Regal Cinemas starts checking bags ...

So, what are they gonna do exactly when they find a gun in someone's bag?

I'd love to see how that conversation goes down.

Not sure what to think about that. I assume it's going to be the regular cinema staff doing it, which means it'll probably be half-assed. As was said above, illusion.

Makes me glad I live in a place where I don't have to worry about being shot in the cinema AND I'm allowed to take my own food in.

I don't carry bags when I go the movies, so this won't affect me.

I went to a movie recently, in Boston.

Some kid left a backpack on the seat next to me and tried to run off. Before he left, I grabbed him and told him to take his bag with him. He declined, so I pushed him to the ground and he grabbed it and ran out.

That's the shit I deal with seeing fucking Chappie.

You're kidding yourself if you don't think every other major movie chain won't be soon doing the same.

Regal's done lots of dumb shit that other chains haven't, though. And the rise of places like Movie Tavern/Alamo Drafthouse would be stunted by something like this

Wait this isn't normal? They checked my friends backpack a couple of months ago when we watched jurassic world. It was the regal cinema in south beach

Paying $4-6 for a $1 box of candy (That can be found for .75 or .90 at Big Lots or on sale) is crazy and seedy. I'd rather pay more to be able to better bring my own stuff in, or even better, I'd pay for a real dining experience. Thankfully, there are a couple theatres like this near where I live.

Then eat before you go. Do you bring food into a symphony concert?

Also, my issue is not with sneaking things in, I've done it. It's with people getting pissed about it and making a scene. You broke a rule, let it go. I worked at a theatre and it was a pain in the ass.

This makes no sense. If a guy wants to shoot up a theatre, he'll kill the security guards then walk into the theatre and kill people.

If a guy wants to use a plane as a missile, he can't just kill a security guard and step immediately onto a plane. The security gate and boarding are super far apart.

Cool. Don't bring a bag to a theater then!

To be fair, I don't go to the theater much, maybe for one movie a year. So it won't be very hard to just abandon the idea entirely.

they say its for security but they just really just don't want you sneaking food in.

Yep. Was a single one of these shootings because they brought in a bag with a gun in it? No.

This is entirely a way to make people feel safe, get them to not bring outside food in, and to attempt an increase in sales. Using safety as a way to get people to do something has been working for years.

I work at a Regal theater in Texas, basically all they have us do is ask to open bags and take a peek inside, 90% of the time the coworkers don't even really check the bags so. We also installed security locks on the theater exit doors, so after 30 seconds of being open the alarm in the staff room goes off to go check and see what's going on.

seems like a bandaid solution, but also the only feasible one to deal with the apparently untouchable absurdity of it all

Food isn't sold to be eaten at a symphony concert. The analogy isn't appropriate. If you can purchase the same items or better for much less elsewhere then why not? And these are snacks we are talking about, not full blown meals.

Just saw your edit. Yes, getting pissy when you're caught is silly.

One of my employees and I were at Mc Donalds one day. Huge group of kinds came in and sat across from us. They all got up but left a random backpack on the floor in the middle of the walk way. The guy I was with spent 6 years in Afghanistan. He said shit like that freaked him out, so we got up and left. Never know anymore.

But I don't get it. If a gunman wanted to shoot up a theatre, he'd do it whether they check his bags or not. It's not like when the movie starts the theatre flies thousands of feet into the air and becomes a place where guns are more dangerous than on the ground.

So this

The move by Regal is a sign that the exhibition industry is concerned that more measures may be needed to insure that more attacks like the ones that took place this summer don’t become commonplace. The movie business was stunned after a gunman killed two patrons and himself during a showing of “Trainwreck” in Lafayette, La. last July. That attack was followed a week later by a separate incident in Nashville, Tenn., during which a hatchet- and pellet gun-wielding man unleashed pepper spray in a showing of “Mad Max: Fury Road.” He was later killed by police.

never happened?

Just food?

They've been doing this for ages in Manhattan. I don't give a shit. Regal has the shittiest, dirtiest theaters, with the worst seating layouts.

1. Its a lot less invasive than TSA
2. they are only checking for weapons and metallic objects.
3. This is going to be inevitable as long as gun culture is rampant.
If it was really about checking for weapons they would have people lift their shirts to show their waistbands as well.

this is really stupid

we are already wasting a shitload of money on the TSA to provide an illusion of safety, and now theyre thinking about doing it at theaters? a bag check doesn't bother me per se, but what does is what it can lead to going forward. plus, to be fair, it wouldn't really do shit to counter people who want to commit violent acts.

There goes me sneaking stuff in... God dammit second ammendment you're gonna make me buy overpriced candy.

All gunmen shoot up the cinemas asap?

It's a security measure. And not a big one considering the venue. Deal with it!

If it was really about checking for weapons they would have people lift their shirts to show their waistbands as well.

If it was really about checking for anything (cameras, food, etc) they would do that if they don't have a metal detector/scanner/paty downs. This is theatre (sorry).

Probably checking to make sure you don't smuggle in snacks. No, seriously. My friend was telling me about a theater that will ask to check your bag to make sure you don't take in outside snacks. I told her I'd probably just want a refund and walk out at that point. I know theaters make the majority of their money through food, but come on.

If this makes people feel better, more power to Regal. I mean if someone is going to go wild, they could just go in gun blazes and nothing changes. But I think the appearance of safety will put a lot of people at ease, and that's worth something. And these events are fairly rare, I wouldn't say it's an epidemic that requires any extreme changes on the part of the theaters. Since Aurora, they seem to be doing a good job with keeping the fire exits secure.

They should maybe add "suspicious-looking trenchcoats and flak jackets" to the list, along with bags. You, know, to cover all the bases. Never know what kind of candies people can hide in those.

How's this going to help? If someone is going to shoot up a theater, what's checking their bag going to accomplish? Them shooting up everyone around the door instead?

If this annoys you then start demand the societal changes needed to keep theater shootings from happening. Obviously companies are not gonna be happy having their brands attached to mass killings.

"In a recent survey by research group C4, nearly 50% of moviegoers said they would pay $1 or more extra to support additional security measures in theaters.

I guarantee Regal saw that part as the tipping point. They're going to charge you for searching your bag.

The employees who have to search your bag won't get any of that money, of course.

Fuck that. I see something dangerous, I call it out. You could be the most oppressed minority or majority. Don't do stupid shit in public.

Don't have time for idiots. I'm with you.
