god

go back and listen to the Peace Walker tape where Big Boss asks Huey if he's really okay with arming ZEKE with a nuke after regretting Peace Walker, and Huey telling him that he trusts Big Boss to do the right thing and stay the same person he has been, and you think it's dramatic irony about how Big Boss turns bad.

Now look at where both characters ended up

It's like poetry.

No one in MGSV really acts like their pres-established selves and any development that happened to transform them into these weird bizarro versions of themselves happens off screen. Ocelot becomes a standup guy who doesn't really enjoy torture and is completely truthful throughout the game (outside of withholding your real identity). Kaz becomes a vengeful, paranoid asshole. Huey becomes a sociopath who kills his wife in order to experiment on his own child.

It's like everyone in Diamond Dogs is a body double.

Ocelot in the tapes suddenly getting indignant about Kaz thinking that Ocelot treats torture as an art is so weird.

What, was he really just pretending all those years? Did he hypnotize himself to like torturing people?

It always bothered be that Big Boss and Ocelot became friends when Ocelot shot out Big Boss' eye when he was screwing around. I guess Boss is a better man then I to get over that one

He's got to become the villain to push Solid Snake forward. Even if it means threatening, and maybe even ultimately killing, the daughter of Big Boss' good friend and savior, Roy Campbell. Unless that part of PO is non canon.
He'll drown innocent marines if it means taking down the Patriots. You gotta scramble a few eggs to take down a rogue AI.

Mother Base strikes me as something they should have done well or not at all. It's too big of an element for how uninteresting it is.

They should have been thinking 'GTA open world' when making it. It should feel like a small city. I should walk around and see soldiers playing soccer at night, doing target practice (outside of a cutscene), maybe let me explore the canteen or living quarters.

It's just boring to be in.

Remember the E3 footage with choppers flying over, a shooting range on the command platform, patrols, UAV drones flying around, vehicles everywhere?

...yeah. Something went wrong after E3 2014. The fact that there is no interior whatsoever is beyond daft. Why can't I get in a control room on the Command Platform and see Miller at work? Why is there no canteen or armory on the Combat Platform? A hangar with vehicles on the Support Platform? The list of obvious missing content goes on forever. Hell, even choppers flying over would liven up the place immensely. I have 700 soldiers, where the hell is everyone?

but I dont wanan be horny or bloody.

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Also: No. You still get full demon points and -50,000 Heroism on building the nuke. But you can dismantle the nuke and just visit the Zoo like 30 times to get the Demon Points wiped.

Such sublime gameplay destroyed by such mediocrity in the story telling deparment. Having a dumb silent protagonist and having bulk of what is already a shitty story being told through tapes is so lazy. I really think Kojima bit of more than he can chew by going open world ( which was again wholly unnecessary ). The gameplay raises the bar for stealth games though so that is a positive at least.

I thought Huey was just the continuation of that 'character' that started with Hal all the way back in MGS1 ie Hal being all butthurt that his research was used to create a nuke toting WMD with him somehow divorcing himself from the obvious destructive capabilities of his work beforehand. But obviously, Hal turns out to be genuinely good and remorseful and shit when faced with reality.

Huey is just the other end of the spectrum. He's a sociopath. Loves his work. Doesn't care what it's used for. As long as he gets to continue his research. Ofc he will play nice and say all the right things and appear virtuous, obviously this is his portrayal in PW. He is a sociopath. He is willing to say all the right things as and when he needs to.

Point being, you can't separate yourself from your work and any evil shiz it may be used for. Hal comes to terms with this, addresses it. Huey doesn't, hence he's a dick. Sins of the father and all that.

lol

To your original question, though, the best answer I've heard (and if it is the case it isn't presented well in the game) is the Skull Face targeted Big Boss because it was the easiest way to get a Zero. You target Big Boss, Zero starts making predictable moves to protect his friend, Zero becomes an easier target.

Though, as you realized, it doesn't really explain coming after him in the hospital, because Zero had already been attacked by that time.

But Skull Face already had Zero's location from raping Paz?

Yeah, Huey does things solely based off of self-preservation and furthering his own plans. Even if that means lying through his teeth, puffing up his comrades, or justifying how hypocritical he is. He's a stereotype, but I liked his execution. It made you hate the bastard, and until discovering the truth about Strangelove, there was still question in your mind if he did the stuff the others were accusing him of.

It's just such a wild departure from his character in Peace Walker that I was constantly confused as to what was going on, and wether or not he was indeed the only sane person in the group.

I finished PW ages back, but don't remember any of the story, so you may be right.

