Destiny PSA: Xur's selling the Gjallerhorn this week

Completely anecdotal but we've observed in the OT that the drop rate for Exotics seems significantly higher the week Xur is gonna sell something. Maybe there's a link, maybe it's false pattern recognition.

At any rate, congrats on the Horn :) doesn't really make a difference where you got it.

Yeah definitely just a coincidence. There's always somebody getting a new exotic, and they just happen to come out of the woodwork if Xur sells it. Makes it seem like it's dropping more than it actually is.

For people worried about the nerf, here is exactly what Bungie had to say about it:

Gjallarhorn
If Destiny had a nuke it would be the “Ballerhorn.” We definitely intended to have a high damage Heavy Weapon that was ideal for PvE destruction. What we did not intend, and what we unfortunately saw, was pick up Raid and Nightfall groups gating participation based on whether or not players had this weapon. Gjallarhorn was so strong that for many people it had become the only answer to getting through tough encounters, and therefore they were less willing to spend time with other players that didn’t have it.

Equipped Heavy Weapon Popularity (PVE)

We strive for Destiny to be a place where a single weapon or strategy does not dictate how, or with whom, you spend your time. In the new world Gjallarhorn is still worthy of its legacy as an exotic Heavy Weapon, but we hope it promotes inclusive behavior rather than exclusivity.

Reduce damage of Wolfpack Rounds

If anyone doesn't know here is how Gjallarhorn works.

  • Rocket is fired.
  • Rocket has impact damage if target is hit head on (this doesn't happen often due to proximity detonation). This damage isn't being nerfed
  • Rocket has explosion damage from the primary shell. This damage isn't being nerfed.
  • Rocket releases 10 Wolfpack rounds that act as small individual seekers.
  • Wolfpacks track targets and detonate. All Wolfpacks together equal about 35% damage of initial rocket explosion. This is the number being nerfed.

So basically, a single Gjallarhorn rocket was doing about 35% extra damage. It's still going to do extra damage, just not 35% worth. Knowing Bungie, they don't nerf things in large quantities. I'd expect the Wolfpack rounds to be dropped to 20% damage at the lowest.

IMO the wolfpack rounds would be fine if the base rocket damage was lower, having both a strong rocket and then strong wolfpack rounds is too much.

It's good people will be able to get it, if it means not getting kicked from some fire teams for not having it.

I had one of these before it was really popular or better, before the player base realised how useful it actually was. My dumbass certainly didn't figure it out. Can't remember where I got it though. Quit Destiny at lvl 29 missing iirc, missing one or two pieces of the raid gear.

My question is, how has Bungie handled weapon balance historically? Kneejerk or pretty solid thought goes into buffs/nerfs? Mixture of both?

Haha I knew this would happen after their write-up about it in the weapon balancing post.

Now we're pretty much guaranteed to get a huge nerf to the wolf pack rounds now that everyone has one. Bungie wont want people melting their bullet sponges so easily.

It's a shame that so many people are missing Gjallarhorn, when I'm missing The Fourth Horseman.

The good part is that it may end up on Xur's table, or drop after using the exotic buff he's going to sell.

And where's my damned Arachnid? It's literally the only exotic armor I don't own. :|

35% damage? I think it's more than that. Guys at reddit claimed a gjally rocket did 8000 total damage to a target compared to 3000 from a standard launcher.

Can you still get strange coins from chests? Or from decrypting engrams? Or from the first public event of a day? From the strike playlist? HELP. I need one damn coin from somewhere.

it's gotta be a lot more than 35 %.

The main thing about the Wolfpack rounds is that they have tracking too.

No other RL's AoE damage has tracking.

Yeah, I'm not even sure it's worth doing the weekly for it. Doesn't seem great for PvP and there won't be fresh PvE content until TTK... and by then it will have been significantly nerfed.

Course I'll get it.

It's a solar warhead with seeking arc cluster bombs. Even with a nerf its crazy in anything with 2/3 of the burns.

Has Destiny gotten any better in the last 4 months? I'm not sure whether to return but I keep seeing so many people who have stuck with it. Sorry if this is changing the course of the thread but I'm genuinely curious.

So what does one do to buy from Xur? I bought the Ghost edition, and haven't touched the game since 2 months after launch. I want to get back in before the taken king launches.

