Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain PC performance thread

So I haven't played in a couple of days and now I get back into it my FPS has been cut to an annoying extent, using the exact options I used before (I tried lower settings too) I am getting 40-45 FPS whereas before it was a pretty much solid 60FPS with the occasional pretty much unnoticeable dip.

Has anyone else experienced this? I presume it is to do with new patches fucking everything up, I was really looking forward to playing today but I refuse to have worse performance.

yes, I still have my constant 60 fps at 1440p but, there was one mission where framerate would go down to 55ish for no apparent reason.

Performance has been great thus far.
BUT there's been something bugging me for a while:
Sometimes while playing, I get these seemingly random freezes. As in the entire game just freezes for 1 second or so, then it goes back to normal.

It's really annoying, and I have no idea what could it be. I close Chrome and everything else open before playing and still get it. At first I thought it was because I was downsampling (1440p) but it still happened with lower resolutions (1680x1050).

Anyone here had something similar?

GTX 970
8GB RAM
i5 4690
W10

Also the PC was recently(a month or so) formatted so... yeah.

Same problem. Mentioned it earlier in this thread and still nothing that fixes it. It also seems random. Sometimes it'll happen, sometimes it won't.

Have the same issue. Another thing that annoys me is at random times my framerates take a huge tank dropping from around 50fps to a stutter, prolly related to the game loading in textures or something; not really a big issue.

I also have been experiencing frame drops when before there were none. 670, new build. Not game breaking, but definitely noticeable when compared to my experience before.

I'm not sure if this is the same kind of 1 second stuttering that you're getting but you can try the stuff in the list, and the DDU fresh install to see if it helps at all.

My bad its Nvidia, their drivers just are sporadic in their functioning for me. I hope the next AMD cards are good, I'll certainly be switching.

I've just started playing, but I can't play more than ~30 minutes without the game crashing with this error:

Has anyone else experienced it?

Was happening to me with the Modded settings installed.

Was happening to me with the Modded settings installed.

Had the mod settings installed too and some crazy lighting effects started appearing over the mountains then I had a crash to desktop every time. All I did was "verify game cache" in steam and it sorted it for me xD

So alo81, After removing the mod, the crashing stopped.

I don't know what it was that was causing crashing, but I can't use the mod till it's fixed.

yeah it caused crashes to the point of being unplayable for me as well. Too bad, I'd love to disable FXAA at least.

Just glancing at some posts above me and seeing there was a patch that killed performance, correct?

My current setup is as follows:

i5 2500k @ 4.5
16gb DDR3
GTX 970 OC

And at times I am hitting mid to low 40s at 1440p and everything maxed out. I even lowered some things like Post Processing and Particles to high but still not getting locked 60fps and kinda bothering me.

I am experiencing repeated crashes, to the point where I can no longer seem to continue the game. Is there a way to disable the modded settings?

Changed to high only settings and seems to have fixed it for now.

Which settings exactly does the mod affect? Seems like it shouldn't affect Textures and stuff, right?5

That's really strange. I'll look into it. If you'd want to help me debug it, would you be able to install the mod, but put all the settings to low, and see if you run into that crash again?

If not, it's probably a bug with how I've configured one of the higher settings, if it does, then it's probably a bug with the QAR tool and outside of my control.

Can you tell me what mission it was?

Those are my specs, well I haven't stuck to a OC yet since my 970 was factory overclocked to where it stays at 1417MHz, but what little I played earlier I didn't have any issues but I'm also not playing at 1440p, I did notice however that my VRAM usage skyrocketed from where it was before but now I can't remember if that's something I noticed this morning or yesterday. =\

I haven't seen it full-screen, but I have seen some shadows behave like that at a distance. Not sure what's doing it. Might just be something inherent to the engine in my case, it's not nearly as bad as what you've got there.

Does it only happen in certain places under certain conditions? I did have a card that wasn't ramping up its fans during gameplay, it fried itself to a crisp and I didn't even know it. And it was doing shit like that right before it died completely.

For what it's worth, I haven't noticed any performance drops on my end. But I'm running 1080p with 970 so I'm not knocking the upper limits of my card. So if there was a performance drop, I probably wouldn't have noticed.

Put Lighting at High to fix those drops. Its the biggest performance hog for me at 1440p besides Effects.

So I changed the res to 1080, and changed the lighting, shadows, post processing and effects to high and still getting between 40s to high 50s. Not really sure what is going on. This is some what bothering me now haha. Thanks again for the replies. :)

Something else going on, methinks.. I'm getting performance like that on a 680, with everything maxxed out and HBAO+.

Weird, I'm getting drops to 30ish but only when there's a Dust-Effect happening, like Quiet sprinting by, those can even go down to 20ish, and that on a Titan X at 1600p DSR.
Also getting Screentearing all over the place for no apparent reason, it always seems to happen when changing location, and stops after a bit
Fraps telling me 60fps all the time while the screen tears apart tho.. weird.

I am not sure if the source files have access to shader parameters, but is it possible at all to edit the shader files? Higher resolution depth of field would be the first thing I would do.

I don't know what has happened to my performance. I have the framerate unlocked but in most cases it's sits around 60 with some actual dips below. My GPU usage is terrible, it never exceeds 50% on either card. Yesterday, I was above 100 fps easily in the same situations. This is on an i7 5820K @ 4.3 Ghz and SLI GTX 980 tis. If I disable SLI the game crashes before the menu.

Edit:

Well I got it to launch with SLI disabled but the performance is pretty much the same with dips into the 50s. This is at 1080p. I don't know what's going on.

You are definitely not the first person describing degraded performance with bad GPU usage as of late. Something happened to some people.. I am not sure what.

