Leading up to this game I only watched a brief bit of the E3 trailer, so I'm coming to the realization after the fact, but the disparity between the trailer of "Snake dropping to his knees, covered in blood amongst the smoldering remains of innocent civilians and going NUUUUUUUCLEAAAARR!" vs. what happens in game of coming across 3 destroyed huts and Ocelot saying "That used to be a settlement, now it's burned to the ground" is absolutely farcical. Some of these full dissections on youtube and discussions make me realize just how disappointed I would have been after playing 70 hours and realizing almost all the poignant cutscenes were already shown.

Game would be a 10/10 if you only spent like 25 hours on it, didn't really finish the game and watched the rest of the cutscenes through some other means while not doing the numerous repetitive side ops.

In that review environment even I would've probably given the game that high of a score.

"OMFG 60FPS OPEN WORLD STEALTH ACTION GAME WITH AMAZING CONTROLS! REALISTIC WEATHER SIMULATION! DAY NIGHT CYCLE! DAT BASE MANAGEMENT! SO MANY WEAPONS/TOOLS! LIMITLESS APPROACHES TO STEALTH! 100+ HOURS OF GAME PLAY CONTENT! EPIC CUTSCENE MOMENTS WITH ZANY MGS STUFF! NO MORE HOUR LONG CUTSCENES! I CAN PLAY WITH CHICKEN HAT AND NOT USE STEALTH TO GET THROUGH THE GAME EASILY!"

The game has all the checklist that games which review well do.

We know this from the other games. Like I said.
Source? Even one?

You guys know, there is a phantom cigar you could to reset her.

Yes, but it isn't clear in how long you're supposed to use it. I figured that I would only have to wait 8-12 hours, but you actually have to wait a whole 24 hours before she wakes up again. It's stupid, because taking a helicopter ride back and forth to the base doesn't take 24 hours.

It doesn't matter anyway, she has nothing interesting to say. Her actually repeating voice samples near the end is just icing on the crap cake with that part of the game. If there was anything that should have been cut from the game, it should have been the Paz stuff.

I am about 180 hours in and nowhere near bored. I would give this a solid 9/10 due to the plot being unfinished and say it's the best mgs game since 1 and 3. Gameplay wise it takes a poop on both of those games from a great height so if that's all your in for its unquestionably not only the best metal gear but the greatest stealth action game of all time.

On what, the other guy's comment?

Or are you asking me on a source for there being other Metal Gear games?

Surely you're not asking for a source of my claims on the plot, since I said in the quoted comment "the other Metal Gear games."

So I dunno, we've got three possibilities here but none that make sense.

I don't think I could give it a number since I don't know how these review scores work but all I know is the gameplay, the mechanics specifically, is really good. However everything else including mission structure, story/characters and pacing make it my least favourite in the entire series. I think I can say that confidently now after putting this many hours into it. I actually don't feel like playing it anymore, I don't think I want to do another play through unlike previous MGS games. I'll wait for MGO3 and just enjoy the gameplay on that instead
until the servers go down again
.

I find it much easier to use a traditional letter grade system. Since everyone just translates numbers into grades anyway, cut out the middle man.

Of course, using an implicitly comparable and static rubric to evaluate art is kind of silly but such is life.

Quick question, was big boss in a come for 9 years too? I know vs was, but I was wondering if bb was just playing the long con or showed up when they heard vs woke up

Big Boss was slightly longer in coma than Venom. They just kept Venom artificially asleep until BB was awake. So yeah, BB was 9 years in a coma.

I'm just going to leave this here without comment

Literally took me almost a full listen to realise what was happening.

Then I giggled like a little girl.

But Venom big boss is a nice guy.The only person you see become a demon in V is Huey. Again they shouldn't have sold us the game on the fact it'd close the loop and we'd see Big Boss "become a monster" and then not do anything even close to that. Though you could argue it looks like Konami interference put a stop to some of the darker elements.

They wouldn't have had to force him to do anything. Just show us the real Big Boss doing the bad things we've been told he is capable of. Don't just allude to it off screen while we the player carry on the legend. It reeks of Kojima being too in love with the Big Boss character to do anything meaningful with him.

The twist also ruins one of the coolest things the game has...Liquid.

On the one hand, it was a big cocktease for Koji to promise all the 'become a demon' and 'missing link' stuff in trailers.

On the other hand, just enjoy it for what it is. A clever ploy of a twist which messed with what you expected but was just there to mess with you. Which is a fine reason, in my eyes. You can say the same of many classic twists. And it's a nice connection for how things went for Big Boss, more importantly the back-characters like Zero.

Venom was in an artificially induced coma and woken up once Big Boss did. It wasn't a coincidence they both woke up at the same time.

Hm, good point.

Just equip her last sniper rifle if the mission has helmeted guys?

Yeah, but then they find her fairly quickly, and she has to start dodging them. If there are a lot of enemies, they might put too much pressure on her.

That's very problematic in light of the MGS4 epilogue. Big Boss is seething with hate when he wheels out Zero before Solid Snake. He talks of a bitter rivalry motivated by fear and envy. I would have liked to have seen that rivalry played out in either Peace Walker or MGSV.

