Rise of the Tomb Raider Syria Demo

I enjoyed the last TR, and this one looks like it'll be pretty solid, too, but I can't help but always chuckle at the fact that she's basically Mr. Bean in a glass museum.

> Jump on this historic bridge. Oh no, it collapses!

> Reach for this ledge. Oh no, it collapses!

I can only imagine historians discovering these sites after she's passed through and marveling at what a mess she's constantly making of them. The last one was basically Lara Falling: The Game. Hope this one reels that back a little bit.

Just seems like a bastion of terrible gameplay design. If all you care about is graphics, then cool. But really, why does everything need to collapse/explode? When everything you touch crumbles and goes wrong then you start to expect everything else to as well, so then it comes as no surprise when you crash your helicopter into a snowy mountain, causing an avalanche that you just narrowly escape only to wind up in the enemy's base camp with nothing to defend yourself except a broken wine bottle. All while holding up on the control stick and rapidly mashing the A button.

Looks fun, hopefully with less shooting and stuff this time too. Did really think the first game relied far too much on combat and not enough on the traditional Tomb Raiding stuff which spoilt it a bit for me though.

Will have to watch it again but it seemed like some of the animations didn't quite look right, almost like there was a gap between one animation finishing and the animation that it rolled into. It's a small thing though and they still have a bit of time. Will have to watch it again to be see it again though.

Climbing out of upturned, burning jeeps seems to be the thing now.

Was never really interested in the first game, but the more I see from this, the more I want to play it. Looks fantastic; been itching to jump into a good 3rd-person action game.

This makes me realise just how much more problematic the Syria thing could be. Let's hope they play their cards right.

I can't walk. Let me climb up this mountain.

Besides that, not impressed with this demo at all. Nothing but walking, moaning, and QTEs. Doesn't look exciting at all.

Pretty much. It also bugs me that pretty much everything we've seen on this has shit constantly crumbling and blowing up. It'd be one thing if it presented interesting gameplay scenarios, but its all there simply for show to keep you running forward.

Exactly. And its not anything that presents any sort of challenge or interesting level design or interaction. I enjoyed the many moments in TR 2013 where this wasn't happening, but it seems like they've taken this aspect up a notch for this game, which is disappointing. Hopefully they're just showing off these parts to try and woo in the graphics whores, and that there is actually a decently designed game underneath the fluff.

The more I see of this game the more unimpressed I am. I thought they were pushing more of a metroidvania thing this time around.

Wut?

It's really weird that some people think what's shown here isn't within the realm of possibility of the Xbox One.

I mean, I know that the PS4 is more powerful etc. etc. but I played through Arkham Knight, Sunset Overdrive, and many other stunning-looking games on my Xbone and they all look incredible (if just more aliased because of the lower resolution). Forza Horizon 2, Wolfenstein The New Order, CoD Advanced Warfare, and many others are also seriously impressive.

I feel like some people think the Xbox One is like a last-generation system or something, while in truth it's capable of pretty much everything the PS4 is just at a lower resolution.

But I'm just a MS employee shill so carry on I guess?

this is the same forum where people thought Microsoft had some sort of middleware bullshot generator when they released the screenshot functionality because they looked too good.

I thought it looked pretty amazing except for the hair in that cutscene. Not sure what was going on there.

For a game that is supposedly utilizing the X1's power as their default template, nothing I've seen here is remotely anything above what its predecessor did. Considering this is an another level entirely, it is far too linear, scripted, and the staccato pacing of cutscene to gameplay is just jarring.

Oh neat, Syria. I don't really see anything that makes it immediately recognizable lol but I've been to mountains like that.

Anyway her face looks weird in this one.

Ridiculous... she falls off the mountain right into the digsite she has been looking for. Then she gets there and it's just in a valley completely visible in a helicopter (that then flies through looking for her). Then she completely destroys a shit load of it trying to jump across.

Dumb.

Just like Drake.

Awesome.

Looks fantastic! I am hoping for a PC version as that's all I have and loved the first one (Tomb Raider 2013). The complaints about it not looking much better than Tomb Raider are nonsense, it clearly looks superior in every realm. In particular, the facial animations are excellent,as is all of the small environment details like rocks and scorpions crawling through the skeletons.

Cinematic slow walking, auto platforming, piss easy puzzles, cutscenes everywhere breaking immersion... meh. I'm sure the combat will be great, but the characters and story will probably be terrible once again so idk if this is a Day 1 purchase anymore. This game looks more like Uncharted than the first game did.(though to be fair Uncharted 4 does look much improved in level design) I enjoyed the first game, but this type of design is really starting to grate on me.

Game look visually astounding. The hair is moving funny, but it looks great. Can't wait to pick it up already.

Is Jason Graves returning for the score?

That guy who seems like he might be the main antagonist looks incredibly bland. Mathias had more to his design and that was already lame, too.

every adventure she seems to get abdominal injuries. Also I don't think a light on her back is going to produce a perfect outlined shadow

Does anyone else think the scope of this game was held back by its cross-gen development process?

I was excited about this one until I saw the Gamescom on-stage demo. It looks neutered due to having to be on both last and current gen consoles. =(

I'm looking forward to Tomb Raider 3, hopefully it'll throw Lara and the player into the wilderness with a compass and tell them to figure it out. =)

I'll give the cutscene, walk-talking, and QTE interruptions a break, because TR 2013 also started exactly like that and eventually eased up on on it quite a lot -- and this seems to be the very beginning of the game.

I wonder how fast travel will work with multiple countries, though! I'd rather not lock previous areas, regardless of how unrealistic it would be.

Now, regarding graphics: Looks stunning.

This is not an accurate description of playing Tomb Raider. It is a description of a demo in which they show you stuff happening.

I am a massive old time TR fan but the new one while being a good game left a bad taste n me. Because man they are STILL solely relying on breaking platform/ledges for set pieces...fuckin hell ! After that jungle video I thought they'd at the very least not make it so obvious because that was the entirety of the first game i.e. run/climb in a straight path while all the shit you use for support breaks down. Even Uncharted doesn't rely on one element so bad :p

I will still give this game some benefit of doubt due to that jungle demo.

I like how she holds her ribs in pain while walking and then goes mountain climbing like it's nothing.

Cue up some Stallone or Schwarzenegger and notice how the rib holding is used to convey perseverance through pain.

You are right....

It is nothing......
