Rise of the Tomb Raider Syria Demo

I agree. Alice's hair isn't plausible. However, if you turn her upside down her hair will hang. Neither here nor in TR2013 does that happen except for larger masses like the ponytail. It isn't nostalgia, I did a quick search, found the first clip to illustrate my point.
Just look at the jeep section in that clip and tell me whether or not that hair should be hanging.
It's not flawless sure but neither is Alice's. I maintain TressFX is extremely convincing in most situations from what I've seen. If I had the time I could also capture some wonky hair behavior in Alice, the point is lost on me considering one attemps to simulate hair physics while the other tries to fake it however way they can and I'd say the result is good considering the negligible cost. I understand why simulating it would prove a lot more difficult. If I had to draw a list of every tech flaws I could find TressFX would be at the very bottom of it.
I'd rather they improve texture quality and shaders over TressFX for the PC release.

Yes, let's go back to this:

this is so much better and really puts the nail in the coffin that the new tomb raider is laughable.

THIS puzzle looks really hard though... damn son, are those steps?

tomb_raider3_screenshots_08.jpg
Im not sure if you played any original Tomb Raiders, but some of the puzzles were very hard.

the hair need to be tuned down..big time. it's very distracting. Geralt hair moved kinda realistically at least and not Medusa-like like this.

I didn't pay attention the first time I watched the gameplay, but I read all these comments talking about the hair and the first thing I noticed the second time watching it was exactly the hair. Damn. It is not very distracting in the gameplay, but the cutscenes wow... so weird.

How long is the series going to be cursed with Luddington's terrible voice and over-acting? Worse still, they've done face-cap for the cutscenes and it hasn't worked at all either and looks poorly lip sync'd as a result.

This goes back to my point, that they're reaching the uncanny valley with this stuff, and worse, these uncanny effects are happening during cutscenes. The flaws that exist in TressFX make the effect far more jarring than attempting to fake it. Honestly, if the PC version lets me turn it off, all the better.

The hair is fine during gameplay to me but the intro cutscenes... Good lord, it looks so weird!

Anyway, I actually enjoyed the last TR so I'm looking forward to this.

Anyone else think Lara was more attractive here?

tomb-raider-2013-wallpaper1.jpeg
Thankfully, "attractive" wasn't their end goal when it comes to designing female characters.
And less of it at the same time. I find it weird how the hair has all these strand physics, but it still remains little more than a skull cap with a few loose threads. When she is getting out of the crashed jeep, you can see the loose hair (or what should be) above her face completely defying gravity, glued to the side of her head.

If they're going for floaty hair they might as well go the Alice route.

Tbh that's my only issue with TressFX - that it clearly has a "mold" and then just the tips/really external bits move properly. I assume it's for performance reasons but it's kind of weird when she's hanging upside down and the only bit away from her face is the ends of her bangs + ponytail.

I never get the complaints about Luddington.
While her accent could certainly be a bit more British for my taste, I absolutely love her performance in both the 2013 reboot and what I've seen of this. One of the most convincing and well directed voice overs I've heard in all of last generation.

Don't really feel like buying this, it looks great hats off to CD for making such a polished game.
For me Naughty Dog changed the playing field in terms of attracting me to this style of 3rd person action adventure in terms of storytelling, and LC just doesn't seem up to scratch.
I hope I am proven wrong, as I would like LC to be a strong franchise.

I can't walk. Let me climb up this mountain.

Besides that, not impressed with this demo at all. Nothing but walking, moaning, and QTEs. Doesn't look exciting at all.

ALMOST...(moaning)...THERRRRE!

sounds like the new tomb raider alright.

i also like how she move the hand to move away the water when it's barely reaching her knees at 3:30

I doubt that's the case, she's clearly designed in both to be aesthetically pleasing.

Also this game looks like a lot of fun. I'm pretty excited to play it next year.
Idk, I think if they'd gone only for attractiveness we would've ended up with old Lara all over again :P I imagine they were trying to make her aesthetically pleasing but I doubt they intentionally pursued beauty as the main goal. Also I noticed in this game, she seems to have even more realistic proportions than TR2013 - her hips seem quite a bit wider.
Her hair seemss completely off in its physicalisation. That is like.. water interaction or inertia. What the hell.
It's only in the opening cutscene that it's really bad, it's really weird, I think it must've been a glitch at the beginning as it looks fine in later scenes + gameplay :P

I it looks a little better I guess. Platforming looks like it might be okay.

My issue with the Gamescom demo and TR2013 is it pretty much looks (and plays) like any other modern third person action game with very little to deviate from the formula they all seem to share these days. It may be more solidly executed than a lot of the old Tomb Raider games, but it also feels less interesting to me for doing basically what every other game is doing. And when it comes to being a super-scripted shooter, I still think Uncharted 2 and even 3 pulled that off better. They at least had well-tuned level design.

And as for the puzzles and tomb raiding, I just want them to go back to the puzzle solving they had in Legend, Anniversary, and Underworld. That was really good. It was the main reason I played those games. What sucked in those games was the combat. I don't get why we can't have standard modern TPS combat and the adventure elements they had in the last-gen trilogy.

"We have that TressFX thingie, we need to show it off somehow! Let's make the hair move ALL THE TIME!"

I hope that they'll tone it down a bit before release.

I gotta say I am kind of disappointed with the writing/story segments though. Everything I saw until now don't give me hope that it is going to be better than the first one. Who is the creative director in Crystal Dynamics? I mean, the one that directs the cutscenes, writing, story, etc.? They really need to fire him. The cutscene in the beginning of this video is soooo bad. Just to make it clear though, I still liked TR2013. But I thought they would up their game in regards to this...

Is this single player only? MP has been removed completely?

I think Lara's looks way better and her facial animations are improved drastically.