The End only needed sunlight though. Code Talker and Quiet need water for their "photosythesis" to work with the parasites converting the water into Sugar. It's a bit dumb that Quiet's attire couldn't be fully clothed (given the outfits you earn before she exits stage right) and the reason given on that is "well she breathes through her skin!" as the reason. :/ Because water-wise it isn't like Code Talker needs to be fully naked to absorb water for his photosynthesis process unlike Quiet. :/

I think the difference is Code Talker was not burned almost to death and didn't have ruined lungs when he got infected with the parasites, he uses his parasites to create sugar from photosynthesis but the game iirc never says he relies on them just to breath, like Quiet.. But the game doesn't really make a clear link to Quiet's injuries = her nakedness. I honestly don't mind her outfit at all. What I do mind is how the camera points at her tits and how she poses for you.

I liked it.

He made a fucked up decision in Ground Zeroes to save himself and it led to his life gradually deteriorating over the course of 9 years. Things like getting into a relationship with Strangelove and it ending with him killing her. Working to develop weapons for another madman.

Miller keeps saying he didn't lose anything but he lost everything, slowly, over the course of 9 years, to the point that he becomes a warped, lesser version of himself.

I just beat mission 46 and watched the mission 51 video last night and sat on the story for a bit.

I think I would echo most of the sentiments voiced in this thread.

One thing I would like to add is that there needed to be three or four more supporting characters for tapes.

A character from Afghanistan to tell us about life there and small details about the Mujaheddin

A character from Africa to do a similar role

Someone from the animal NGO to give the animal platform some more life and give some details about each animal captured.

Someone to talk about the music tapes (be a pop culture character too to fill in the detail for Snake since he has been out for 9 years, sorta like Para-Medic )

They could have EASILY fulfilled the first two with stuff you did in the main game. Malak for Afghanistan and maybe a child soldier for Africa. You probably could have kept a couple of the Ocelot "Africa/Afghanistan Today" tapes as a primer, but fleshed it out with characters from the region.

For the last two, I think they could probably be merged into one character. Maybe make it a woman who is really 80's in fashion (Cyndi Lauper-ish) a animal rights person with an interest in music.

I got REALLY sick of hearing Ocelot, Miller and Code Talker in those tapes. Code Talker had WAY more than he needed, but he did provide us the hamburger ones so they weren't all bad.

Yeah that would have been great. It is tiring with just those three. A female voice should have been a necessary addition.

I miss when Metal Gear Solid boss battles were testaments to amazing game design. Isolated sections of ultra focused detail and multiple methods of tackling a boss, not just a massive health bar.

There doesn't seem to be anything akin to "Hey, you can throw snakes at Ocelot to distract him", or even the stuff with The End or most of the bosses.

They still have some of those moments like Supply Dropping on quiet or Trying to use the water gun on fire guy, but its not as intricate as the past bosses. Hopefully there are still more but its going to take time for people to find those like the other ones.

I imagine all these are follies of an open world design. Spending time making everything else work won't give you enough time to focus on these kinds of things.

Except it comes off as an afterthought and not a natural evolution of Huey's character as established in Peace Walker. Saying that his character in Peace Walker is a facade is a cop out for bad writing. Every character is putting on some fake persona to fool everyone for some elaborate plan. Ocelot becomes evil in order to really help Solid Snake. Kaz becomes good guy because he really just wants revenge on Big Boss. Character turns for no reason for everybody!

Wow these late game missions are hard.

Eliminate the colonel and armored convoy dropping in with no equipment? I'm at a loss.

You can steal rocket launchers from some of the guards. Also at one of the small outposts there's one of those armored vehicles with missiles on it. You could also just throw a soldier in the middle of the road so the tanks stop when they roll up on you. Then just run up behind the one tank and fulton it and see if you can get the other too. If not use the rocket launcher on it.

It's actually fairly easy to S rank.

Sneak in grab the intel, snatch a guard, choke him out, run up the road from the site so the truck and tanks round the corner outta sight, throw the guard on the road, sneak up to the first tank while it's honking to wake the sleeping guard, fulton the tank, the colonel will freak out and get out of the car block the other tank from progressing, loop around and fulton the rear tank out, then grab the colonel CQC him and his driver and fulton him out, then just call the chopper in for extraction.

You don't even need to steal a gun if you do it right.

The biggest thing you gotta worry about is the guard who you threw on the road will wake up and he can spot you if you forget he exists so make sure to mark him.

There's some vague hints at mentality of any means necessary when you find out that he plagiarized Granin's work to get published. Its a bit of a leap to risking the well being of your son and murdering your wife, but seed is there for actions leading up to and during MGSV.

