That sahelanthropus figure is gonna be mine... saw it having a 36,000 yen price tag, hoping its around $300 in the US.

I only have one mission left (46), which judging by this thread is just a replay of the prologue. Chapter two was significantly weaker, and like others mention feels rushed and unfinished. Pretty torn on the game to be honest. On one hand the gameplay is seriously some of the best in any genre, really refined. The only glaring issue I have with the "game" aspect of it is movement over terrain. Sometimes BB can't walk over something 2 feet high lol. But I disliked revisiting the same camps/locations for different missions, made level design feel stale. Wish we had more varied locations to infiltrate ala Ground Zeroes. Konami and budget was probably why a lot of the same locations were used. One of the best games of the year for me, but have flaws preventing it from being on of the greats in my book. It did have its awesome moments though.

Since a lot of you have already beat the game am sure you have noticed, but I can understand why Kiefer HAD to voice BB. Obviously it was because it really was not Snake lol. The medic's appearance may change into looking like Snake, but not his vocal chords!

The real Big Boss was also voiced by Sutherland.

Interesting. I liked MGS4's codec a lot but it only had two consistent people you could call in Otacon and Rose. Was sorely missing a robust codec team, and then it vanished entirely after that. Rising's codec was done better than any codec since MGS3.

I was very much disappointed with MGS4's Codec and didn't like the way in which Peace Walker's tapes were presented. MGSV seems to try to be the in between having it real time via Radio contact and Tapes that play in real time (but get talked over by Radio, which sucked and was annoying).

Rising is pretty much the last Metal Gear to feature legit Codec. I miss that shit, man. :(

"Alright, so I was thinking about making a character. She'll be an assassin, the most formidable female soldier Big Boss will have met since The Boss"

"Cool"

"She'll try to assassinate Big Boss in the opening mission, and she'll almost succeed"

"Alright, this sounds good"

"She'll nearly die. She'll be burned alive, but revived by the super power parasites. She'll become an ultra-badass sniper - better than The End"

"Uh ... right ..."

"But the super powers will come at a cost. She'll need to breath through her skin ... see, her lungs were burned, yeah, everything else heals though ... because the parasites nest in the lungs! She doesn't speak too."

"... because of the burned lungs"

"No, the parasites. She'll spread them if she speaks."

"... the ones that gave her super powers?"

"No, different ones."

"..."

"She'll develop a relationship with Big Boss. If you take her out on missions she'll bend over and show you her ass when you're in your helicopter."

"... Mr. Kojima ... I'm begging y-"

"To breathe through her skin she'll wear a bikini and ripped tights. She'll drink by absorbing rainwater with her breasts"

"Mr. Kojima ... nevermind. Ok, sir."

Please stop throwing shade on the best part of the story.

It was telegraphed though, wasn't it? Quiet as fanservice. Kojimastation and all that. Although I admit the rain scene came out of nowhere.

EDIT: Also did Madonna's "Like Prayer" pop into anyone else's head during that scene?

Codecs, Boss encounters, "lolsrs" juxtapositions...

Oddly enough, Revengeance was the most Metal Gear feeling thing I've played since Snake Eater and it's not even in the same damn genre. The only thing that felt legitimately out of place was Armstrong and that just felt more like a perfect fusion of Metal Gear and Platinum's usual craziness.

Just talking to a good buddy of mine. We were discussing MB.

As it has been established, and i think this is pretty much across the board the same opinion. MB is under utilized. It felt like it was never completed, and never reached the potential it was presented it to be at.

Mission 43, relies on you to care about your soldiers. Honestly, i felt like this was not important at the time. But the more i think about it, the impact of you caring for them would be a bigger blow to your gut when the time comes. We even discussed you killing one of your buddies in this mission.

But mostly. we talked about MB. I think Paz does a great job at giving you a taste of living at MB in her tapes. Its an awesome place. People train, people move and have chats, people play soccer, or bust into fights over nothing. Like BB and Kaz fighting naked. The thing is. MB is an empty "shell" (notice that reference to MGS2 right there.) If they had more interactions of a small city alive, then i think you loosing members of MB would be more meaningful, and not only that. You come to terms to why Kaz and VB lust for revenge.

We talked they should have done a hacky soccer playtime, where they hack from PES or something, i dunno. Things to get you involved in the game and appreciate MB. Right now you never interact with it directly. Only the target practice.. and those are a waste of time.

We both agreed that one of the most successful sequences in a MGS game was that ladder in MGS3. It just works... it creates emotion... and its just good. We compared that to the ride in the jeep with Skullface... and that whole segment was just embarrassing. Not to mention the awkward moment where they stop talking already, and Sins of the Father starts playing. VB at no point reacts to Skullface... he just has this blank look on his face through the whole ride. So why let you look at both of them? Why not make this scene first person, and really make some great motion capture and facial expressions with Skullface? at least that would've engaged me more.