3 more months to go!

In an interview with Geoff Keighley he asked if they're doing multiplayer this time around and Brian Horton (Game Director) responded with "we're not talking about this right now" so that kinda suggests there will be MP.

Dear god. No MP trophies please :( it's the only thing that stopped me from getting a Platinum on the PS4 release because I didn't want to boost (which is how 99% of people who have it got it, I'm sure :P)

Dunno, I needed to skip ~5 minutes of interactive exploration cinematic to get to some proper gameplay.

That 'puzzle' at 8:50 though, not only it's obvious what's to be done here, but both puzzle elements were highlighted treating the gamer like a halfwit. Yep, won't bother with this game.
I agree. Shallow and pedantic.

I'm very sad this is cross gen because creatively I love the reboot and the style in this demo is great

I didn't like the 2013 Tomb Raider, but this one although not much has changed, has this alluring extra extra layer of shine and polish to it.

It's almost naughty, like dark chocolate and Lara has this Japanese love doll vibe to her.

Oh, interesting.

I wouldn't feel bad if it was omitted completely since I didn't really like it. Only played MP on the 360 version though. Felt like there was some heavy input lag and it just didn't control as smooth as it did in the single player game.

Would rather they just focus on making the SP game as best as possible.

The franchise is called Tomb Raider.
The Lara Croft games are their own separate thing.

What's wrong with that? Uncharted 4 is more of the same too, and people sure are excited over it.

I didn't like TR2013 very much. I don't see why I'd like "more of the same".

They really need to improve their set pieces if they're still chasing Uncharted. Or they need to improve the platforming, exploration, interactivity, etc. if they're going to differentiate themselves. It looks like they're not really improving anything other than certain new aspects to the combat and stealth, which were both good in the previous game.

It looks like they're still going after a serious tone, so they need less things that break the seriousness and more things that make us care about what's going on, most notably, compelling characters and a well written narrative that pushes the characters with realistic motives.

Folks love to bash this game, damn. Can't we all just agree that it looks good and the set pieces look interesting. Hair is fine. I'm not trying to take her out on a date, were killing bad guys and escaping death.

Love this video, still i have some complaints. The camera still have that weird shakiness to it, hated it in the first game. The dialogue that Lara has with herself dosent work one bit, it works for Drake because the writing is good and he actually makes funny remarks, in this she just talking serious nonsense to the "player". It would be cool to see something new, this just looks like the same old, nothing has changed formula. Uncharted has bigger environment with great destruction. Would be great to see CD make some use of the extra hardware power (and no the super fluffy hair dosent count)

But... The set pieces don't look interesting to me. I'm really tired of seeing the same sliding and falling sequences. I got tired of them from watching the trailers for TR2013... There's also no combat inside the set pieces from what we've seen, much like TR2013. What they need to do to make the set pieces interesting is either tie them in with interesting puzzles or have them be Uncharted levels of over the top and creative. I don't mind either one but they'd be making long time TR fans happy as well as making something unique if they tie them in with interesting puzzles rather than chasing Uncharted. Or, they could do both. Problem is, they seem to be doing neither.

The problem with the hair is that it's flowing like she's underwater in the beginning. The rest of it looks fine, just that intro cutscene.

You are right, but it doesn't looks as good in Uncharted. Uncharted 4 looks pretty amazing, but the lighting, modleing, and shaders look so good in Tomb Raider. Even Lara's skin during gameplay looks much more lifelike. There is something about the weight of her clothing and the shaders that make her actually look wet instead of it being just a graphical effect.

See Uncharted 4 here:https://youtu.be/Ow2cL-pp6p8?t=3m32s

I love that Crystal Dynamics is competing toe to toe with my favorite developer of all time. It is about time. It will just make both games better.

Technically they are not really competing, U4's latest demo is so much more impressive than this corridor walking straight demo of TR it's not even funny, much more impressive scale, physics, and fidelity.

Still this demo of TR looked amazing, I would say it's the second most impressive ONE title after QB but it's not close to being as impressive as the U4 demo.

This game looks really cool and something I'd like to play. The action is intense as always, and the gameplay looks fluid and smooth. I just wish things would slow down sometimes though, like when you find that big tomb/ruin in this video. It feels like a wasted opportunity to just explore and learn about the mysteries and puzzles of that environment, and take in all the atmosphere and history. You can't do that when you're getting chased by a bunch of dudes and a helicopter. Everything we've seen of this game so far has been go, go, go. Which I'm okay with occasionallly as I go through a Tomb Raider, just not all the time. Overall I'm still interested though.

so much salt in this thread you can almost taste it.

This Demo look quite good. Wonnder why they didn't show this instead of that boring one on the reveal.

Seems like folks love to bash every game that was ever created around here lol.

Btw the game is looking great. They are following the same formula that worked on the reboot with a few tweaks, so I'm all for it. Too bad as a PS4 owner will have to wait a little longer to play it, but this is certainly a must play.

Not trying to bash the new direction these games are heading in but the puzzles in the older games were much harder than 'shoot the thing swinging at you in slow motion'. One element missing (from what we've seen so far and from the last game) is that there is no moment where Lara walks into a room that is completely open and has free roam to go anywhere in the room. The free roaming allowed puzzles to be more than walking forward. You would have to figure out how to, let's say, open a tomb. You try to open it and you can't with little to no help on how to change that. So you go back to where you started and look around for something that could help solve the puzzle. It took thought, experimentation and more to advance in the games. When you did, it was like a lightbulb appears over your head and it felt amazing.

In the last TR game and, for what we've seen, in the new game, you go forward. Lara will figure it out for you. Just watch out for QTE and button prompts.

I say this as a fan of the first reboot game, but the exploration was much more difficult in the older games. I will be buying this new game when I'm able to.
