Persona 5 delayed to Summer 2016 for PS3/PS4

Wow i das getting hyped watching the tráiler and then saw this, its stupid, but expected, why insist con 2015 only to do this though, its almost insulting.😠

Excellent trailer, glad to see the gameplay is chock full of different stuff. Atlus had to have known for a while about the delay if it's this big, so I'm confused as to why they consistently insisted and chimed in about a 2015 release as opposed to saying nothing at all.

The only thing that surprises me about this is how much people pushed the notion it would be this year. Probably for the best given my backlog.

This more or less secures a Witcher or MGS GoTY for me.

So much crow being served. This was one of the most obvious delays I've ever seen.

Shitty but not surprising at all. This isn't the kind of game that will get the typical small atlus PR when it's ready. It's going to have a massive ad campaign.

It's gonna release in August.

Exactly. It was because of Atlus. Trust they don't deserve after this mind you. Which is why making a "fanboy" comment isn't completely out of line. With any other developer, the majority of people would have been predicting the delay for months. But with this game, we had people trying to analyze and defend Persona's "unique" marketing strategies, when really it was pretty obvious there wasn't anything unique going on besides an impending delay.

Any I agree with Dragonslayer's comment. I think some of that 82% came from faith in Atlus and fandom of them as developers/publishers. That was really the only "solid" evidence on the other side.

I didn't think there was any solid evidence in either direction, but my personal reasons for betting on 2015 were:

1) Past track record, the very short announcement -> release timeframe of Persona 3 and Persona 4 (proving they can keep stuff under wraps)
2) A long delay already from 2014 to 2015
3) Atlus USA confirming 2015 again and again

All these together got me to believe in 2015 (in Japan, at least) and while I was wrong, I don't think even now that it was that unfounded.

Despite the fantastic trailer, this delay hurts, a lot.

From which episode is this?

Poor Ben, i wonder how he feels now.

Kinda expected, but still...

2016 is lining up to be the best year for JRPGs since the late '90s.

Damnit Atlus, I believed in you.

Now I'm debating whether to get the PS4 or PS3 version. I kinda want BB to cancel my order then gives me $20 coupon before E3 so I can preorder the PS4 version during E3.

I guess that's fair. I got suspicious for some of the exact reasons you weren't though.

That there already was a long delay made me think something was up when we didn't see more of the game this year. If they delayed a year, they should have been ready to show more. But instead, people were defending the lack of content being shown as some new super-smart marketing strategy.

And the brazen confirmations of 2015 never inspired confidence in me. I've seen it with other games too. PR mouthpieces saying the release year/date right up until the day it's delayed? Oh yeah, who's never seen that before.

I wouldn't be surprised if Atlas U.S.A found out at the same time as the rest of us. They've surely been working on the localisation.

Regardless, I think everyone has the right to be annoyed at this news. All official discourse said 2015, and besides, short announce-to-release games do happen. Gravity Daze is releasing in Japan in December and was announced two days ago. There was nothing unprecedented in expecting 2015 in this situation.

guys but what if this is actually a ruse and they'll save all their marketing budget for november 5 when the game secretly releases

This.

It was still good enough reasoning for 2015 that 82% bet on it. If the evidence for delay was that solid as people are saying now, it wouldn't probably be the case.

That vote isn't really indicative of anything. Lots of us aren't even aware there was a vote even, especially those of us who don't hang around gaming side as much anymore. Believe it or not, discussion on the subject does come up elsewhere on the site.

Let's also not forget how blind faith can cause an echo effect at times.

Point 1 isn't really a strong point in this case. With P4 they had an established engine and a previous game to build upon the learnings from.

Point 2 in of itself isn't indicative because that delay may have been due to a number of factors...the Index/Sega thing, the addition of PS4...it occurred early enough that development issues that come up could still mean a delay can happen.

Point 3 isn't as strong either when the parent company hadn't said anything at the same time. Disconnects between offices still happens.

