My biggest question is why didn't the real Big Boss do anything in those 9 years following the events of Ground Zeroes? I remember Ishmael saying he watched over Venom Snake/medic for the last 9 yrs so we know he wasn't in a coma. Why didn't he make contact with Miller and try to rebuild mother base sooner? It just doesn't make any sense or am I just missing something.

Why's Alaska his go-to place to drink?

Not sure, it makes sense for the Solid to drink in Alaska after MGS1 since Shadow Moses is right next to it.

If I were to guess, Alaska seems like a mystic lonely place. Solid Snake does seem like a loner going by how he was characterized in MGS1. He was a loner until he met Otacon that is.

Someone in the thread mentioned how when you're doing the FOB tutorial mission, the former MSF solider-turned-nutter says he heard rumors that the real BB was doing shit elsewhere (building nations and all that), which is what set him off.

Every mission is so dense. Every single mission has so many things going on. And Skullface is the key to all of it because MGS has never had a funnier character. Sheev Boss is the best Boss in the series.

Dense.

Thank you, I really needed that laugh

He raises the war orphans to become soldiers, but it's never stated that he employs child soldiers, we don't see anything like that in Metal Gear 2.

I'm pretty sure it was implied, but yeah you don't outright see any children (technical limitations maybe, this being a MSX title). It doesn't really matter tho, the guy was insane and kidnapped children and groomed them for his army to fight in wars.

Yeah, despite the story disappointing on so many fronts, I'd still play MGSV over any other game in sight. It's one of my all-time favorite games-- on its gameplay alone.
Same.

It's too damn fun to play for it to not be in the running for GOTY at least. With Persona 5 delayed, it's probably going to win my vote.

Here too.

I can't fathom being so upset about the story that I would stop playing the game or loving it based on it's gameplay, even now at 180 hours.

I love going back to old mgs games and playing them, the gameplay on most still hold up today even considering of the advancements of 4 and 5. I can always go back to the old games and feel refreshed. I went back to MGSV today and felt nothing, i didnt feel as excited, I was going to outposts and doing sideops, before I beat the game I was enthusiastic to do these things. After the ending and finding out we play as a fraud and fake I feel I just cant do it, the fact we havent become a demon, just a poser and not the real man really hurts the game. The fact this is cannon and that Venom is the one that dies in MG1 just takes so much away from big boss. I was hoping for the downfall of the legendary hero and I got someone pretending to be it yet still no downfall.

Eh.. Big Boss was in a coma for 9 years - the medic was kept in a coma until Big Boss would wake up. Hence the "V has come to" phonecall. After waking up, Ocelot visits him and tells him about Zero's plan to use a doppelganger - the medic.

The "I've been watching over you for 9 years" is just to throw you off balance thinking that he's a hallucination.

I imagine this looks pretty trippy when you're krunk all the time

I've just finished the game, I don't think I've ever been underwhelmed by an ending like that.

What the hell is this ?

I have zero doubt that Konami higher ups have had a heavy influence on the story.

They want to keep the franchise going .. obviously.

So, to complete the game, I played for about 45 hours. That doesn't include me finishing some of the main mission and side ops. With those, I'm probably at 70 hours or so...

Which means this is probably the most I've played any MGS game. And, yet, if I had to rank the MGS games, I would probably go 2>3>1>4>5 or 2>3>1>5>4, which makes no sense. Despite how fun the game is to play, it is one of my least favorite MGS games.

The schism that this game creates in my mind is as deep as the Mariana Trench. Never has my head and my heart split so much by a game.

Obviously.

It wasn't Kojima's fault at all, obviously.

The pacing is all over the place, I can't believe most of the main missions are filler/glorified side-ops. Even considering just Chapter 1, a plot related mission list would be something like this

01 - Phantom Limbs
06 - Where Do The Bees Sleep?
11 - Cloaked in Silence [BOSS FIGHT]
12 - Hellbound
13 - Pitch Dark [I'm trying to be nice here, but since it's the introduction to Africa and it relates to the epidemic later in the story I'm going to count it]
16 - Traitors Caravan [I guess the Skulls are there and the cargo is sort of important]
20 - Voices
23 - The White Mamba
28 - Code Talker
29 - Metallic Archae [BOSS FIGHT]
30 - Skull Face
31 - Sahelantropus [BOSS FIGHT]

Nine missions and three boss fights. 18-19 missions are unconsequential (I could see counting as plot-related "Blood Runs Deep" too since it introduces the child soldiers). No wonder all the major themes and characters feel underdeveloped. Don't get me wrong, some of the "filler" missions are really good to play too, but if we're talking about the story it feels like playing what barely survived a cutting room floor.

