US vice-president Joe Biden is nearing an imminent decision on whether to challenge Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders for the Democratic nomination as supporters report a surge in interest from potential backers.

“We have seen a huge spike in momentum not only in the last day or two, but over the past few weeks,” said William Pierce, director of Draft Biden, a political action committee formed in March to prepare the ground for a possible campaign.

“We’re seeing people signing up on the website, the phone ringing off the hook, people donating, people emailing in and writing Biden letters,” he said.

Though officially unconnected to Biden, the Super Pac has had 195,000 people register their support for him running and sufficient donations to employ eight staff in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina, together with a similar number at its headquarters in Chicago.

Pierce declined to speculate on the cause of the recent surge but it coincides with setbacks for Clinton, who fell behind Sanders for the first time in a recent New Hampshire opinion poll and has been beset by continued questions over her use of a private email account while serving as secretary of state.

Biden would be an interesting addition to the race, might actually make the Democratic race a bit more engaging. Would prove how much of Sanders support is due to his politics, rather than his core attribute of Not Being Hillary Clinton.

Everyone kinda wants to see him debate Trump, basically.

Remove all the other candidates, and just sell that event on PPV. More buys than the final Mayweather fight, guaranteed.

This would be great. He's much more likely to pull votes from Hillary than Sanders.

If he runs it would only make Sanders numbers look bigger. Joe would get a bust just after he joined the race, but he would basically be a spoiler for Clinton in the long term.

So...pls run uncle Joe, pls..

Lol I think a recent poll did not show this to be the case.

Really? I'd be interested to see that. Biden would be the rightmost of a him, Hillary, Sanders trio so it stands to reason he'd pull more from the centrist Hillary than the leftist Sanders.

If anything he's going to pull from Sander too. While his numbers have dropped, Sanders have gone up at a similar rate. He'd likely pull support from both. I imagine he'd overtake Sanders pretty quick though.

In the weeks after he jumps into the race, probably. But in the long run he will only pull from "establishment" democrats that support Clinton. Sanders support comes from a comparable place Trump support comes from. The more establishment democrats run, the more Sanders will stand out. The only treat to Sanders is Warren.

If you look at the trend you can see Biden's support shifting to Bernie. Bernie has brought in a bunch of new support, but a lot of it is Biden supporters as well. He might be in more trouble than Hillary if Biden jumps in. Also, what he ran on last time won't be what he runs on this time. The electorate is far enough to the left that he won't have to be centrist like he was last time.

He'll basically be an insurance policy for if Hillary truly gets indicted or taken down by scandal. There's no way the democrat party would sit back and let Sanders be the nominee in that case. Biden would be the clear choice.

This is bad reading of actual data.

See the line for Joe. Its flat. It didnt plummet once Sanders started to rise. It has actually rise a little after Clinton´s started to go down (May onwards).

It would be interesting to see how this would change the polls. I could see him pulling either "establishment" votes from Clinton or "antiestablishment"/"not Hillary" votes from Sanders. Or both, and we have the world's most awkward devil's three way.

For whatever reason I hope he does
Raises the platform of the dem nomination more, possibility of him debating trump, and honestly a three horse race > two horse
and besides obama going ham in this last term gives him a great launching pad

I don't think Joe is enough of a boat-rocker to take on Hillary, as the Dem establishment really does seem keen on her (if only to add "first woman president" to its resume, I guess), but honestly, I think the man would clean her clock if he actually went full steam ahead with it. He's a million times more charismatic, doesn't have nearly the negative baggage, comes across as more intelligent and principled, and has that lovable "Uncle Joe" quality to him.

I would vote for him simply for the fact alone that this would guarantee at least four more years of The Onion writing stories about "Diamond Joe."

Joe Biden is a really great guy and a very strong, charismatic politician. His joining the race could only benefit voters.

I don't think he would hurt Sanders much, but he will definitely hurt Clinton's campaign. His administration would basically be a tacit continuation of Obama's (Like HW Bush was to Reagan), and I can see how that would be appealing to moderates that like Obama but question Clinton's integrity.

I don't think there is much interest in a Biden candidacy, to be honest. I doubt he'll run.
I'm not sure if he'd pull support from Bernie or Hillary, though. If he becomes the "Not Clinton" candidate, he'll pull from Bernie, as many Sanders supporters feel like Bernie's a long shot, which Biden wouldn't be. But he could also appeal to the more establishment supporting base and pull from Hillary. If I had to guess, I'd say he'd drain off Hillary's supporters more, but he'd definitely damage both of their momentum. I doubt it would change the likely outcome though, which is Hillary getting the nod. I doubt he would even be able to knock Sanders out of the #2 spot.

There's seriously like zero Biden momentum. If there is, I don't know where it's coo no from, but it isn't the activist base, young people or unions.

He has the Uncle Joe problem.

Is he such a good speaker? I've never seen him in video. I'm simply unfamiliar to him. Is there a video of him that could make me understand why he could counter Trump with his bullshit?
