages aren't rendering correctly. Apart from that it's real smooth and snappy.

Used this as an excuse to throw in an SSD (1tb samsung) so that obviously helps A LOT but I'm definitely gonna stick with 10. Any issues I'm just gonna ride out. I'm staying on 10 now.

After reinstalling windows 7 on my laptop, and updating it for the past day or so, I'm finally downloading 10 on it with the regedit method.

I can't seem to get the regedit method to work. I copy and paste the value into the entry, but I am not allowed to put the 1. I am missing the last digit and can't seem to get it to work.

Right click, MODIFY, enter "1" (sans quotation marks) as the VALUE.

How do I get the new media player to be always on top? Can't see anyhting in the settings.

Although Windows Media Player looks sexy as hell without borders, so maybe I'll keep using that.

There is definitely an issue with sleep in Windows 10. My laptop and desktop keeps going into it after a minute, no matter the settings.

When plugged in, I have the screen to go off after 15 minutes, and the laptop itself to go off after 5 hours.

When on battery, I have set the screen to go off after 5 minutes, and the laptop itself to go off after 10 minutes.

My desktop is set the same as my laptop's plugged in settings.

Here's the weird thing: after rebooting, sleep timers seem to work fine, but after they're triggered, no matter what, the entire laptop and desktop starts sleeping after a minute until a reboot.

I've just been reminded how shit a company MS is. I've been an insider testing Win 10 Enterprise. Since I don't have a VLK I won't receive a free copy of Enterprise. Fine, I didn't know that going in but MS didn't exactly explain this in a very clear way either.

Anyway, today I tried to reset back to my Win 8 by using my recovery partition that came with my laptop. However, this is not possible. I'm getting that the hard drive is locked and refresh cannot be performed. I see from googling that a lot of people has had this problem, but none of the proposed solutions work for me.

Why didn't MS just offer to upgrade us Enterprise insiders to a Home version on the 29th? And why the fuck can I not reset my PC to factory/OEM settings and Win 8 again so that I can then upgrade to Win 10?

Only MS can make something this problematic... Sigh

Cross posting from the other thread:

I've been "trying again later" for a couple days now.
No fixes have worked. I'm can't sign into my MS account on any apps including Xbox. =(

EDIT: It lets me sign into my sister's MS account on the Xbox app. Why?
It seems my PC thinks I'm not using an MS account (even though I am - i have the option to switch to a local account) because I can't use the "sync your settings" tab.