And Chapter 2 is another beast entirely....what a waste.

Well i've finished the story stuff, must say i'm as underwhelmed as everyone else seems to be and i've only read 3 pages of this thread lol. Don't get me wrong, i like the story but it just leaves me asking more questions really. The last time i felt like this was when i finished Mass Effect 3.

There was clearly suppose to be a chapter 3, right?

Maybe it will be DLC? Right?

Guys pls.

As soon as the true ending happened this was all I could think of:

Oddly enough there being two Big Bosses actually ties into the events of MG1/MG2 and MGS4. This just makes me want a Kojima made MG1/MG2 remake EVEN MORE!

Don't even care about Kojima since the story already exists, I just want another indoor-focussed MG after replaying 2 this week. Enough outdoors.

He raises the war orphans to become soldiers but it's never stated that he employs child soldiers, we don't see anything like that in Metal Gear 2.

*sigh*

Everyone who plays the series should see this scene.

Even if you have, and you are using a technicality to make your point; that we never see children, acting as soldiers in MG2, the point stands that his end goal with every single one is to brainwash them in Zanzibar Land to become soldiers he can feed to the fire. Zanzibar Land as a nation only produces war, the only future for its citizens, the children seen throughout the game and the soldiers acting as enemies, is war, and eventually a gruesome death.

Sorry for spamming this, but this is so fucking good:

There isn't much else do to in the winter indoors.

All valid reasons. Nice. I've always wanted to see Alaska.

We're going even deeper.

I've always maintained that Kojima is the George Lucas of Video Games, and MGS, the Star Wars.

Did I miss the scene from the trailer that opened with Snake stepping over corpses in Africa with the bird picking at them? Was it cut from the game? I'll try to find the link on YouTube but on mobile atm.

So I'm at 63%, saw the true ending, and just watched Episode 51. I have so many mixed emotions. On one hand this is without a doubt the best Metal Gear games as far as graphics and gameplay go. I am addicted to going back and doing the missions over, getting all the extras. It's gorgeous.

Even story wise there's a lot of cool things that this one did. Child soldiers, the parasites, language, even the metal gear fight was cool. But with all that being said watching episode 51 made my heart sink. I think the feud with Konami and Kojima hurt the production and we could have gotten and even more satisfying ending. I think when all of this was happening and a scheduled release date was on the horizon, Kojima had to make some unfortunate cuts, and for that I aim my disappointment in Konami and not him.

But thinking about there being two Boss's and Kojima's real point being there with you creating the face and the game overall wanting you to feel like Boss...is actually really cool. We've all went on a wild ride with Kojima over the years and Kojima is saying hey, you're Big Boss. You've played all these games and you've conquered the series. I think that is good enough for me. Would I have wished for that unfinished mission to be there and a little more coherence? Absolutely, but man, I got the feeling a lot of actually being Big Boss in this one and to be met with that ending solidified those feeling. It also like others have said can be used to explain MG1 and MG2.

These theories to rationalize the twist go places. Craziest I have heard is Skull Face is Big Boss' previous phantom who upon learning the truth, went mad and cut off his face. What?

The funny part is, that would actually be kind of cool if it was even remotely hinted at or revealed in the plot.

Most of these fan theories just come for desperation for some kind of meaning or solid direction, but they're not all terrible.

Same thing happened with Mass Effect 3

Maybe I'm justifying, but I think the main problem with MGSV is time and budget. With ME 3, it's hubris; a writer thought he was more clever and smarter than his audience, and it turned out the Emperor had no clothes.

There's nothing worse than someone thinking they are smart and clever and falling flat on their face because it is an insult to me and a disgrace on their part.

Is there a good way to emulate the MGS games on PC? I can get a copy of the legacy edition (ps3) but I'd rather run it on my PC if possible.

Want to run through MGS1 and maybe 3 again, after I finish my 2nd playthrough of 5.

Why doesn't ocelot meow in this game?

He meowed like all the time in MGS3.
Everyone did stupid shit as a teenager/young adult

This Ocelot is like the Jimmy we see in Better Call Saul. Wants to leave his more interesting self behind to be a good guy but can't get rid of his sadistic tendencies (torture) so just goes full HAM on the villain business

I realize the holes in this comparison but it felt good making it

MGS1 does not require an emulator. It has a pc version. But use EPSXE if you want to play the PS1 version.

MGS2 also does not require an emulator but the pc version has issues to get working.

If your cpu is up to it, use PCSX2 for MGS2 and MGS3.

MGS4 is not available on an emulator in any remotely working fashion.