Anyways.... just food for thought i guess. Call me out on any BS. After all... i never really know what i am talking about. :)

Yeah, actually interacting with your motherbase staff in a meaningful way and/or have more narrative and story around the people there would go a long way making your MB feel more alive and make you care more for your soldiers. Ultimately, making mission 43 something more personal and remorseful.

Maybe the game could've kept track of which soldiers you interacted and played with the most and have them appear in the quarantine zone for a better effect even.

I'm going to come out and say it but how much did people need in the story. I know people are like what about the child solders he trained and what about him turning evil... In metal gear solid 2 it made a specific point to say the past is based upon the interpretation based off who controls the present. Which were the Patriots. How much of what we 'knew' was completely true? Big Boss wasn't an evil person but was twisted through out the events of his life. He was fighting for his ideals. The story ended where metal gear started. The series is done there doesn't need to be anymore. It has come about as full circle as it can.

I think a lot of people were thinking that we were going see Solid again in a metal gear remake in the second part of MGS V. That's where a lot of dissapointment seems to be stemming from. Kojima did set that up a bit with the Sutherland role and we all took the bait.

I was honestly expecting some grand pan or view in tandem with Sins of the Father during the truck ride.

When it turned out to be three minutes of awkward dead air, I simply thought the game glitched. After seeing everyone talking about that exact moment online, I was sad to see the truth of the matter. Someone somewhere actually thought that was a good idea.

And then we get lust for revenge scene immediately afterwards just to remind us how stupid things actually are.

What I found funny about the jeep ride is you are on your way to try to get to Skull Face before he can depart on his helicopter, but when you get there he is okay with revealing his plot to you, but then chooses to go in the jeep.

We were right at the helicopter Why couldn't Skull Face invite Venom onto the helicopter and cut the trip time (and awkward silence time). There is that helipad at the destination as well. It would have also allowed a good panning shot too.

The smallest detail needed an overly complicated explanation just because.

The thing is... as a writer, you can explain *anything*. But that doesn't mean you should. And in Kojima's case, this is one of his biggest weaknesses, in my opinion. As a reader or gamer, you sometimes want to have some mystery in your story. Some subtle hints here and there, but still mysterious enough to keep things open to interpretation. That's how MGS 1 - 3 felt to me.

I think MGS4 was the worst in this regard, but then again, V gave us a story where we were playing as a false Big Boss... just because. I get it, I get it... under the right circumstances, anyone can become Snake, bla bla bla. Sounds cool in theory, but it's already been done in MGS2 and that game did it so much better, too. Hell, the 'twist' was only the beginning in that game. Here it ends on a similar twist, only difference is that it's much weaker and is just doesn't feel right.

Well said.

Also, Kojima kept his need/like for an aerial command center [the Nomad] from MGS4 by incorporating the ACC into MGSV. This only serves to show that he remembered something he has utilized in the past, but yet he forgets important plot points and thus retcons things to make up for that weakness.

It is inexcusable, really.

I think that was a problem. The outbreak on the Quarantine Zone, possibly having to kill Quiet, etc. were supposed to begin (further) BB's descent into darkness, but they didn't, not even for fake BB. His character was pretty static throughout the whole thing, honestly.

The drinking shower scene is made especially gross when you realize that's a bunch of parasites wriggling underneath her skin.

There is literally no reason to be this big of a dick, brau. Come on, bro.

well.. it was either that... or the over used "ashamed of your words and deeds"

if someone should be apologizing that should be Kojima. not me! NOT ME!!!

The whole Patriots propaganda thing goes out the window when we directly encounter him in MG2. When he himself admits to being a warmonger who wants to perpetuate a cycle of death . How Solid Snake is constantly tortured by nightmares because the man he trusted turned out to be a monster right in front of his eyes, leading him to retire and hole up in Alaska.

The only way to get around this is to straight up say MG1/2 arent canon anymore(the later games sure do treat them like they aren't) and/or remake them.

Aren't the parasites more like bacteria instead of vermin? I don't think they wiggle normally. Code Talker said they take the place of the lung without anyone realizing becuase they look and work like a lung.

Parasites are just the new explanatory magical McGuffin ala nanomachines. Sometimes it doesn't make sense but they can do pretty much anything so it doesn't have to!

alright... has this been discussed?

I know this is from GZ... but... was it ever explained why Chico stuck his headphones on his chest?

Also, i feel like they built a lot of importance to his character to just have him killed in the helicopter.

I mean... i am one of the few that chuckled that he was dead. But seriously? thats it?

He was probably going to become Quiet but Kojima saw the fan response and axed it.

It's probably why they had to delay the game.

50 shades of grey?

This was an amazing chain of posts.

