Speedrunning through the missions for S-ranks i'm starting to realise how barebones and unvaried this game actually is.

If you want variety then do some of the side mission objectives.

Why would re-doing missions at maximum speed just to S rank it provide variety lol

Also Sins of the Father is clearly about
Code Talker
and his "children" ~

I don't think the game is really designed for speedrunning. That's probably a flaw for people who liked doing that for previous MGS games, but in this case it really is more of a sandbox where each Main Op is a specific type of scenario presented to the player, and you're invited to play around with it and try different stuff. For people only going for speed and ranks, I do agree that the underlying gameplay doesn't really support it in a satisfying way. The best solutions for getting the fastest time and the best rank are often really dumb and straightforward stuff, instead of actual satisfying challenges.

I definitely agree that the beauty comes from being slow and meticulous - I've had the most fun on subsistence or total stealth mode.

That said the game's own ranking system does not align with this. The best way to get S-rank is virtually always fast and sloppy. Rush in past everyone and if you get seen shoot your way out. Hard not to S-rank with that same strategy every time, provided you know where to go and what to do. Meanwhile I've had plenty of missions that I did with a textbook stealth approach (isolating and eliminating enemies while avoid ever being detected) that wound up netting me A or B.

Why do I have the feeling that no matter what the ending is, the fans just wouldn't like it? As for story details, I wish that the Metal Gear in the game had more of an impact to the story. It was just like... "Oh noo, there's a metal gear, destroy it because you know the gist by now"

Yes the ranking system is broken. Basically anything to do with informing the player in intelligent ways is broken in this game - the UI, the rankings, the menus, the way missions are arranged in Chapter 2, etc. I would say "Kojima should really consider getting a new UI team", but errr... I guess it's not something that matters anymore right now! :P

Kojima needs to not bend to the will of people who don't know good story or characterizations. His creating Raiden was based off trying to get women to like his character, since they don't like snake. So let's shoehorn a titanic love story subplot!

lol. What's the excuse with MGSV then?

breh, it's not like this ending isn't OMG AMAZING

it's that the game

- had a cut mission 51 closing the Eli plot line
- had no narrative/character exploration in Chapter 2
- had a cut Chapter 3 removed from the game
- had things like The Boss' assets tucked away, not for you to play with
- didn't close or create the "Missing Link" in any way, shape or form
- lied to the player for no good pay-off

it's cack and Kojima has fried his egg.

uh no that's not quite right

ugh, I took a bunch of great screenshots for BB last scene and Quiet's last scene and I forgot the stupid goddamn PS4 screenshot icon stays in the screenshot. Who the hell designed that and thought it was okay?

uh no that's not quite right

It's confusing. Some sources indicate that he had Shinkawa make Raiden prettier to appeal to the female demographic that was turned off by Snake in MGS1. Others say that he intended to have him designed that way even without the focus groups.

Everything Kojima does is trying to get people to like his games. For all the reputation he has as an auteur, he's probably the most audience-hungry developer in the Japanese game industry. He just puts his own weird twist on his bloodhound-like ability to sniff out trends.

I don't know why but it's wrong.

Get out of here with this. Fans dislike it because it's bad. There's legitimate reason.

Agreed, dude's no an auteur.

Can I just say that this thread (and the last) has been some of the best reading and discussions I've had since joining Gaf. It's been an absolute roller-coaster.

This thread has been our Outer Heaven.

Obligatory

It's been really nice reading and occasionally replying to people here, it's been actual discussions for quite awhile now, it's sorta nice, and of course there's some hilarious shit that's come from this thread too haha

The reasoning behind Peace Walker was

My son doesn't like Metal Gear -> My son is a child -> Children don't like Metal Gear?! -> Children like Monster Hunter -> What if I made Monster Hunter -> Monster Gear?! -> Okay now to spend $60 million on this

seriously though, why does ishmael have 2 good eyes? that's not a glass eye either, I'm pretty familiar with glass eyes and what they look like. It's also not damaged or blind either. I mean, he took a bullet through the eyesocket and there's no evidence of that here.

In fact on closer inspection, the ishmael model looks nothing like snake. His mouth and cheekbones are completely different. He looks about 15 years younger than big boss as well. Seriously, is there any explanation for this other than they didn't know how to keep it secret any other way?

Bonus question: did konami or kojipro ever actually say that this game was the 'missing link' or the story of big bosses downfall? cause I'm pretty sure that never happened, only fans kept repeating it till everybody thought it was true.

What part? And there wasn't a lie in that post. Raiden was designed with women in mind, girls who aren't fond of snakes design or play metal gear to begin with.