That bold white text busted my balls, but after seeing the trailer about 5 times, I'm okay with the delay. At least they don't rush their product out and leave things out, like other RECENT games...

I love the fact that the actual trailer thread is half the length of this one. The indignation is palpable. Here, palp it.

Disappointing, but if there's ever been a year where there's more than enough to keep myself busy with, it's 2015. By the end of the year, we'll have had Bloodborne, Witcher 3, Batman: Arkham Knight, Metal Gear Solid V, and Fallout 4. I'm already concerned about being able to find time for all of them (I'm working my way through MGSV, and still have Bloodborne and Witcher 3 sat on my shelf unplayed).

Persona 5 would definitely have been my number one priority had it released this year, but at least I won't be at a loss for what to play.

Once I said I expected it to happen and a couple users called me out... well, there it is.
But, to me at least, that's allright... this year I won't have the money to buy more than one game.

Didn't Atlus/Sega still had the 2015 release on their recent TGS portal site update? Pretty lame that they would still have that even soon before this delay was reveal(hell it still shown like that).

On a side note, Summer for game releases is always barren, so this will up their sales by quite a lot. Especially since its going to be a presumably long JRPG.

+5897

Didn't hear anything about a vote.

And I'm part of the ones telling you it wasn't releasing in 2015.

We had solid ways to know it wasn't going to release. Same thing happened for Naruto Storm 4. Exactly the same thing.

The fact that you don't consider it solid isn't really our problem. Least you could have done is expect to be wrong. In our case, pleasant surprise, in your case, well here you go.

I've been commenting in basically saying the PS4 is starting to have that JRPG swagger and support from the PS1 days. It's awesome and makes the PS4 the choice for RPG's.

Why is there a significant gap between NA and EU releases? Are they localising for every major European language?

If so, why can't the UK just get the NA version around the same time? :(

Actually I'm happy that they delayed it. I'd rather a game be delayed and be great on release than thrown out earlier and under cooked to meet some deadline.

Also, there is always a summer slump for games. It's great knowing that there will be something to play during the summer drought.

They don't have a European branch so they have to rely on other publishers to do it for them. NISA have been doing an alright job so far but we still have Devil Survivor 2 situations where we don't get it until 5 months after.

Persona Q was a fluke.

Part of me doesn't care cause that's probably the earliest I'd buy it (too crowded right now) and the other part of me does cause that means if I want to try to wait til it gets cheaper means I'll have to wait longer.

I mean I want to play it and from the one Persona I've played I am betting it is going to be an excellent game. But for whatever reason it's not a high priority game for me so I don't really want to pay day one prices (and I"m not saying it's worth it. I think it will be and it is a good enough game and certainly will give you enough play for your money. Just for me being on a tight budget it's not a must play right away enough game for me to want to play day one and pay day one price).

Probably would have been day one on Vita (I understand why not but I prefer JRPGs these days on my Vita. That's probably one reason it's not day one... I'm not as big on playing JRPGs on my tv).

Well, I sort of don't mind it coming out next summer as a bunch of games come out at the start of next year that I want to play. I hope that next summer is also the EU date.

Oh, shame.

Hopefully importing isn't too expensive, not done it since the PSP came out in Japan :P

This were my thoughs, and now that we know it won't happen, I still see it as something that could've happened. It simply went the other way in this case.

Looking at things with a clear head this is good, my Q4 2015 is dangerously loaded already. (Plus I'm European so this hurts a bit less xD)

At least we know development is going well and we may see more stuff on Saturday, looking forward to that :)

It is what it is. I just want a polished final product, and I'm glad they're not trying to push it out the door in a less than ideal state to appease impatient fans.

So there's still hope for a simultaneous NA/JP launch...

Though, the hardcore denier (which is obviously wrong, i'm going through the 5 stages of grief right now) in me notes that ATLUS USA hasn't announced their delay yet.
