Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain PC performance thread

So, my download on Steam just restarted from scratch. Dont know what the fuck happened. Closed Steam last night properly, and then this happened. I was at 16 GB downloaded. :/ Has anyone faced this issue?
Yeah. Tried fixing it by moving the files from the Download to the MGS_TPP directory, but that only caused all files to be deleted when I tried to start the installation again.

I sucked it up and redownloaded from scratch :/

Is it just me or does HBAO+ have a much larger performance impact in this game than in, say, The Witcher 3? I feel like there performance impact was negligible but here I lose a good few frames when it's enabled.

Yeah. I don't think the game is that PC friendly to be honest. I mean it is fairly well optimized as a cross platform game but as a PC game in its own right it doesn't compare to other PC only games that have a dedicated PC developed engine. I mean I can play Witcher 3 @1440p with most settings at their highest and get 60fps most of the time. And it is a better looking game, not that MGSV is shabby or anything.

Game has been puzzling me the past day or so since I unlocked the FPS. I have a 5960x @ 4Ghz and SLI Titan X. Playing at 1440p I'm getting a constant 75-80ish fps at Motherbase. Similar performance in busy areas in Afghanistan (Helicopters, D-Walkers, lots of enemies, etc). Honestly I expected a lot better after hearing how optimized it is, etc.

I am wondering if I have a bottleneck and something is wrong with my CPU but I'm really not sure. Both GPUs are only hitting about 76% usage. I have not noticed any problems with other CPU intensive games like Witcher 3 and GTAV. I played 150+ hours of W3 and my framerate was always above 60, usually between 70-80 fps in the wilderness. Witcher 3 is by far the superior game graphically. Of course it had some stuttering which MGS barely has any.

I don't really know what the deal is here but I'm just gonna forget about it for now and play the game.

I got a Nexus Mods site created for MGSV:TPP.

My mod link

I've updated my DS4 button icons mod for TPP. DS3 version and other fluff (lines in the options menu) coming when I can force myself to stop playing for a while.

I've made a quick mod here to play as Quiet. It replaces the Solid Snake costume from MGS1:

https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B3x_yY0gnj5sS2xaRkZaLUUyTEU

Just be sure to follow the instructions properly. You'll need to work a little as I didn't feel like uploading a 1.5Gb file so instead I'm explaining how to extract, replace a file in and repack the archive.

You two might want to submit your mods to NexusMods as well now, since there is a site for it.

Thanks for "Easy to Install" package, will definitely check this out. What kind FPS hit you are seeing on your setup [what it's?] when using Extended Extra High settings? I assume Extreme is done with "1 FPS is 1 screenshot per second" mentality :D

It varies depending on which settings you decide to turn up. If all are at high, then In general I sit right around 60fps with an occasional drop using a GTX970 + i5 2400k. I actually think CPU may be a limiting factor for me because when framerate drops my GPU is often not even fully taxed.

I've noticed a subtle quirk and was wondering if anybody has seen the same. Basically I've lowered my settings to give me a very solid vsynced 50fps ( im using a 50hz display ). Using an ingame frame counter, I can see the game is running at 50fps without any drops. If I stand still and look around, its smooth as butter. But if im moving while looking, the game stutters. At no point does the frame counter drop below 50.

Anybody have any idea whats going on?

Disable camera shake. I had the exact same thing at locked 60. Its not even framedrops, just the camera shake looking weird.

I have had a similar situation as well.
Unlocking the game's FPS and turning down the resolution while trying to get 120fps just does not work on my rig for example. My CPU utilization does not go up really and my GPU is starved of utilization (same is happening for you but just on a different scale). I mentioned to you before that I thought you were CPU bottlenecked, then someoen mentioned the SLI profile could be less than advantageous (which would be weird, because MGS GZ scaled near perfectly for me when I had Tri-SLI... and scaled incredibly well IMO when I unlocked the framerate in that game).

I am starting to think the game may be... API limited :0

Anyone else's GPU just getting totally bumfucked by this game?

