Rise of the Tomb Raider Syria Demo

It looks great to the point I am skeptical that's running on an XB1. It just looks amazing. If it's legit XB1, then hats off. Either way, can't wait to buy it.

Well, that's a little different.

It's so ridiculous when they use the player getting injured as a plot device to create some drama in a cut scene and then do away with any of the impact of that injury as soon as you regain control of the character.

Just don't do it.

Most character action games still do this. I guess they hope we connect with the character and understand their pain but the disconnect with them going right back to normal is pretty jarring. Instead I feel nothing for the character and just carry on like nothing happened. Ho hum.

I just realised - with all these different locations to visit, is there no more 'metroidvania'-style gameplay? That was the one thing from the previous game that seemed unexpectedly fresh.

I felt this jaded and disappointed when the last game was released, though, but when I bought it a year later in the sale I must admit it was enjoyable enough.

Besides that, not impressed with this demo at all. Nothing but walking, moaning, and QTEs. Doesn't look exciting at all.

Right.

Did we even watch the same video? There was one QTE, the trap around the leg. The rest were just actions. Would you rather there be a cinematic of Lara tearing down the wall when you approached it, or would you rather press a button? Would you rather you press a button near a point of interest, or just see a cinematic when near it? When playing games like Resident Evil and such, would you rather you automatically walk through a door, or press a button to go through? Automatically look for clues or search for them?

I guess you could say there was one more QTE besides the trap. The part where you had to press X to regrab the ledge.

What's wrong with that? Uncharted 4 is more of the same too, and people sure are excited over it.

Except its not. Uncharted 4 looks to have had tremendous focus on its gameplay and level design compared to its predecessors. Both set pieces and moment to moment combat offers plenty of combat options, verticality and sandbox arenas. This TR is focused more on Lara moaning every 2-3 minutes for some reason with QTE fights. The gameplay looks subpar. The other demo seemed encouraging but if I have to put up with these kind of poorly designed set pieces and QTE's and lara moans every few minutes to get to the sandbox stuff then it is a shame.

Someone should tell CD that they dont know how to design set pieces so they should stop trying.

this game and halo 5 are making me really regret buying arkham knight's limited edition, now i has no money to buy these games :/

ah well maybe i can do a gamestop rental

I'm a little disappointed they didn't cut the walk slow loading zones. It's a neat trick but looks even more prominent.

The initial cut scene is weird, like an old bink video cut scene or thunderbirds or Lego movie. It's lacking physical logic or something but the look is realistic.

I hate the Uncharted-ification of this franchise.
I can't even complain, because TR was always sort of full of shit (right from TR2 they felt the need to send you to Venice to kill the mob) but still, it's depressing to see very little glimpses of what could've been, shattered by dumbed down platforming, "walk down this corridor" level design, constant idiot-proof "clues" and, to top it off, waves of mercenaries to brutally murder.

Bah.

It looks nice though, aside from the moon gravity hair and janky animations.

Looks more like a walking simulator than anything. Hold joystick forward -> shit crumbles around you. It looses its impact after a while

All i know is that the OG Tomb Raider had my heart beat a lot more when i had to do these ultra timed sequences of jumps then these "cinematic" will every do. Same way my heart rate goes up fighting bosses in DS or the likes.

I can't walk. Let me climb up this mountain.

I don't get the complaining about QTEs in an action game. There are to many variable things that happen for button combination for every action that can take place. Could easily look like UFC gameplay manual.

Nasty

Looks great. but I'm not gonna watch the whole video to avoid more spoilers

am just happy to see diversity in locations in this game unlike the first one.

Her hair is really distracting, it's like she's underwater or something.

lol, I was about to say that.

Yeah, if this is what the tombs are going to be then my interest is gone.
Also I hate this Lara's voice.