I also preferred it when the supernatural elements of the series were subtly hinted at either through Vamp's healing via water or the possession of Ocelot being explained by an ability passed onto him from his father, The Sorrow. It was a mistake not to embrace that. I think negative fan reaction played a huge role in shaping some of the more suspect aspects of the series.

According to the strategy guide, Ocelot's "Liquid" persona was a total ruse.

Mission 51 should really be in the game in some capacity. It's the biggest unresolved plot thread in the game and just because I know what the answer is doesn't make it okay that it was left that way in game.

Some sort result from the game constantly implying that Miler is going to wrong Venom somehow. There's that bit between him and Ocelot choosing a clone, but doesn't seem to be where that plot thread was going.

Venom doing anything that would justify the demon thing. Maybe the demon stuff was always supposed to be about Big Boss kind of becoming the thing he hated by doing what was done to The Boss to Venom, but it sure didn't feel that way. The most morally questionable thing he does in the game is continue training the child soldiers that doesn't seem to quite fit with narrative people were sold.

There should be a way to get Quiet back even if there's no narrative reason for it. It's crazy that you lose access to a fairly unique mechanic in an open world game for some emotional impact.

The damage is kind of done for anyone who beat the game, but remove the featuring parts of the credits at the start of each mission. That stuff really ruined a lot of surprises and I'm sure people who haven't played the game would appreciate it.

I agree with this so much.

But Venom doesn't train the child soldiers as soldiers. He makes sure they have at least one skill to take home with them besides war, so they have an opportunity to lead normal lives.

Am at 50% now. Was that it? All the mission just repeat it self? Really? So the ending was actually when SF died? And I have to repeat every mission just to find out that V is not BB?

This has probably been asked, but:

Remember when Kojima said/posted he went to Normandy for research? Is there anything in the game to justify him mentioning it?

The Quiet arc finishing seemed like a good place to end chapter 2. Who knows what the plan was originally.

I don't think I've come to Quiet ending something!! But am really fed up. Is that really it? I have to repeat all the mission after SF dies?

You do side ops and listen to tapes to unlock new missions, and for the Quiet stuff you need her bond at max I believe

It wasn't clever though it was obvious and unearned. People are trying to play the twist off like its MGS2.0 but its nothing like that it. The twist itself was expected because it was so bloody obvious and it detracts from the experience and the overall lore. I can't ignore that.

Couldn't disagree more.

Yeah I know that. But the question is: Are all the upcoming mission just a repeat?

Will there be any new characters? Or is the story just finished after SF dies? And the rest just repeating mission to unlock that V is not BB? Is that it?

just now reading about Paz stuff. her being actually in the medic's imagination, guilt of not finding the second bomb, and all

game is fucking baffling man. why would you put stuff like this (that is more story related than fucking.. anything else) to getting random pictures and showing them to her only if you find the blue room to begin with

good lord

Finally finished the whole game. Love some things, hate other things. It's an uneven experience and I really wish the game was not open world. To me, the uncovering of the linear world of MGS3 felt much larger and more alive than MGSV ever did.

But one question: They kick Huey out and leave him on that raft, and mention that one day his lies will catch up with him and haunt him. Assuming that all the accusations against Huey are true, are they implying that his suicide as mentioned in MGS2 was due to his past demons from this game, or did he just float back to America and live a merry life until his life became a hentai game come true?

The database confirms that Ocelot was indeed possessed in MGS2.

Another missed opportunity. The earlier post about Normandy will also fit into what I'm about to say.

I think it would have been a good idea to get the ball rolling on the start of a mutual relationship between Ocelot and the future foxhound members, specifically Mantis. See Ocelot had to fool the system by "grafting" liquids personality onto his own. I think that it would've been cool if Ocelot willingly went that far because he realised he actually had a supernatural element on his side, and in order for that to have more weight, he'd have to realise who his benefactors were.

By knowing this, by realising who his mother was and the sacrifice she made and his father's godlike ability to connect to the spirit world, he'd have the opportunity to surpass her AND the snakes themselves by fixing the colossal mess created in the wake of conflicting ideologies. You could think of mantis as the conduit through which he could connect.......you know what, fuck this. This is delusional poppycock. The damage is done...............god I just remembered that there is a movie in the works. Oh man........

Yeah it's really weird that it was hidden within the game because it really is one of the better moments and the final cutscene itself was one of the only emotional punches I felt in the game.

It's only heightened now after realising how much more depth was added to the scene due to the medic feeling guilty about it. Superbunnyhop really nailed how I feel towards that story arc and again, it's really one of my favourite moments in the game.

hmm.. i didn't even know it was a thing with other games. Should i check his MGSV stream?

I wouldn't recommend that for your sanity's sake.

Bump

Anyone?

You mean the "Battle Gear"? It's not really a Metal Gear, just an advanced tank that we never get to see in use, it's only use is being sent out on "combat deployments". I guess DD used it until it malfunctioned or something, I don't think anyone besides Huey could fix it.