I constantly see 95+ GPU usage followed by high temps followed by throttling unless I crank my fan curve something fierce--had to set it to 80% earlier to keep up with the game...

On Win8.1, 980ti + i7960 OC'd to 3.8 ghz, settings to max and DSR'ing to 1440p

Has anyone else noticed that the AF is weird in this game? This is with Texture Filtering as high as it goes.

mgsvtpp_2015_09_07_13_35_21_999_by_realghostvids-d98ofug.jpg

AF is enabled by an application on a per texture basis, some textures may not be using AF, it's completely up to designers to decide. Try forcing AF in the driver - that should put the same AF level on all textures.

Is it just me or does HBAO+ have a much larger performance impact in this game than in, say, The Witcher 3? I feel like there performance impact was negligible but here I lose a good few frames when it's enabled.

Maybe it's more expensive when forced via the driver, while The Witcher 3 has native HBAO+ support.

Yeah it seems to, I don't use it myself for that reason.

Get an AIO cooler or go watercooling :P my Titan X sits at a lovely 1540 core non stop when gaming these days where as it would throttle like crazy before

Is this something you would recommend?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814998105

I have a reference board, but it's the SuperClocked EVGA. I wouldn't think that make any difference (if anything it should help more, lol), but it's worth asking before I pull the trigger on it.

EDIT: Weird that my link looks that way vs how it shows up in the post screen as a standard NE link o_O?

I am personally considering the the AIO hybrid cooler for the TItan X from EVGA. Just need to make sure it is in stock is all!

Sorry to sound ignorant but what setting exactly is this mod changing?? I assume the lighting?

Level of detail [shadows rendered, quality of lightning, objects rendered etc.] is improved at all distances from and around player. Lightning and shadows looks to get most noticeable boost in quality.

What's the performance hit? I'm already scraping the raggedy edge of being able to hold 60 most of the time, at vanilla Extra High.

After setting effects to high the only drops I get now are at nightime fighting enemies where it can go into the 50s, gtx980 1440p game runs fantastic overall and having a great time with it :)

just started playing.

holding 60, 780ti, 3570k stock, @ 1080p. Everything maxed and hbao plus. This game feels amazing to control. it just makes me happy moving around and shit, hard to describe.

Or you can get the NZXT G10 bracket. That way you can use an off the shelf AIO cooler. This has the benefit that you can probably re-purpose it in the future.

Anyone else noticed a severe framedrop when getting close to Quiets jump/dash smoke? Whenever she dashes by close to me my fps goes down to single digits, not that it's often enough to be a problem , but it's a bit jarring.

It certainly has a huge Impact in this game. If I activate it I have the same perfomance at 1440p as I have at 4k without it :/.

Yes, everyone does have that with Effects on Extra High. It can also happen when you throw yourself to the ground (only noticeable if you barely reach 60fps), fultoning stuff or from the smoke of damaged vehicles.

I would be interested in such a video.

I made a quick and dirty comparison showing the effects setting and how it affects particles and shadowing on particles.

Link to video here by clicking on the image:
!

My take on it:
low and high use the same shadow filtering for the particle shadows. High uses a few more sprites.

Very high uses a softfadow filter on the particle shadows and uses a LOT more sprites. It does look quite a bit better though.

To give a short description, every step is an incremental increase in that settings specific rendering distance, or quality.

For example, from Low to High, shadows will render further out. From High to ExtraHigh, shadows will render even further, and get a resolution bump.

The largest performance impact is lighting on Extra high.

At Low (original vanilla Extra High setting) the game will render 12 shadow casting static objects, 4 shadow casting dynamic objects, and 512 lights total. At Extra High, it will render 32 static shadow casting objects, 24 dynamic shadow casting objects, 1024 lights, render them at 4x the distance, and won't render the majority of the lights below the second LoD level (as opposed to by default being only 1/2 step).

Models should render at 8x the distance at extra high.

Stuff like that. I'm also looking into making the reflections more visible.