He was designed that way, but he wasn't created for that purpose.

kojima's son's stupidity made us all demons

Kojima got a dude who designs movie opening credits sequences to design (or at least conceptualise) the core menu interface, so no wonder it's clumsy and unintuitive. Different ways to do the same thing, multiple items that could fit under multiple sub-menu titles, playing cassettes under the 'Mission' part of the menu. The design encumbers simple navigation of the sheer amount of things you can do and manage.

Hallcinations!!!

...Yeah, it's pretty dumb.

CGI team will never die!

we concluded earlier that Big Boss was wearing a full face cast like what they used to show Joakim Mogrem

Also the launch trailer had "THE MISSING LINK" in it

I'm pretty sure I would have noticed if Ishmael's eyes never moved, or didn't blink.

Nah, we're all putting more thought into it than Kojima did. Dumb, contrived twist.

Why do I get the feeling that you're talking out of your ass? If it's a good ending, people will like it. Just look at MGS3.

Okay just finished the game and yeah ... Wasn't that bad but mission 45 with quiet was just hell. That stupid checkpoint. I think I died like 10 times.

The Raikov mask could do that shit in 1964, only issue with that one was no mouth movement. Fucking Sigint. Though I wonder, if BB had a mask to wear, what's the point of the bandages? Just being extra extra careful in case of wacky hijinx leading to the mask peeling off?

Friends warned me in advance, so I went into the sideop fully armed with Battle Dress and the best rocket launcher I had. Made the mission pretty fun instead!

Why was Big Boss there anyway? Were they both in a coma for 9 years and woke up at the same time? Why was he watching over Medic if Boss was such a valuable asset and notorious target? Why not just have Ocelot sit in with him and protect him. Do the tapes explain that. Was Boss just chilling in the hospital for nine years too.

Speedrunning through the missions for S-ranks i'm starting to realise how barebones and unvaried this game actually is.

Speedrunning even stuff like MGS3 was basically just CQC ground throw everyone at full speed and do the binocular zoom/immediately switch to pistol for a guaranteed headshot trick. Then just lay down some magazines for the Eva escort.

This game you can go full on Sonic with D-Walker and a Shield, call in a strike on an entire outpost, or even just run in on foot, wormhole a prisoner out and be done with it with maybe a bloody screen on the way out. But actually reconning and slowly choking out guards as you go the old fashioned way, along with a lot of other tools you can play around with, still provides a ton of options. It's kinda fulfilling to do it with your hands and a few tranq shots, but still do it quickly... when you capture an outpost as big as OKB and sleep the last guard before the first guards wake up, it's pretty satisfying.

Variety in MGS games only ever rears it's head when you play the first time and mess up a lot, or just replay and do things unintentionally unorthodox in the least optimal manner just to troll AI guards and have fun. Or, as always, Infinity bandanna/wig and get crazy with it.

mission 45 pro-tip

if you came unprepared, quit it and come back in with your Battle Dress and Rocket Launcher..........wowwww problem solved!

Should have done that ...
This mission nearly killed the game for me!
The worst part was once started you couldn't go back to mother base even after dying you couldn't go back

I had no idea and went in with my sneaking equipment. It was just a nightmare for me. I had never set up a destruction loadout because I played the game non-lethally. Whenever I did need to do that, I always just brought in D-Walker, which the game explicitly would not let me do. Couldn't go back and to the ACC despite you being able to do that in missions where you literally just crashed a helicopter.

I think by far the worst aspect of that entire level is that it's really, really easy for tanks to shoot down your rockets with bullets. Ergo, you can easily be in a position where you don't know if you're hitting them because you do see an explosion, but you don't know if it connected.

Your gripe is something I appreciated about the game. There's a Metal Gear because there has to be but fuck it. Skull Face didn't give a shit; he cut corners to get it done and it barely worked (well, it doesn't work without Mantis).

The real weapon being a language-based virus was smart, I thought. We've had enough of the "nukes to threaten the world". Instead we have a villain who wants to get genocidal, and is somewhat original about it.

I think conceptually the idea was that Big Boss woke up before the medic, but stuck around waiting for him to wake up to execute his brilliant switch-a-roo plan. It's a pretty fucking dumb plan though. Didn't know Big Boss was such a wuss in reality. :P

I agree with MGS3. But even MGS had the Nikita electrified floor, the laser grids, MGS2 had the sword fights and freeze bombs and MGS4 mixed it up with the disguise whistle bit. I think i just miss those type of "puzzle" gameplays. I've played around 100 of the side-ops and haven't seen anything like those.
