Metal Gear Solid V: Gamescom Gameplay Demo

Teaser comment related to my review this afternoon: TPP is the first game I can think of where marathoning the series AFTER playing TPP is better (IMO) than marathoning before playing TPP.

Can't even imagine how. You didn't have the time to test that theory.

One would assume the game has some revelations that make you look at some of the events of the older games from a fresh perspective.

It happened for
MGS3 codec team, and Ocelot

I hope we find out how alerts (instant or not like GZ) when the reviews drop tonight.

I'm still debating between the PS4 and PC versions of the game and that "feature" or lack thereof will probably end up determining my purchase.

Hard for me to accept that as a reason to replay anything. I'm convinced Kojima hasn't had much planned if anything, from the start of MGS. Even if we get some big revelation or twist it's a patch job at best.

Everyone brings this up but everytime MGS4 gets brought up it gets shutter on meaning that those 2 gaf awards must be because people thought nothing else was out at the time, not because it was good.

No it means there is a loud minority that pops up and feels the need to shit on mgs4 the second it gets mentioned.

The only thing I don't like is if a guard yells 'Contact', even without a radio, alert mode triggers. He should have to reach for his radio and use it before the alarm is triggered.

But in a real military base, if someone yelled 'Contact' the entire base would instantly go into alert. It's realistic.

It's possible he's played all the games in the series and feels that after playing this and then doing a marathon of all games everything just ties together.

I hope your not trying to say was a barren year, cause that's not a smart thing to say. Not only did mgs4 realse then but so did all these games: fallout 3, GTA 4, dead space, left dead, sup[er smash brothers brawl, gears of war 2, and more. It beat all of those twice, it is a great game period.

Yea that's why the military makes everyone enable reflex mode in their game options whenever they do covert ops to counter it.

(Realism in of itself is a poor excuse for a video game, especially one where you can do things like use a wormhole to capture guards.)

Left Dead was definitely my goty that year

If someone yelled "Contact!" soldiers in the vicinity would be alerted. They might call in that a fellow soldier has seen an enemy, and an alert should be issued. But it wouldn't be instantaneous. It would propagate out from the first person until someone called it in on the radio.

So if a soldier yells "Contact!" and is taken down, and two other soldiers hear but are taken out before being able to report it to command, then there would be no alert. But it doesn't work like that in Ground Zeroes, and seemingly in The Phantom Pain also.

I love MGS4. I love the whole series in fact. But there is no doubt in my mind that MGS4 is just a damn mess. Partly because the fans wanted MGS2 explained and partly because Kojima backed himself into a corner to try and tie up ever loose end.

TPP will be the first game that retroactively makes MGS4 a good game.

Can't get any better than masterpiece. So I highly doubt it.

Everyone brings this up but everytime MGS4 gets brought up it gets shutter on meaning that those 2 gaf awards must be because people thought nothing else was out at the time, not because it was good.

It's actually just a handful of people around here who are very vocal about it.

The "You can't know anything unless you have done it yourself" school of thought is pretty lame imo, some things are easily enough inferred.

I'm just saying that it's a bold claim. There are tons of things, even if just considering gameplay things like reverting from open world stealth to MG1, that I'm not sure are being considered. I imagine you'd have to do it before making such a bold claim. Moving from The Phantom Pain to MG1 (or even MGS1) entails more than just plot, and in my head I imagine that transition would be a lot more harsh than MG1 -> MG2, or MGS1 -> MGS2 (etc).

Do people honestly believe that MGS4 is less than a good game (good meaning in the 7/10 range)? Or is it a case of "this is not my favorite thing so I hate it."

It is also the only mainline game in the franchise that remained exclusive. Take a wild guess. ;)

That's assuming they are using a very old school com system. While this game takes place during the cold war, it also has technology that wouldn't be present at the time, so I wouldn't be surprised if they had something that was more akin to the semi-open com systems that we use now fairly often. It would not be hard for someone to "radio" in the contact call in a matter of seconds.

It's a middling game in a franchise of great ones.

According to you, according to basiclly every other way of grading a game it's at least in the upper 80's

Correction: Not "everything" falls into place, but a lot sure does. This is also assuming you like marathoning based on story order, not order of release.

I figure there will be some things not explained. Such is life. Nice to know a lot falls into place though. That's all I really want.

MGSV will be a bazillion times better stealth game than MGS4 and PW combined and that alone will elevate it up the TRUE RANKINGS even if the story is the wettest turd of them all.

Or on the other spectrum, the vocal hates were too lazy to vote in the GOTY thread.

Nope, I grantee every one who hates MGS 4 and was currently a member voted, hell for the second vote you could actually anti-vote against the game and it still one.

So is GTA 4, and that's slightly better than MGS4, but also middling.

MGS4 is fundamentally flawed in both story and game design.

A game in the upper 80's is middling to you? Even taking account for better prequels that's crazy talk.

MGS3 = MGS > MGS4 > MGS2 > Peace Walker > MG2:SS > PO > MG

EDIT: I used to put MGS2 and MGS4 as equal. But I've been replaying MGS2 lately and Big Shell is just a plan boring setting.

Considering only 2 out of 5 acts are good gameplay wise, and on top of that has the stupidest and most childish plot in the series, it's indeed less than good, in my opinion.

Right.

MGS4 is a game with a bad story and incompetent game design (Act's 1 & 2 vs. Act's 3, 4 and 5 is ridiculous).

Peace Walker is a game with a bad story and good game design, but not a great stealth game.

I had more fun with Ground Zeroes alone than I did with both of those.

2017 it'll be five years since we ran that poll, wonder where MGS5 will slide into.

"something something best gameplay in the series but why no cutscenes something something MGS3 > MGS5 >> MGS1 > MGS2 >> MGS4 >> PW"

I had more fun with Ground Zeroes alone than I did with both of those.

GZ > MGS4? As a video game?

Well, yeah

Or on the other spectrum, the vocal hates were too lazy to vote in the GOTY thread.

Well you can't really vote for what you hate, it just gets left out. If there was a poll of hate or love it would be close its polarizing. But tons of people, including myself think it's a great game. To think MGS4 is anything even less than good is total insanity, it puts so many games to shame with what it does with its gameplay and amazing scripted sequences. And despite the story having issues most games don't come close to being such an emotional ride.

I can agree with this.

I was a lazy one who didn't vote for either.
I like MGS4.

I mainly meant by voting for other games.