What's the performance hit? I'm already scraping the raggedy edge of being able to hold 60 most of the time, at vanilla Extra High.

I've found that during daytime I can actually hold Extra High for all of the settings on my 970. Its during night time when a lot of lights get rendered that Extra High Lighting will take about 30-40 frames off. With Lighting set to High I can hold mostly 60. I'm actually considering tweaking the config more to make Extra High even more for shadows and model rendering, to better match with the extreme lighting demands.

I made a super easy to use extreme graphics mod.

new_extra_high_settings_cropped_by_aloooo81-d98owgz.gif

Download link: Without FXAA | With FXAA

Install instructions:
Extract this zip to your "MGS_TPP\master" folder.
Run the "Run This - Extra Extra High Settings.bat" file.
Launch the game.

Here is the new settings configuration with the file.

Low settings = Original Extra High
High Settings = Playable extended settings
ExtraHigh Settings = Extreme settings for screenshots

If your PC has everything maxed out and has performance to spare, then you should probably check it out. Keep in mind that ExtraHigh is VERY taxing and you most likely will not hold 60fps with it.

How do I change to which one I want to use?

What is the best way to measure VRM temps? Is there a sensor there even?

Some cards don't have sensors on the VRM, but on the ones that do, GPU-Z is a good bet.

The reason I suggested it is because simply zip-tieing an AIO to the GPU, means that the previous heatsink that was there can no longer cool the VRM transistors, (unless the card has a separate heatsink for the VRM).

The G10 bracket is good because it also has a fan on it to cool the VRM and the memory modules.

GTX970 playing 1080p & 60 FPS, everything on max using DSR @ 2103 x 1183.

If I overclock the 970 above a reference 980 in terms of clock speeds I can use DSR @ 2351 x 1323 for 60FPS.

Not bad. I do enjoy the game visually on PC. Glad I am able to play this version. :)

OH so I just change it in the in-game settings? Sorry but normally I would have to change settings in some .ini or something ;)

Yep, I reassigned all of the Low settings to match the original ExtraHigh, reassigned High to extended settings, and ExtraHigh to extreme settings.

Had no internet access pretty much since release and my download should be ready by tomorrow. Seems lots of stuff has been discovered but unfortunately the OP hasn't been updated from what I can tell.

I'll make sure to use the following:
- FPS unlock (no side-effects for gamepad players from what I can tell? no more sticky throwables?)
- HBAO+ in Nvidia CP
- Force AF in Nvidia CP (judging from the blurry image several posts above)
- Apparently they still have FXAA coupled to a post processing preset and there's no setting for SMAA, MSAA etc. huh? I wonder if I can still squeeze in some DSR after HBAO+... but I guess I'll find out!

Btw to those with download issues: It's probably the update download bug. If there's an update to the game you're downloading and you pause and resume (or close and reopen Steam etc) after the update is released, you'll have to redownload basically the whole thing; minus dependencies I think. I've been able to circumvent this by disabling auto updates for the game in question. Have paused and resumed TPP multiple times since release and it's still downloading fine so far. *knocks on wood*

Just as a bit of reference, HBAO+ causes some severe sudden frame rate drops in certain instances (In the single digits at times) but there's also a certain cutscene where you'll get a sustained single digit FPS almost the entire time.

So if you have sudden issues, might keep an eye on it. That's on a GTX 970 at 1080p.

Is there any change to the Ambient Occlusion setting?

On a gtx 670 and i7 2700k am I going to see significant difference from the ps4 version in shadows and draw distances?

I went with ps4 because of this but I'm thinking about buying both versions.

Ah! That's what that was, happened a few times on the intro area, thought it was reflections.

Which one was that?

In other news, I've played through almost all of the game and updated my comments on reflections: http://www.geforce.com/whats-new/gu...gear-solid-v-the-phantom-pain-post-processing

TLDR: Very few uses, lower quality than in Ground Zeroes, barely affected by Post Processing or any other setting, always enabled.