With head-canon I've come up with

Skull Face used Chico as a test subject for the Parasites virus - a "Ground Zero." I believe there were theories about it being self-mutilation, but don't recall if they were ever confirmed by cassette tapes or not. Either way, I really hate that Chico was killed off-screen. He was an awesome character - whether people liked him or not, within the course of a game he grew up rather quickly. His only downfall was loving one of his comrades - a lesson Snake himself had learned ten years prior.

I figured out the twist to this game by accident. I was goofing off in the ACC listening to cassettes and accidentally saw Venom's reflection in the chopper window. And like, from there it was pretty easy piecing together everything considering the Medic's voice in GZ and the first trailer for the game having Kaz with the "what about him?" line.

Which brings me to my point anyhow, I hated how damn near everything in this fuckin game was in the trailers. Almost every major scene, some even from the ENDING.

The worst part is that none of the cutscenes in context are anywhere near as cool as they were in the trailers haha.

Ugh. This game, man. What a disappointment.

Man, I really looked forward to seeing Big Boss going insane and turn into the warmongering asshole he was in Metal Gear 1/2.

Just look at this and imagine.

Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake , Big Boss: The nightmares? They never go away, Snake. Once you've been on the battlefield, tasted the exhilaration, the tension... it all becomes part of you. Once you've awakened the warrior within... it never sleeps again. You crave ever bigger tensions, ever bigger thrills. As a mercenary, I'd think you would have realized that by now. You care nothing for power, or money, or even sex. The only thing that satisfies your cravings is war! All I've done is give you a place for it. I've given you a reason to live.

It really feels like Kojima was afraid of painting up Big Boss as evil and corrupted, even tho that's his character arc and pretty much the point of his character in the MGS saga....

Really, the game would be much more interesting if it was about how the real Big Boss became corrupted by his anger with his perverted vision of what The Boss wanted and how he created his own nation etc.

"To breathe through her skin she'll wear a bikini and ripped tights. She'll drink by absorbing rainwater with her breasts"

"Mr. Kojima ... nevermind. Ok, sir."
It's also worth noting that she has to wear a thong because she breathes through her butt. She also eats through it. Through her butt.

i like how volgin and eli spend this whole game being mad at the wrong guy
The execution of theme "revenge" sucks like the hallucinations. As you said, those two are mad at the wrong guy, Kaz just over the top all the time, we never knew why the horse was angry, Venom has no actual stake, Skullface is less revengeful than power hungry, the whale never destroyed a whaling ship and I don't know why Quiet wanted revenge from Venom, for all she knew the other guy tried to kill her and maybe set her on fire. Huey was afain the only goid execution, but only because he was supposed to suck.

I really wish they were all less angry and more sarcastic.

kojima fell too in love with his own creation
big boss is now seen as a hero in the eyes of those who live on the gaming world

I didn't understand his closure. The more i think about it, the more it made sense to have Chico be Quiet. That at least would've been a good laugh after all the booty and sexual posing. haha

Anyways... he was just discarded, when in GZ i felt he was presented as a key character that would have something to say during TPP.

Man... if Chico was Quiet, can you imagine the response of people? riots would've ensued.

It was just weird.. the headphones... it was not even on the throat.. so... i guess it was in the lungs, so maybe he was infested with Parasites. No idea.

lol, I forgot about the horse.

Is that The Boss' horse? The one that Big Boss cripples in Peace Walker by forcing it to run up a 89° incline, then executes because it couldn't make it?

I'd be pretty pissed at him too.

yeah I thought grown up Chico would be one of the main guys with a hard on for revenge, Kaz could've split his crippled anger with Chico.

I can imagine him constantly guilt tripping you about his and Paz's torture and pushing you down the rabbit hole.

Ishmael's tiny on-screen appearance is so great now. He reminds me so much of MGS3 era Snake.

Witty, energetic, confident. The few lines he had just scream Big Boss in hindsight.

Venom barely speaks in this one. Most of the time it's a whisper. Avoids eye contact. Doesn't even react to life threatening situations.

The funeral scene was absolutely amazing but other than that, he's Gordon Freeman with a mullet and an eye patch.

Big Boss is a charismatic motherfucker. Wish Venom was too.

Sadface

It was just weird.. the headphones... it was not even on the throat.. so... i guess it was in the lungs, so maybe he was infested with Parasites. No idea.

To me the idea was that someone could listen to the parasites speak to them, like Code Talker can.

Venom is when he feels like it. The fight scene and the funeral scene in particular stand out.

He is really nothing like Big Boss but is an incredibly charming character when he actually talks. I feel more wasted potential in Venom's characterization than I do in not playing Big Boss's downfall.

Also, who didn't love him and Kaz giving off Pulp Fiction vibes?

Again and again i keep going back to wishing this game was about the downfall of big boss into madness, instead of a doppleganger that has no personality.

It would've been so good to have allucinations from Big Boss... being haunted by his own demons.

To me the idea was that someone could listen to the parasites speak to them, like Code Talker can.

So chico was navajo?