Some really weird graphics kerfuffle, fixed it with a change of resolution just in case anyone gets a similar issue.

Same issue on my end, seemingly at random. It starts as a subtle issue after playing for a while and then gets more noticeable as time goes on.

Also been having issues with seemingly random crashes, but that may have been related to my overclock as TPP hasn't been the only game that's randomly crashing on me. Otherwise the port's great - some slight stuttering when it's loading up a new part of the map, but nothing unbearable.

I don't know what to do. I've reinstalled my drivers, tried HBAO+ off, SLI off, Gsync off, online mode, offline mode. Nothing has any impact the performance is the same no matter what.

Performance has taken a dive and for no apparent reason. CPU and GPU usage are ridiculously low. GPU usage is so low that it's not even running at full clockspeed. CPU temps are barely above idle temps.

Try verifying the game cache if you have not, also make sure the game and your comp is set to full performance in the power options of your GPU and otherwise.
This happened to my brother as well and I am not sure why.

Anyone know why the game stutters like crazy if you use Steam Big Picture Mode? Game will have a ton of stutters when something is happening on steam, like a friend logging on or recieving a msg.

Thanks, I did verify my cache and nothing changed. I ran 3DMark Firestrike to verify it wasn't something global on my machine and both GPUs ran near 100% full clock speed (1443 Ghz) with my typical results. CPU usage and clocks where they should be.

Tested with Heaven as well. All was good. This is game specific from everything I can tell.

sure I'll reinstall it in a bit. It was crashing on Mother base a LOT and then I finally managed to leave and then it crashed twice in missions in Afganistan.

I'm going insane. Lost my download twice on Steam. When it finally downloaded fully, the game just vanished and is back in the 'INSTALL' category. It starts from the beginning when I click install.

What is going on here? Can anyone help?

Does anyone else get this weird like alt+tabbing occasionally in game? I don't know what's happening, I'm playing with an XB1 controller and occasionally the desktop comes up

The game doesn't crash or anything and I can alt tab back in but it's really annoying. Not sure what's causing it. I might disconnect my tablet while playing to see if that helps.

I just enabled Shadowplay to take a video and my performance suddenly improved drastically. GPU usage is still very low, below 40% on both cards fps is fluctuating while I'm standing still between 70-90fps but both GPUs are running at higher clock speeds. It's like the game itself isn't a big enough workload to kick the GPUs into full speed but with Shadowplay enabled it's enough.

Funny thing is the performance increases substantially (over 100fps) when I start moving, even while looking in the same direction. As soon as I stop and stand for a second the performance drops.

The only thing new I can think of that is different now is that I have my men on an online combat deployment but the performance is the same online or off.

Man I dont' know what the hell just happened but now my framerate is stuck at 25fps. No matter what I do it stays there doesn't really go above 30 when I was just playing at 60fps.
I dont' want to quit and restart this mission man..

Edit:NVM I fixed it. I think closing and reopening explorer.exe fixed it.

Update:

I went ahead and uninstalled my drivers and reinstalled it back and everything is running much smoother. So if you're experiencing slower than normal fps in all of your games, which I noticed, try that out.

This happens every time for me when I launch the game, haven't had it happen after launching it though.

OK, Alo, I been playing with Low mod settings for over an hour now with no issue... Just set it to high and we'll see how it goes.

Might have been the update that happened that caused issues with the already installed mod. Time will tell.

Anyone else get a strange frame dip first time you hit africa? The cutscene of snake getting out of the chopper was a slideshow but fine again once It hit gameplay. Really strange and the first time this has happened.

Didn't have any problems after the update.. played for a while this afternoon, everything hovered in the 50s around bases and such, solid 60 out in the open. Only dropped into the 40s when I tested out the particle effects by diving into the dirt in the shadow of a tree over and over again. I feel lucky to be getting this kind of performance (1080p maxxed) out of a GTX-680.
.

Alright going from mother base to the ACC just brings me to a black screen and nothing happens that's cool....
Sounds like a good patch so far

Yeah, happened to me more in Africa than Afghanistan. Even during gameplay in the open world I'd have some strange stuttering and pop-in just exploring the world. I had one cutscene in particular that ran at literally 1 fps for about 3 minutes. Good game, but PC performance is not as locked as I'd like, especially considering the hardware I run with.

HBAO+ seems to be doing this. It happens a few more times and even worse when it does.

I can't for the life of me figure out what's going on. In certain areas, such as the mansion in Africa, my FPS hovers around 52-54 when looking at the mansion.

And it hovers around that FPS no matter the resolution I set the game at (1080p, 1440p or 1800p). I also get weird stutters everytime I land from the helicopter and occasionally when I fulton soldiers.

GTX 980ti
16 GB RAM
3570k

Any help would be appreciated.

Lower the special effects option from extra high to high, although your video card should be able to handle that. *shrug*

4k maxed settings 60fps locked no drops

1600p max settings 110fps max 80ish average

1440p max settings 130fps max 118 average

1080p max settings 168fps max 147 average

I didn't do bench in the same place, like I didn't run the same place over and over again for each resolution so I guess it isn't an accurate bench but still well optimized.

Apparently this game is incredible optimized or incredible simple, even though my rig isn't exactly budget.

CPU: 5960x@5.6Ghz/little devil phase change
GPU: 980ti kingpin@1690/2008
RAM: 32 GB@3200Mhz
Installed drive: Intel 730 PCIe SSD 1.2TB

Edit: should note I'm not even on game ready drivers, in fact I'm on maybe 1-2 month old drivers I wonder how updating would affect performance.