Get 17 strange coins (run Weekly strike missions to get coins, one per character per week; if you're still short then unlock the prison of elders in the house of wolves storyline and do level 28 POE to get some coins at the end from the small chests). You have until 5AM Sunday morning eastern U.S. Time to get the coins and visit xur in the tower bar near the ship hanger.

Edit; also if you sign up in the next few hours for a Bungie newsletter the postmaster may deliver you 9 coins for free. https://www.reddit.com/r/DestinyTheGame/comments/3gyi9l/sga_want_the_ghorn_but_you_dont_have_enough/

I remember when I got a Legendary Rocket Launcher with cluster bombs that detonate after the rocket explodes and I thought "I can just ascend this and have a makeshift Gjallerhorn!"

How little I knew.

Much better, improvements in most areas and a lot more coming.

Earn Strange Coins by playing the Weekly/POE/anything really and use said Strange Coins to purchase items from Xur.

Ok thanks. Welp, didn't get one from the public event.

The 4th golden chest you collect on Mars has a guaranteed strange coin if you haven't collected those yet; there are some easy to follow videos online.

I'm ecstatic about the Xur news despite all the "NERF!!" naysayers. I've been playing since Day 1 on both consoles with over 1,000 hours and the damn thing never dropped for me.

Get to level 28 somehow, do the Weekly and grind PoE 28 for coins. Both have matchmaking so you don't have to face too many problems.

House of Wolves was good and fixed stuffs in good ways.
TTK looks to go even further in this direction.
The dark below still is a robbery, it sucks and is an insult to any gamers, game designers and basic logic and common sens. It's only redeeming quality is that it has a cool looking raid

Thank you both. I've never played the game other then solo, and I my highest level character is 14, so I doubt this will happen.

Congrats to y'all who are getting it for the first time; it's definitely worth the time and effort to upgrade it (at least for a few weeks yet)

Oh sweet, I have 24 strange coins. I got a bunch in the mail the other day, I guess 9 for doing the weekly nightfall and a few for having my email address active on bungie? When I just logged into the Destiny app it popped up a thing saying that I'd get some strange coins for enabling the email newsletter, but I was already on it so maybe that's where the other coins came from. "Mysterious benefactor" indeed....

cool i can get another for my new character! i dismantled too many and should have kept atleast 2 spares

guess its going to be gimped or multiple alternatives provided in TTK, it would be nice to have pseudo class of boss killer heavy weapons

I hope it's Hawkmoon next week.

The Horn being on sale will shut up a lot of the guys. Thank god.

Can't sell exclusive weapons. I'd say he will sell it on the 15th when TTK is out. That's when the PS Exclusive stuff runs out.

Enjoy it people, it's getting a nerf with TTK :(

After having to dismantle two Gjally's (since I have three maxed) while friends still don't have one, I'm grateful to see Bungie finally put it back on the (black) market.

Enjoy it people, it's getting a nerf with TTK :(

Even with a Wolfpack nerf, it will still be the best rocket launcher in the game.

Since more people are going to get ghally here is a public service announcement. Weapons of light does nothing for ghally...despite what you see on video after video it does nothing for the ghallahorn. Weapons of light only affects projectile damage on rocket launchers...and since ghallahorn almost always proximity explodes, it never gets that damage buff...it also doesn't affect wolfpack rounds...

Is it bad that I have a lvl 32 Titan and don't even know where these things drop?

But I'll try to buy one, don't think I have enough SCs though.

If you haven't already, do the weekly heroic for 9 strange coins. And register your email with Bungie for 9 more strange coins.

I figured.

I have been playing since launch, never got one.

I played a nightfall last week, got one. Played another nightfall right after, my buddy got one. Third nightfall in a row, I got a second Gjallerhorn.

3 Gjallerhorn drops, 3 Nightfalls, in a row, didn't skip a beat.

Going to buy a third one just for the hell of it.

It should have a badge on the side saying,"Xur rulez" so everyone can see they only xurned it and didn't earn it.

I kid of course, I have two(earned) and didn't feel like leveling up another one that's going to just be nerfed because bungie sees everyone using it. Bungie is weird like that, nerf the horn so people will use something else, then sell it so everyone can have it. So why nerf it in the first place?

I un-installed Destiny so I would not be tempted to play it till TTK. Fuck, gotta re download it.

You don't, though. If you aren't interested in playing between now and TTK, you don't need to worry about having a Ghorn or any other existing piece of gear.
