I didn't even consider this angle. This would've been so cool to put some emphasis on rather than how it just feels like a happy coincidence.

Agreed, and what's weirder is that thematically it makes sense: it is a continuation of the cycle of violence (the boss is BB's phantom pain).

It is a decent swerve on its own, honestly. I think it needed about ten times more context rather than being a Shamylan-esque twist at the end, but I think it was alright.

I like that Kojima made us think we were creating a character because that is what you do in open world games. The doctor even says "It's a big open world out there, so you should decide how you want to look." Subtle.

Ocelot was complicit in a plan to ruin one guy's life so Big Boss could go do god knows what but somehow had to do with gathering all the world's nuclear weapons and then the main lesson he learned from all of this was "Yo what if I just destroy all of modern society."

I guess you're right

Ocelot's boringness in this game just cemented him as some sort of tragic character that just wanted a friend and turned into the ultimate bad guy

so I guess we're all forgivin mute kiefer cause of the ending considering real BB doesnt shut up during the intro huh

I dont buy it
I don't mind Mute Kiefer because it turns the character into an endearing simpleton. His perpetual slack-jawed confusion makes him a much more entertaining character then any of Kojima's exposition delivery automatons.
It obviously is a half-assed performance and production, but if I can't have a Big Boss who won't shut up about wanting to eat every single thing he sees, Simple Snake might be the next best thing.

There is an odd line that sort of implies he might have romantic feelings for Big Boss.

When they're interrogating Quiet, he says "She's fallen in love with the legend. I was that way, too, once."

I don't know that it's evidence one way or another, I'm just saying that so much of the series makes sense if Ocelot possessed a tragically unrequited love for Big Boss.

So people still butthurt about no David Hayter?

People just want the game they made up in their heads and not the one they got.

I think I'm liking MGSV more now. Its basically like MGS2 where eventually people will appreciate the game more once they are over the knee-jerk reaction phase.

really dude

I really wish people would stop trying to position people who disagree with them about an ending to a video game as just being petulant whiners that wanted fanservice scenes.

LOL no, chatty BB is the best thing ever, the translated Kaz tapes in GZ are a godsend.

How did everyone feel about the main vocal themes in this game, including their usage in the story? First off, let's remember how vocal themes have fit in the series before.

MGS1 had The Best is Yet to Come, played during the ending.

MGS2 had some song I forget, a lot of people like it but I thought it was forgettable
MGS3 had Snake Eater for its intro and the ladder. Way to Fall was used in the ending

MGS4 had Love Theme, played during the intro.

Peace Walker had Heaven's Divide. I think it played during the final battle. I barely remember PW

Portable Ops isn't canon (or most of it isn't, I don't know, does anyone know?) but it had Calling to the Night, during the ending

MGSV had The Man Who Sold the World play during the intro, when Venom comes out of his coma, and Sins of the Father during the infamous Skull Face jeep ride (Also a hint of it during the phantom cigar montage)

Personally, I love Sins of the Father, but it was used at the most awkward moment and lost its impact. The Man Who Sold the World being used as a cover was a nice touch, and probably the best thematic use of a song in-game in the entire series, but I didn't care for the song itself very much. MGSV was missing a good credits song. The Phantom Pain would have been perfect.

I loved it. Fuck giving you answers or whatever. Kojima wanted me to be the Big Boss of his last MGS, as my favorite franchise that hit me hard and was WAY more powerful than what people wanted, "Hey guys you were right, it was Grey Fox all along" or "Hey now you play as Solid Snake and you kill Big Boss kthxbye."

I didn't love it but I liked it and I knew what Kojima was going for. Execution wasn't well done but hey I got a kick out of it. That and well I felt the series ended when 4 ended so I didn't care that much to what happens since everything is basically set in stone to what is going to happen going forward. Heck, you only need to play MGS3 to know how things would play out.

After playing PW, I don't see how anyone could expect more from the story honestly. MGSV is basically PW 2.0 but pretty much better in terms of everything. You can't even crawl in PW lol. The collector's edition guide has some very interesting things/comments regarding the series from MG1 to MGSV especially since Kojima had a big hand in the making of the guide. At the end of the day, the word expectation is the real phantom pain.

Except it wasn't you. I mean the medic is a character still. Just a mostly mute one. I did'nt want for some super fan service blow out , just good answers. As it was, this game gave me neither of those. Just more questions.

