PS4 Japanese price cut: 34,980 yen (~5000 yen price cut) starting October 1st

Incoming $349 USD?

This is for the base model. The previous price was 39,980 yen.

It's been $350 in the US unofficially, hasn't it? Maybe I've just seen it for that low during sales or something.

Will be interesting to see whether this is a worldwide price change. It would certainly keep the momentum of PS4 going.

That said, Sony has occasionally adjusted prices for region specific economics, like when they raised the price of PS4 in Canada to $450 after launch ;P

They are really pushing the PS4 in Japan.

Console market is kinda dead in Japan, if Sony can revitalize it there they can dominate it. Once you get some momentum going it builds itself up.

They MIGHT drop the price in other territories for the holidays if they want to beat Microsoft at once, but again the console is still moving great numbers so who knows.

I actually didn't think a price cut in the West was coming, but maybe it actually is.

That or this will be a region only thing

Japan is struggling with declining console and software sales. The rest of the regions still have PS4 easily outselling it's rivals and demand is still high, especially going into the holiday. Why would they do a price cut when they're winning like this?

I just bought one less than ten days ago :(

Then again, if they make it $350 USD instead, that's still $460 CAD which is more than the current price of $450 so I doubt we're getting a price drop in Canada...

They may want to increase total install base. I've been somewhat against the idea of a price drop in the West all along but Sony have room if they want to. Not every price drop is about "outselling the competition" some are in place strictly to raise levels of install base, even if they already have the sales lead.

If Sony feel they want to speed up install bases further in the West they have room to drop. If I was a betting man I say it doesn't happen but its far from impossible.

Feel like it will be a WW price cut since 1 October is when the new fiscal quarter starts and they have always done price drops pretty much at the same time for all major regions. Also all the new CH-1200 models should be on shelves which they stated has a reduced manufacturing cost.

Isn't converted exchange rate mean that the PS4 got a $100 price drop, making it $299 in japan?

It's not $50 by any means considering the current japan to US exchange rate.

Let's see if that price-drop is applied all over the world.

I'm buying a PS4 by November, and 350 euros would be perfect.

No reason for Sony to follow through with a price drop in the US. Better to maintain current margins and sales trajectory through the remainder of the fiscal year, with value bundles as a possibility instead of outright cuts.

Good for Japan, though. Sales stimulation is sorely needed there.

That price is without tax, you need to add 8%.

It adds up to 37,800 Yen which is still a lot considering that now pre-drop new PS4 are available for 39,000 Yen.

This. Sony would be leaving money on the table by dropping the NA PS4 price.

Jesus christ no. The massive increase in the over all install base would more then make up for that. Hell, factor in a PS Plus membership, and 1 game the gains would be enormous.

A $299 Darth Vader PS4 in November would likely break the record.

But yeah, a $100 cut would be crazy and I couldn't ever see that happening. If they do it, probably only $50

In the west they will make announcements in time with the beginning of the peak season here which is November and December.
They have a conference on October 27th.
It's really 2+2 ;)

Please gives a price drop Sony. $300 would be huge for PS4 in the west.

5000 yen price cut in Japan means 50$/€ for us.

They have targets to hit. It's not always about the beating the competitors, otherwise the PS2 would have never received a price cut.

$50 is still really good, that would make it about the same as Xbox One and would help move sales alot.

PS4 is selling like hotcakes in the US. I don't foresee a price drop coming to US as well. This is just to push more units in Japan where it's struggling.

It's selling better than the competition, but it's not really selling like hot cakes, depending on how you look at it. System sales seem very front loaded to the holiday season, whereas the rest of the year sales seem slower than they have been in the past for popular systems. I think a price drop would be very welcome tbh.