I dunno. Navigating traps etc to get to the actual tomb could be pretty interesting. Which is what the video shows and then cuts at. Tombs aren't right through the first door you find, else that would be a bit easy. :D

Also for the first tomb, they probably want to ease people in. Of course I could be utterly wrong and all they have done is spiced up the last TR game again but I do hope they have some actually challenging puzzles and platforming in TR.

The only almost fun looking part of the demo was skipped over, the rest asked less from the player than I thought possible.

Games like this will always have sections of less control -- establishing the area/story whatever -- I can't say I totally think it's good design either, but having played the first game I feel confident that I'll enjoy this one as well. I don't think many AAA games will design games exactly to my specs, because that'd be risky with that much money on the line (Alien Isolation is the rare exception and it's why I admire that game so much), but I can still enjoy Tomb Raider for what it is.

Had to roll my eyes at this. Ten minutes of 'push stick forward' slow-walking gameplay, then when it finally opens up into what seems to be a large, open area to explore and climb around they immediately skip it in favour of some cover-based shooting and more slow-mo cinematic grunt-leaping.

Her hair acted oddly in the beginning during the driving scene, like floaty. And either my player/PC was having hiccups or the game seems to have frame dips during some of the exploring bits and towards the end of the video.

Other than that, looks pretty grand. Also, when she said Prophet, are they going to include Islamic stuff to their story? If so, that and the pictures have me concerned about the potential problems they're gonna face. If it aint Islamic stuff, then its nothing worry bout.

Seconding this. I can barely make out the cuts on her back and shoulders. Which, unlike a lot of games actually look like deep cuts in the skin instead of a texture. Glorious facial animation tho.

The way she says 'canyon just ahead' in the 24th second seems so off. I dont know what is great about this facial animation. QB and UC look so much better right now.

Is it just me or the animation looks bad?

Not bad. Just very average.

I love cheat mode. Just push a bottom and everything is solved for you. And that hair looks very unnatural. It's looks like it's floating most of the time, especially in cutscenes.

Now this looks like an Uncharted game.

Booth demo's of Uncharted 4 look way more exciting and open than this. Far less gameplay interruptions as well.

What this fella says basically.

And no, I'm not a PS4 fanboy. Scalebound was the best thing I saw at Gamescom last week, but this demo left me cold.

Compared to this the Uncharted series is way more grounded.

Yeah sure... dude jumping out of a Jeep being chased off by tank, after killing dozens of baddies, lasso's his way unto a moving crane, and skates clean.

Both games feature ridiculous action and improbable scenarios and people love it.

A room with 2 obvious interactive elements... still needs fucking detective vision.
Unbelievable.

That part was a joke, people can figure this stuff out on their own, no need to shove it in their faces. Gonna turn that mode off once I can.

As far as the demo, I thought it looked great, but the last Tomb Raider was one of my favorites of last gen. Debating on either picking this up for Xbox One or waiting for the PS4 version because of the slew of games I will be getting this November.

What's wrong with that? Uncharted 4 is more of the same too, and people sure are excited over it.

I don't mind the blockbuster ride but TR2013 wasn't that enjoyable for me second time through because it's a bit too shallow. The new environments and such might bring some excitement back but it already looks too similar.

Lara must be very heavy if she is constantly causing huge rocks and giant walls to collapse by just walking or holding onto them
Shit breaks around her so many times by the end when the walls wait for her to climb up before caving in that it looks a bit theme park ride.

Graphically it's looking very good apart from chunky shadows and the depth of field or something's causing some chunky aliasing occasionally.

tell me that's an electrical chemlight/glowstick because "loosing light" and coming back on is not part of that LOL

DEVS: we need jumped scare so chemlight looses light @ this moment. lol

Fair enough, imo it's not the type of game that lends itself well through multiple playthroughs, I did it twice too, once on pc and again on PS4 but I wouldn't have but for the remastered version. Same as Uncharted.

Do we know if there's multiplayer again in this? Tried to do a few rounds in the first title but there were so few people I gave up on it.
Maybe they should think about some type of horde mode for this cause competitive multiplayer doesn't seem to be a thing for TR.
