I hope everyone that decided it was okay to not outright warn players that they would lose a buddy by doing an automatically triggered mission never works in game development again.

They need to patch in a way to bring her back, even her picture is gone from the ACC, pft

You know what, here's a better question. Why the fuck did quiet walk into my room to kill me? She's a fucking super-elite sniper. I know this from first hand experience with her destroying entire bases single-handedly. Even if she didn't have the inviso-powers the wolbachia gave her. Girl's way more capable than the prologue would suggest.

Maybe she just didn't have a clear shot? Venom wasn't that close to the window. Plus she'd want to verify up-close that it's him.

That would undermine the impact of her leaving. I really think they made her so ridiculous as a buddy because players would actually miss her. It's not like she's a compelling character outside of that.

So me and a friend asked each other the same thing earlier today. Was quiet unmasked originally? Granted, she in mission 46 didn't look too much like the Quiet i got familiar with over the course of the game, but still I feel like I woulda been like "that's totally Quiet" the first time through. Also, did The Man On Fire look more obviously like Volgin the second time around, or was it just cuz I already knew? I swear at one point he was wearing his old uniform. I do wish there were more stark differences or something to give the second playthrough more meaning. Cuz yeah, it's a pretty boring scripted sequence.

It's pretty obviously Volgin.

His build, his bare(r) arms, the bullets across his chest, the uniform (same cut shirt, same boots with the red rings around them).

As soon as he was in the first trailer most players were thinking Volgin I think.

Does MGSV have the worst opening in the franchise in terms of replay value? The crawling, following linear path, very cinematic, drags on. Feels like a far cry from MGS2's incredibly replayable opening.

I think it does. But it's not just replay value. Even the first time I played it I was extremely disappointed with how scripted it was. I would've preferred either a straight cutscene or just let me play the whole thing uninterrupted.

Going halfway between full directed cutscene, and full player control, just leaves you in a weird, weird limbo that is just annoying and slow. It would help a bit if the gameplay parts were a little longer and less interrupted, or just continuous.

Best parts of the introduction were the scripted parts. Why it needs the weird tutorial crap is beyond me.

I would say yes, Though I don't dislike the MGS V intro its just not replayable due to what you mentioned.

so when and how exactly did Ocelot and Miller create Diamond Dogs? And how did they last this long considering every second of the game they seem ready to tear each other's throats out?

There's a lot PW does better, chief among them Mother Base management.

MGS V has a lot of regressive, looked down system. You've identified the most frustrating aspect - why can't I just deploy my 16 tanks?

Maybe they were planning all that for Kingdom of Flies sequence? The cut scene indicates that most of Diamond Dogs are with you in that boss battle. They could have you going thru something like the end of Dragon Age: Origins where you use up what you gather for the final battle. Maybe even Battle Gear!

Long enough to merchandise out a Leather Jacket for the real Big Boss.

The most obvious one was Quiet's theme playing as she choked your ass out. lol

In terms of replayability? Yes. But it was so good I'll let the scripted and linear nature of it pass. It may not have any replay value, but damn that was an incredible experience playing it for the first time.

GZ being a separate game released over a year before is still super weird. It's like if the tanker was a separate game. I can't help but think it was a total business oriented decision to release them piecemeal like that

definitely in terms of replay value

it was pretty cool the first time, though

I didn't even mind it the second time, cause I knew something about it would change and blow my mind

but playing the game again? it's gonna suck ass.

The worst thing about the structure? It's going to fucking suck going back to the game for a replay. Playing 1,2,3,4,GZ will be fine but this? Jesus all the grinding, badly paced missions and random jarring mission structure I do not think this is going to hold up to future replays at all.

if gz released alongside pp, the opening would be almost as good as the tanker. Almost because i don't think anything can beat that tank chapter in terms of awe. The rain effect still look cool to me to this day

I've never been sure about that. Actually Kojima has talked about wanting to release Ground Zeroes very soon after Peace Walker on the consoles available at the time, probably to wrap that up and set-up MGSV then.

I think Kojima wanted to start the game with you waking up from a coma.

in retrospect, yes it is obvious, but i'm askin if his appearance in the second playthrough was the same as the first. also i was a dummy who didn't realize eli was liquid until the final timeline credit scroll :\

Yup.

Especially with the Mother Base management and sparse plot I could see this being a drag to start again.

The V stands for Venom.

bu-bu-but that's a codename. they gave him that before hand? and why would they give him such a "poisonous" codename. I interpreted it as 5 in the sense that the other 4 were Big Boss and the 3 enfants terribles. But then there is also something with "Vic" or "Victor" on the back of the picture you turn over, but I didn't quite understand that. Was that my name before I became Venom?

His uniform definitely changed for a brief moment.

So I'm not crazy?!

Oh I know MGSV isn't 5. But would the next game have been MGS5? Or was Peace Walker actually 5 so the next game would be 6?

Just a little detail after hearing the Giant Bomb spoilercast. They were thinking the next game would have been the real MGS5 but I'm thinking Peace Walker is still the real MGS5 to Kojima.

They also thought they cut Mission 51 as part of their plan for a Liquid game.

That part seems off.

I really wanted to marathon the whole series in one go but V would be such a massive road block. Not even just structure wise but also due to it being a big pile of nothing.

I actually can't believe this.

I know, right? During playthrough I kept talking to my friend like "is this actually Raiden? I will be pissed if this is Raiden". I never made the connection that it was the most obvious other blonde haired character in the series Despite the DNA test stuff and the fact he says "father" in reference to BB multiple times. To save face, I will chalk it up to the fact that I never actually played MGS1 but only watched lets plays of it.

Some topics of the game are really interesting, it's a pitty that it's really unbalanced in terms of narrative. The story really lacks impact and I felt emotionally disconected and when the game tried to grab me it was really weird... mostly lame.

The best thing this game has done with the story (for me) in terms of presentation is episode 43, that was stellar.

The 'V' stands for jack shit, canonically.

'V has come to' as a phrase came from someone's ass. "Oh, but he's the fifth Snake". Sure, so why isn't it "Fifth has come to"? 'V' =/= the Roman numeral for '5' when it is spoken like that.

And nobody calls him Venom Snake in-game, anyway.

Doesn't Ocelot call you that early in the game? I remember something how they talk about how you're reborn, filled with revenge (lol) and so Venom is a better name.

Well I guess the tanker part was part of the MGS2 demo as well :P

So who is going to start a backlash thread? Finished it a couple of days ago and just keep thinking about how disappointed I am. Don't really want to go back to it. Also feel like I better understand the MGS2 backlash now.
