Man, the fate of Paz really made me sad.

I genuinely hoped that she survived. After all the shit she went through after Peace Walker, even being a broken amnesiac was preferable to what really happened. At least she'd still be on Mother Base with the others who'd take care of her.

Moreso, both Paz and Chico were characters worth giving second life to for an audience who only played the mainline MGS games.

I think both Big Boss as Solid Snake are good characters. All this talk about who is better...

She was pretty much a brainwashed orphan, a puppet to Zero. And MGS is known for its villains being worthy of some sympathy, most the time. Wiki:

Pacifica Ocean was raised in the United States from a very young age.[2] She was taken in by Cipher after becoming an orphan, and felt that she owed him her life. However, her loyalty was partially born out of fear, as she believed that disobeying Cipher would result in "a fate far worse than death".

Still tried to squish BB with Zeke, so meh.

Did you play GZ or read up on her history? It's less her death, than what happened leading up to it. She was beaten and brutalized by Skull Face, partly because of her newfound loyalty to Big Boss. Hell, she could've taken out BB and Miller with her in the explosion if she was inclined.

In MGS6 we get another retcon and a game building up to a twist where it turns out Liquid was not Liquid and it was actually really Miller all along orchestrating an elaborate plot with Cipher to fiddle Big Boss back with the MGS4 Foxdie. Also in a quadruple mobius retcon after realizing that Huey was right all along Big Boss is forced to hear a looped tape consisting of "Santa Claus isn't real" on repeat during his ten years being comatose.

solid snake is way cooler than big boss
- got betrayed by his mentor and killed his ass twice instead of crying about it for 10 years
- is best friends with an otaku
- has a cute daughter
- quits smoking
- was prepared to kill himself instead of becoming a biological weapon
- decides to never use CQC for 20 years and still uses it better than anyone else
- has an ending to his story
- didnt get into fights with old british men
- once took down a metal gear using a metal gear
- remenber the memes, jack
- once dived about 20 meters into the new york coastline to chase down a metal gear
- can break free of metal handcuffs on his own
- kept you waiting huh
- brings non lethal weapons into his missions by own choice
- can see with his two eyes
- not a tool or the government or anyone else
- best friends with three cyborg ninjas
- can summon the ghost of his dead brother into an old man's body
- got half of his face burned rescuing his mom
- always repeats everything he's told?
- is friends with a black dude and a monkey
- playboy magazines increase his psyche
- microwave
- knows how numbers work, especially 0 and 1

Explain

So at what point in the future does Venom Boss go away and the real Big Boss become the only one? Because real Big Boss joins Foxhound or whatever and sends Snake to go kill Venom Boss right? This is the most confusing part to wrap my head around.

He basically adopted Sunny with Otacon.

She has two dads (or "uncles" since she refers to Otacon as Uncle Hal). Though I think canonically after the events of MGS4 she's considered Otacon's legal adoptive daughter.

Venom dies in MG1.

anyone feel like being angrier at konami?

yeah but is solid snake the hero of beating up old slavs in a jungle?
didn't think so

makes me sad to see those mgs3 Ocelot gifs considering how pointless and abysmal he is in this game.

He's a non-character.

Imagine any scene but with him swapped out with a new guy called "Frank the Interrogator." Frank's sole defining characteristics are his niceness, his obedience to Venom, and his uncanny ability to ask expository questions.

Notice how nothing changes.

I'll add to Solid Snake
-Gives villains resolution before giving them a peaceful death.
-Has a secret handshake
-Tears up when Emma dies
-Cares for his subordinate (Raiden)
-Teaches Raiden to think for himself
-Gives Raiden a handgun to protect himself
-Fights for his ideals, not for revenge
-Has multiple awesome fist fights
-Very knowledgeable, enough to keep up with Otacon

He's a solid Snake clone, but worst. Only compelling thing about him is his eyepatch.

Ironically I think it's at the same time that he loses his eye that he develops a bit more of personality. There's the good scene with Ocelot during his escape, he questions the existence of The Sorrow via codec, there's the scene with the C3, some more natural interactions with EVA, in the last showdown with Ocelot you can see a newfound confidence, and of course the ending. Nothing incredible considering Solid Snake's evolution in MGS1-2 but it was something for an origin story. It's just that in the other three games (four with Ground Zeroes I guess) he never managed to develop these traits. There were some glimpses of evolution, but not much else.

Big Boss never really needed a descent into madness, but he drastically needed some agency of his own.
Show me how and why he is a legendary soldier, not just because "he killed a legendary soldier whose actually mission was to die by his hands"
Show me the charisma that moved Frank Jaeger, Naomi Hunter, Sniper Wolf and many others to follow him and consider him a savior and a hero, not just some humorous remark like "You're the best Boss!"
Show me how he created loyal mercenary groups, and not just because he was "convinced" to do it by Miller who wanted to try a new business.
Show me how and why he decided to resurrect the fucking Illuminati and then turn on them and on the world, not because his friends, his lover and his fanboy tricked him into it.
Show him consciously deciding to build a nuclear weapon to face the world, not because the weapon itself or the components fell on his lap (and others he had to aquire through grinding sidequests in the post-game).
He didn't need to be a madman, burning children left and right. But in four games dedicated to him, I barely see a man aknowledging his actions and his mistakes (even the Venom Snake stuff it's not his fault, Zero did it!), and above all I never saw a man ready to let the world burn to realize his dream and vision.

I'm actually pretty enthusiastic overall about the story in mgsv but ocelot was a huge disappointment.

Big Boss is a character that was better when he was a legend. Kojima did him a disservice by making a game on him and continue making pointless sequels for him. He's a better character just by being in the shadow. I liked the concept of Liquid and Solid trying to fight being in the shadow of Big Boss.

Big Boss:
- isn't even a legend, he was too scared running away from Cipher while the player avatar did everything
