Rock Band 4 announced for PS4 and Xbox One

Every time this thread is bumped and it's not to inform us that they have got IONs working with Rock Band 4 I become a little more bitter. I was so excited to purchase a new version, but without that I'm out. I don't care if my ~1800 songs or whatever it is are left to rot. No IONs, no sale.

right there with you. BITTER and getting SALTY

Managed to get my RB 2 drums with cymbals back from my friend. I'm set now while I wait for ion support.

I'm ready Harmonix! Now, about that digital pre-order for Xbox One...

Again. They're not choosing to not port that stuff. They just literally haven't figured out how to make USB peripherals work yet. Similar to how they're still trying to figure out multi disc games.

It's not a policy.
Oh crap, I didn't see your other reply to me. That's awesome that they are still considering it since it seemed like it was just a straightforward "no" when I first read about it.

PM me when they add IONS support so i can buy and play. :(

Everyone wanting ION support (not just those quoted), I suggest you look at their Official FAQ in relations to the matter:

Q: I play Rock Band with my ION Drum Kit. Will the ION Drum Kit, as well as other MIDI drum kits, be compatible with Rock Band 4?
A: The short answer is “no, not at launch.” Our first priority is to make sure that the core Rock Band legacy instruments be compatible on day one when Rock Band 4 launches – and they will be! If you want to see ION support in Rock Band 4, you can let ION Audio know by contacting them here: http://www.ionaudio.com/support/. We know that many of you play Rock Band using these peripherals, and we are actively working on finding a solution to this compatibility issue.

They are working on a solution, but it sounds like they need the help from ION Audio on the matter. So while you wait for an announcement of ION support, go voice your complaints/opinions on the matter with ION Audio (http://www.ionaudio.com/support/) so that hopefully something comes of it! I don't use IONs myself, but I'm going to go let their support know now that I would love to see ION support in Rock Band 4.

Why? What permission would they need from MS? Harmonix certainly has a list of games that my Live account bought from my Xbox360, and a way to confirm that I am the owner of that account. They don't need to ask MS for permission to access that.

Then they just use that information to offer me the DLC at a discounted price on my PSN account. As if it were a sale, preorder bonus, or any other discount.

The reason I proposed that solution is that I presumed it was a way to circumvent any stonewalling by either party. I don't see how they'd have any control over it.
Lol, wow. You are WAY over simplifying this. Like others said, it would require unprecedented cooperation/coordination/work from both Sony and MS to make this happen. So in other words, not happening.

I asked them about IONs after that FAQ went up and this is what ION Audio wrote back
Hello,

Thank you for your interest in Ion Audio.

There are currently no plans to update the Drum Rocker for use with new generation consoles. I can submit a feature request for possible future releases.

Thank you for the opportunity to help. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Best Regards,
Not much there, but hopefully they get enough emails to take notice and make them compatible or at least make a new drum brain or something.

MIDI pro adapter is my gig, which falls square in HMX's camp. Any word on that? :(

Fucking hell, that just ruined everything. I have no desire to keep a 360 lying around when every other game will likely be backwards compatible with the Xbone.

Guess I'll have to hope keyboards are added to RB4.
It's not that they "won't do it". It's that they can't because the wireless signal/radio in the 360 is different than the one in the XBone. That's the whole reason we need an adapter just to use our 360 instruments in RB4. Why the heck would MS go that far out of their way to make ANY game (not just RB but tons of others) that used peripherals on the XBox 360 work with the XBone just so you can play a game you already own, gaining them nothing? I think we just need to be happy we are getting backwards compatibility at all after hearing Sony's stance on it.

What would you call it then?
A hurdle they haven't figured out yet. There is no policy or mandate that they will not port those games. They aren't porting those games because they haven't figured out how to make peripherals work yet the same way they haven't figured out how to make multi disc games work yet. That doesn't mean they aren't working on it.

No Rock Band Network?

I didn't know that. Fuck.

How am I meant to play Rainbowdragoneyes now?

RBN isn't a no, but it's also not being worked on at the moment. Probably because Harmonix doesn't really own the rights to distribute all of the RBN songs, they're more or less a broker.

To port over RBN they'd have to contact the company that authored the song, get permission to port it to the next gen, and then figure out how to get those companies paid by Sony, since MS's XNA backend handled payments for them before. The RBN songs on PS3 were, to overly simplify it, handled like they were official HMX DLC.

not impossible to resolve, but obvious why they'd prioritize all the songs they only have to deal with a single point of contact for first.

do we know if there were any differences with the songs releases on the ps3 via RBN?

I mean I know the 360 version was just flooded with more songs, but the ps3 only got harmonix select RBN songs so it's possible they had to obtain the rights like other songs to release them on the ps3.

We don't know for sure, but I believe the RBN songs that are available for free for PS4/Xbox if you preorder RB4 on Amazon/GS are all ones that made it over to PS3. Someone correct me if I'm wrong

Hopefully at least the RBN songs that came out on PS3 transfer over. As someone who'd most likely get RB4 on PS4 that's all I'd need personally.

No RBN songs at all in RB4 would suck.

X1 user but I agree whole-heartedly. Especially considering my favourite full album DLC, Devin Townsend's "Ziltoid" was an RBN release, and is available on both PS3 and 360

So much good shit on RBN. Including some really high profile artists.

Ok I don't have the ION drums but my friend does so here is my question. I know right out of the box they won't work but if Harmonix got the Midi adapter to work couldn't you in theory plug the ION's into the midi and then the Midi into the Xbox One? Maybe I'm not understanding the midi adapter as we have never used it but couldn't this work?

