honestly ocelot forgetting about big boss seems ridiculous seeing how this is the lesser Ocelot ruse in the entire series, unless we're supposed to believe he also brainwashed himself into believing Volgin was his real boss, then Liquid was his real boss, then Solidus was his real boss, etc.

Hell even when he brainwashed himself into being Liquid it was a completely stupid plan because he more or less let a ghost of Liquid take control of his body with no failsafe except "beat the shit out of me".

The real takeaway is that the Patriots, for all their information control and AI are still incapable of not being tricked by really really stupid shit

Ocelot's character is the most nonsensical thing in the series, really. I'm just going to assume his real character is the man who does things like this

And he DGAF about anything except Big Boss. He's kind of psychopathic in several ways, not just in how he tortures people and is so good at acting and lying (even to himself) but how overly complicated his plans are.

Ocelot comes off as a completely different character in every single metal gear game.

I mean I know that his character is supposed to be developing as the series progresses but he still comes off as maybe the most inconsistent character in video games.

Its almost as if his character was never meant to be more than a goofy cowboy man that appears in a single game.

- Is what I would say if it wasn't for MGS1's post credits sequence

we all got rused by liquid, it was a great performance, made me truly believe it was him in MGS4.

Which makes sense, as he's always pretending to be someone else.

The shame is in The Phantom Pain he is either pretending to be someone of no discernible personality or he is genuinely that vacuous (which also sort of makes sense).

I think you're right. I think the post credits MGS conversation was just throw in there for shits and giggles. Kojima probably had no idea if the game was ever going to get a sequel.

Just realized this, but what went into creating the character of Liquid Ocelot is essentially the same as how they created Venom Snake. Thinking you're someone you're not and all that.

except Liquid Ocelot was amazing, Venom Snake also lost all his personality in the process.

What went into creating the character of Liquid Ocelot was that Kojima realise he'd Royally fucked up by killing the main antagonist of the series in the first (not really but come on) game.

Not only that but the fans absolutely loved Liquid, so he decided to reintroduce him in the stupidest ways he knew; ghost man in a severed arm.

He later realised that was also a bad idea, and changed it to lol self-hypnosis.

Ocelot as a character is the perfect example of showing why Kojima never intended for Metal Gear to be what it became.

He wanted to finish after MGS1 for christ sake. it's now 17 years later

i still believe liquid possesing ocelot via his own arm was the best liquid, he fiddled everyone, stole a metal gear, almost killed all the Snakes left, then went off to kill the Patriots, but not before creating the biggest PMC empire in the world.

I really liked the "Truth" tapes at the end. I wish a lot of the tapes were fit into the game as cutscenes.

For some reason hearing:

"Adam, I'm counting on you"

Was really cool. A glimpse of Big Boss and Ocelot's relationship from that little sentence.

Foxdie wasn't developed to kill Anderson: It was developed to kill Decoy Octopus along with the rest of Foxhound.

BB killed Zero largely out of pity since at that point he was a veg. Zero never wanted BB dead, and still cared about him. He just was angry that BB didn't follow his lead and wanted to bring him back in line.

Oh shit, I forgot that detail about Decoy Octopus :o

I wonder if Ocelot and Miller thought Venom was acting really weird (since they both at the time thought he was the real BB)

"Why is boss hardly talking anymore? Why doesn't he call me Adam? He seems oddly merciful".

Guess they chalked it up to 9 year coma and a horn messing him up.

If Miller doesn't know the entire game then that means the post-credits conversation is after the game, but how does Ocelot regain the memory of the real Big Boss then?

Here's another dumb fucking thing for you: they go to all this trouble to create a Big Boss body double (more than that even, somehow--did they play tapes about Big Boss's life in the medic's comatose ears for nine years or something?) in order to protect the real Big Boss, and then what do they do?

Have the real Big Boss, the GUY THEY WENT THROUGH ALL THIS TO PROTECT IN THE FIRST PLACE, stay there in the hospital, IN THE BED RIGHT NEXT TO THE DECOY. WHO EVERYONE WOULD BE COMING TO KILL.

Like, okay, the plan called for the fake to survive and make it out of there alive (did it?), but surely they should've had literally anybody else that was able there to protect him instead of the guy HE was created to keep out of the line of fire?

Big Boss was already mostly healed, why the hell was he still there agghhhhhhh

Now that the game is out, what is Kojima doing until his contract is up in December?

Hopefully being ashamed of his words and deeds.

Obviously working on the Chapter 4 DLC coming this this Christmas. All the signs are there! Just look at this website! www.kojimalivesandismakingdlcsrslyguys.gov

Yup, the whole body double thing reeeeeeeally falls apart when you give it more than 10 seconds of thought. BB stayed in the hospital with V, to make sure he got out alive. But why even do that? Why not just wake up, leave, and get another person to be your double? Or just go off and do your thing like you planned to while the world thinks you're dead anyway. Why come back to life only so you can go off and do something while your double takes the heat? Why create the heat in the first place and get an entire hospital killed? Why not just wake up, get better, leave then stay in the shadows until MG1.

I don't understand the prologue being conceived of with Big Boss as Ishmael in mind. I feel like that was a twist that came in after-the-fact.

It's so dumb. Their escape plan was "Shit, let's hijack an ambulance". Like, if you know people are going to come to kill Medic Boss, and you have years to plan an escape, you can do better than that. Shit, make a second body double just to get killed so that body double 1 can sneak out of the back of the building.

Avoiding Konami execs with clever disguises.

wait

was there a single moment in this game where someone was monologuing at us while jarringly distracting real life footage and/or cool infomatics played?

Goddamnit.

The impression that I got was that BB wasn't laying in the bed next to Venom for 9 years. He was monitoring him and watching over him but not physically in the bed the whole time.

I don't think that was their original plan. I think the original plan went up in smoke when Volgin and Psycho Mantis showed up. I mean you can plan for years but it's hard to account for two super humans that you were previously unaware of showing up.