You can fulton the whole convoy right at the start and not worry about the intel if you run down the down the road to their spawn point. Once you get near the end of the mission the convoy spawns a little bit in front of you and you can extract all three. You still get the S rank because you did it so fast. Your other option is on the opposite side of the zone there's a guard post with a rocket tank that you can steal and thing makes short work of the convoy.

There's also a tank on the right side of the map, near the smaller out post that you can use.

I kinda like it. But I wish they didn't play up Huey as the total scapegoat villain with no redeemable backstory or motive behind his actions. Skullface is already established as someone who can be ruthless and break even the strongest wills. He managed to get the location of the most illusive man in the world, Zero, from Paz.

If they said that Skull Face's torture completely destroyed Huey and made him have a psychotic break, then I probably would have liked it better. Like, what he underwent under Skull Face's rule was so horrible that he'd lie and kill to avoid going through it again. I don't like any of the Hal related stuff, but they could have made it so that Huey wanted to force Hal into Sahelanthropus because Skull Face demanded results and using Hal was the only way to ensure his and his family's safety. And maybe in some ways he blames Snake for what he and his family went through. Maybe Skull Face could have convinced Huey to focus his despair toward Big Boss and redirect his vengeance toward the man he used to admire, Joker-style.

Instead we get a weird Huey who we're supposed to believe was always a greedy coward. Although there is a certain Walter White-esque charm to Coward Huey's utter dastardliness that I can't bring myself to hate him.

B-but photosynthesis!!

Let's disregard that The End, another super sniper was photosynthetic.

Right, you just illustrated my point. It's a contrivance and half ass justification to have her parade around in little clothing.

Or it could be she needed greater exposure because her lungs were burned out. I am under the impression the end still had his lungs and despite being old wasn't seriously injured.

I thought that he was upset that it is referred to as torture as he prefers "interrogation". I could be misremembering. I think the difference is that it may be possible to gain info without resorting to torture but only a competent interrogator would know.

You can S it without getting intel. I dropped in, tranqed guard, got his gun. ran towards convoy, shot in air to make them stop and then fultoned ever vehicle from the rear. If you dive to the ground after each fulton, they continue driving until you shoot in the air again. You can also fulton the truck with the commander in it to attain goal. Just simply avoid being spotted and it is an easy win.

ashamed of his words and deeds.

I'm sure many people were ashamed of their deeds after that Quiet in the rain cutscene alright.

Now I feel ashamed for repeating that stupid joke for the 100th time.

I'm already a demon. I don't know what I'm going for but parasites.

I always grab the intel just so I know where the tanks are, makes it easier to plan. It's a shame you cant fulton out of the mission with a truck the same way you can with a cargo container. Also you can't get a tranq pistol on the subsistence version which is what he was asking about.

lol.. guess its sad when you think about that. The most memorable moments of MGSV come down to this.

PARASITES and HAMBURGERS!

I was under the impression they basically spawn the tanks once you got intel? I waited near the village for ages once and they didn't show up.

I don't even have that much attachment to the series but I can only imagine how it must feel that the final boss of the VERY FIRST GAME IN THE SERIES WAS RETCONNED.

GODDAMMIT.

Does it really matter though, he's still effectively Big Boss and the real Big Boss does end up dying in MG2 anyway

...until he doesn't thanks to MGS4.

Kojima is a hack. For his retcons alone, he should be ashamed.

Disgraceful.

How in the world can you not keep up with the goings-on in a series that you yourself created?!?

maybe he changed his mind about snake's revenge and made it canon

that why cyborg big boss was actually venom

so it makes sense that the big boss we see in 4 and mg2 isn't a cyborg

:^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^)

His hard on for everything Big Boss and The Boss ruined the series for me. He doesn't even have the balls to make Big Boss appear evil.

No, the tanks will spawn as the mission starts. They just aren't marked. Same for the "capture the jeeps going to the meeting" side-objective of Mission 8/Red Brass. You can run north with the horse, DOO IT the Jeep. Fulton, move to the south. DOO IT, fulton and then get the last commander by going through the town to the meeting place at night without ever touching the intel.

Same with a few other missions like that. Mission 16 being a notable one.

People don't keep binders for series they write as they go. It's a common thing with writers as well. A lot of people don't think they're going to make a sequel so they don't keep references of things in line. It happens in movies, it happens in games (helllllo Mass Effect and their "B-B-BUT WE DID HONEST GUYS!"), it happens in TV, it happens in Comics (ESPECIALLY IN COMICS)...

I doubt Kojima 28 years earlier was thinking he was going to make 10+ titles for his MSX/NES game.
