Metal Gear Solid V Will not Have a Preload on Steam

GZ worked on low settings on my PC so really hoping TPP does as well.

It's been 3 freaking years since this was revealed, the oh so painful wait is almost over ;_;

If this is indeed true, I'm fine because I have a fast enough connection to download it in about 1.5 hours.

Yes!

It's not going to take that long to download at all.

I have one

1) cant choose where to download preloads other than your main Steam directory

2) even if I could preload to the SSD I would need double the space the game occupies for it to unpack / decompress

I have a 120gb drive with the OS on it

Neither of these things are true. I was able to preload both The Witcher 3 and Arkham Knight on the same SSD. (also only having like 3gb of space on the SSD when arkham knight was unencrypted)

They changed the way preloads unpacked recently. Now it deletes data as it goes, it used to not delete data until the very end, so you'd need double the space.

Will release on PC on tuesday at 7PM GMT+2, you can check out the steam page for the game.

This no preload thing is going to feel massive to some steam cdn servers.

see the tweet above. we can play early, provided we can download the game quick enough.

Yeah, that's why it actually works out better for those of us with an okay connection, since we have the possibility of playing on August 31st since downloads can start on the 31st at 10am PT / 18pm BST.

Like I said it will suck for those that can't download 30gb in less than several hours

I don't think we will be able to play it early. The first tweet says "So your saying that people can play it on August 31 as long as it's Sept. 1 in New Zealand?"

The way I interpret is that only people in New Zealand will be able to download it first. Where as if your on the East Coast of the U.S., you have to wait until 1 pm on Sept. 1st. Unless of course you can use VPN to download early.

ITT: Google searches for NZ VPN spikes to an all time high

So wait I can start downloading at lunch time ish on the 31st? Steam does remote downloads through the app right?

It would be done by the time I got home from work on the 31st if I could indeed start installing around lunchtime.

And that doesn't make sense when he confirms in the last tweet that you can play it hours before the release of the console version and prior to that even states 10am PT. Why even make the distinction?

Probably wont even work right anyway. It will fall the same fate as Batman

Arkham Knight has been an edge case. Poor performance is typical of Japanese developed games in many cases of "new to PC" developers sure, yet GZ was clearly very well done. I'm perfectly happy to take the "gamble" on a preorder when refunds are easily available should the worst happen.

What doesn't seem clear to me if they have different times for regions and we will have to go through proxy to activate early.

Im in EU and steam countdown shows clearly Tuesday @7pm. Don't think its going to change.

People should have asked for Steam preload when Konami invited feature requests for the PC version, I guess ... The fault lies with ourselves?

Anyone know when will the pre-load start DL'ing for PS4? Thinking of buying digital and cancelling the physical pre-order to avoid waiting a half a day for UPS, then passing out at 2AM anyway and failing to binge.

What is this nonsense?
It's a fair point. GZ was fine but it's a different game. Same engine and everything just doing a lot more. I don't have any faith in PC ports until you hear how it is once it comes out. Gta5 had problems even if max Payne 3 was a great port. Some people were saying that 5 would be ok since 3 was good.

Yeah, that last tweet is throwing me off. I'll try to tweet him to clarify if it's a global release at 12 am in New Zealand's time zone.

I haven't seen the Steam Store page update yet, although that change at the last second.

the steam countdown isn't gospel. i've seen games launch earlier than the countdown plenty of times before.

it seems what robert is saying that the game will indeed be available to those who pre-purchased as soon as it is midnight of the 1st in new zealand. if you didn't pre-purchase, you need to wait until TPP goes on sale separately on steam (as it is currently only part of that gz/tpp pack) at 10PT on the 1st.

It's a fucking stupid point. Did you read what he said?

It will fall the same fate as Batman

Even disregarding the insinuation that its more likely than not that PC games don't work at launch (which is a million miles away from the truth), it's a really stupid thing to say.

Also, GTA5 was an excellent port.

I get what you mean though; I haven't seen a game do this in a very long time

Here what I tweeted to Robert Peeler:

"@KarlDilkington7: @popcicle So is it a global release at 12 am in New Zealand's time zone? As in, U.S. East coast download on Aug. 31 at 12pm."

Hopefully he will answer me.

Edit: *in Kiefer Sutherland's voice* Damn it! * I forgot to mention Steam...I gon don fucked up now.

I've never seen the same steam game change it's release date if you have it in your library or not.

I think he worded it wrong or we got it wrong and we are going to have to go through proxy wether we preorder or not. And I'm ok with that.

Edit: Can we please not talk performance in here? Not the place nor the time.

It's absolutely not a fair point to assume that this game will suffer the same fate as Arkham Knight on PC, as though AK on PC was the norm for ambitious PC ports and not an outlier. GTA V had very few problems on PC those first few weeks, all things considered (and is generally considered a fantastic port so I just plain have no idea where you're coming from there), especially relative to games like AK or its predecessor, GTA IV. And while Ground Zeroes doesn't go as far on a technical level as Phantom Pain will, it's still a solid reference point that shows that the engine itself has no problems working just fine on PC, which is more than we can say about AK.

Seriously, these AK comparisons coming up after every single newsdrop about a PC port are bullshit, at best.

All of this. Heed the bolded.

i think alien isolation launched a whole day earlier than it should have, if you want an example.

we'll see if robert responds with some more concise information later on, but i don't think we'll need a VPN

I thought this would just mean that you would have to download the game on the day of release before playing? Which would mean a difference of minutes or hours.

What else is involved then? Some people seem crushed.

some people don't have great internet connections

Nothing else is involved, that's just it. But some people have terrible internet speeds and it can take them a day+ to download something like 28GB of data.

Same with the evil within, launched at 12am Euro time instead of 10am.