Does "Rock Band Network" just refer to Rock Band 1-3 DLC or is it something separate that I've never heard of?

RBN was a network and creation tool that Harmonix made with Microsoft's aid for users and creators to chart, and publish their own music, or somebody elses music with their permission. There were a crazy amount of songs published for independent artists, and even some high profile artists. It added an insane amount of variety alongside HMX's official DLC, you'd often get a dozen or so songs every fortnight, it was great. Made up at least a third of the total DLC I think, if not more.

Rock Band Network is a service that allowed artists/record labels to author and put out their own songs, as opposed to the songs put out weekly by Harmonix as "official DLC". It allowed for a lot more songs to be made and for tons of genres to be explored. The authoring process relied somewhat on XNA Creators Club (on the 360) which is why there were more RBN songs on the 360 than PS3. The Wikipedia page on it is actually pretty knowledgeable: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_Band_Network

It was a separate part of the RB3 store where bands could get their music put in for people to download since Harmonix had terrible taste in music. LOTS of good stuff was in there. Hopefully it finds its way into RB4 eventually.

The Rock Band Network was a way of artists getting their songs into Rock Band (mainly the Xbox 360 version, though a handful of songs got ported to PS3 and Wii) without having to go directly through Harmonix. It was mostly a way to let lesser-known artists to get into the game, but occasionally you had well-known songs like Semi-Charmed Life, Blue (Da Be Dee), and St. Elmo's Fire released through RBN.

Seems like, in a good faith gesture, Harmonix could at least offer me the DLC I bought on Xbox360 at a discounted price for PS4. They could charge me whatever they have to pay for the songs and forgo their portion of the proceeds. Everybody wins in that scenario: the artist/publisher get their money, I get the song at at least a discounted price, and Harmonix while not making any money off the resale of the song, gets a myriad of people like me who will otherwise not buy the game, to consider hopping onboard.

Logistically it should be simple. They have hooks in Live and PSN. Let me log into each on their site, do a quick carry over of what I've bought from one to the other, and show/provide those tracks at a discount on their in game store.

I can't imagine there would be any practical issues there, and as for resources to implement it, it doesn't seem to be a terrible burden. The influx of console-switchers who would otherwise eschew the game being motivated to buy it would certainly offset their costs, considering immediate money earned for the game and rebuying of plastic instruments, not to mention future DLC sales they wouldn't otherwise get from this population of gamers. I hope they consider something like this.

How many song do you already have? If you are one of the guys who still owns the entire RB set, and owns something like 300+ songs, why not just looks on craigslist for a cheap Xbox One?

X1 + RB4 = $2-300 for used system + $60 game = $260-$360
RB4 PS4 Full band set + 300 songs of discounted DLC = $250 + $198 = $448

The DLC pricing is based on your logical discount, and based on what I believe is Hamonix's pricing structure (1/3 HMX, 1/3 artist, 1/3 1st party) It's easy to see which choice is more logical. You get the same thing, plus you get an entire new system that you can enjoy a separate library of games on.

Your point, while noted, doesn't really make sense for anyone in the end, and would likely be a far greater engineering cost on Harmonix's end than you realize, for something they would not directly make money on. I'm sure they would even do it if they could, but I can't see any way either 1st party would allow this type of thing. Why would they? it would just be giving the opposition the benefit, in a situation that is currently potentially benefiting them a lot. It's cheaper and smarter to buy a new system than replace your entire rock band library and instruments.

Same here. I can't go back to a stock RB kit. I won't go back.

Also, outside of the XNA framework issues, PS3 didn't get that much RBN because Sony limited Harmonix to a maximum of 5 songs per week for RBN.

Nintendo didn't have a limit, so the Wii actually has about as many RBN 1.0 songs as the PS3 does, even though there were only 4 RBN batches on Wii before they pulled the plug on them, versus 26 weeks of PS3 RBN 1.0 releases. RBN 2.0 songs were never on Wii, though.

It was mathematically impossible for PS3 to ever catch up with the 5 song limit to the 360 output. Who knows why Sony did that.

The MIDI adapter is a wired controller, and it isn't supported, either.

I own 10 or 15 RBN songs and I'm pretty sure it's just most of the popular ones so, like others, I hope they would at least to look make available the songs that were ported over to the PS3 since that seemed to be the most popular ones.

Wait, no RBN? Bummer news! I didn't have a lot of songs, but I did own some and it sucks I won't be able to play them! Hopefully we can play them in the future. ;(

The more I hear about this game the more I want to skip it until they get rbn, ions, and all the other shit worked out.

There are so many things that need clarified.

I want my Cynic in RB4, imagine freestyle solos over technical jazz death

I can't believe the stuff I've missed after I stopped playing.

I'm reading through just the RBN metal songs and am reeling in pain at what I'll be missing out on in RB4.

Fingers crossed for RBN support someday.

I swear to god they better get IONs working, absolute bullshit if they can't.

It's a controller interface, make a dongle or something, HMX.

This is exactly my position. Until everything's established, I'm content to retain my 360 as my Rock Band machine.

I'm still sitting here waiting on Xbox One news and compatibility. Was kind of hoping it would all be ironed out by now in terms of details.

I really wish they were going to release a physical standalone game. It kinda sucks that I have to buy the bundle to get a disc. I know I could do the digital version but I just like having the physical media.

At least one of the songs that I know of off hand they're offering as a pre-order bonus is from Rock Band Network with Push Push (Lady Lightning). So I'm thinking that it'll just be select songs that made the transition.

Yes, kind of sucks.......I Am Abomination had two songs that were fucking amazing to play on all instruments on the RBN