He was a character, but it was pretty obvious that the ending monologue was supposed to break the fourth wall.

Sins of the Father is an INCREDIBLE theme, and deserved a better moment than what it got.

I would rather have it play during the mission 45 fight than what we got.

No doubt it was supposed to play during the scrapped mission 51 fight with Sahelanthropus.

I have no idea what Kojima was thinking with that car scene.

It's like he realized he had to get Snake and Skull Face over to the Power Plant but had no idea how he would do it. Then he plotted out the dialogue, went "Oh, fuck, this is not nearly long enough," so he just left in 45 seconds to a minute of Skull Face and Snake staring at each other.

Of course. He wasn't a blank slate is all I meant. Also yeah Kaz was a jerk, but he was also the one trying to help those kids. Kaz was kinda good dude.

dude, fucking skullface. what even was that

the more I think back about this game the more disjointed I realize it is

stuff just fucking happens with no connecting tissue, which is extra weird since Kojima doesnt let any character run into the street without just bumping into their clone / son / father / whatever

I guess we'll never know what it could have been but yeah

I guess every character in the series sucks

except solid and raiden

+Navy Captain that technically beats an Arsenal Gear with a WW2 battleship.

you guys don't like a super akward jeep ride with idling animations?

WooOOOoOHOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAA

I think it would have been a million times better if Snake had literally any lines during it.

Him trying to keep Skull Face talking or trying to distract people while he gripped a handgun would have made the scene interesting or tense. Instead it's basically the strangest exposition dump I have ever seen in a series with plenty of strange exposition dumps.

they shoulda gone further with Kaz and just make him fucking war crazy

the early game speech really made me feel like he was gonna go psycho and become some sort of pain seeking freak

Kaz did a lot of angry things in this game

Anything involving Huey has him out to crucify the man

Cane slaps a kid and says he doesn't like kids

Angry speech to Ocelot during the ending

Basically every time he's on screen he's doing something angry. In codec calls he's doing his job as V's Colonel Campbell, and in some tapes he comes off as normal, but any time he shows up in person you can feel the rage

On the subject of Kaz

Metal Gear Miller Ground Fiddles Did You Like My Sunglasses Edition

All the Miller you'll ever need

Kaz is a lunatic in the game and gets progressively more paranoid and crazy. That was a good thing, I thought. Though it must be stated that despite what he says he clearly like kids.

The Skullface car ride would have been better if he completes his monologue, Venom dead staring him the entire time, then he just throws him off the car and starts pounding the shit out of him (maybe also put in some support strikes at the same time to destroy surrounding vehicles). Then you just punch the fuck out of him using R2 until he's dead. With no words.

I mean yea, if you were missing an arm and a leg, you would be a pretty angry motherfucker as well.

BUT HE DON'T NEED PROSTHETICS CUZ HE WANTS TO REMEMBER THE PAIN AND ALL HIS DEAD COMRADES.

Hamburger tapes are the best in the game but holy shit does it not fit V's Kaz at all.

Though maybe nature's blessings heal a man's anger momentarily.

You know what? Yes. There should have been an R2 prompt on screen the entire time where you could just punch Skull Face out and try to kill him. Then you have to get the rest of the way to the Power Plant while the entire country is on Omega Level alert for you with tanks and choppers and every base having a firing line ready for you.

If you didn't punch him, you could simply just listen to his monologue and drive the entire way.

Yeah Burger Kax is strangely calm and don't want to strangle Code Talker every five seconds. I bet Kaz shoots the guys you fire just for anger management.

Ocelot insisting that he be the one to pull the knife out of BB's chest after the fight club scene (that I bet most people probably never even saw in the game; I sure didn't), is basically the closest thing to a sex scene that we'll ever get for the greatest love story in the Metal Gear saga. "Be gentle" "Of course..."

Why has no one commented on how quickly Venom goes from the heliport to where the fight is happening. It's literally not possible that he got there that fast. Dude can teleport.

Yes, this post is just complete gloating on my part, but over on the MGS Forums on 4th June, I predicted that Maria Stylianou would be listed as the location scout for The Phantom Pain.

Here's my original post:

http://mgsforums.com/single/?p=9463985&t=7750637

And I was completely correct. She's the sole person listed at the location scout in the game's end credits ;-)
