Abel >>>>> Any other SFIV Newbie

Look in your hearts and you'll see it's the truth.

(If we're picking between the ladies, I'm Team Viper though.)

Abel is iconic, without a doubt. But even though he's not popular like Abel, Seth is more iconic. He should be in the game more than Vega, who I don't like. Instead we'll probably just keep getting boring SF2 characters though.

Abel = Popular

Seth = Iconic

Zangief = Boring

Now you tell me, how could Siliconera be wrong?

In what way is Abel iconic? Hell, I can barely even remember him. He's just so boring to me. I mean, I get what they were trying to do with him (an MMA fighter with a connection to Seth), but it honestly just fell flat.

Not sure I'd say he was iconic, but Abel had a really simple old school SF design, he would've worked in SF2. I can imagine his stage being a wrestling ring or a gym with loads of French stereotypes cheering in the background, probably the Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomphe in the distance.

On the flip, juri has a good design and easier to play. She is also a bundle of "appeals" (multiple anime fetishisms budled into one). She winds up more popular than viper, thats ok. Lets wait to see how the dlc situation works out before we start rulling folks about because of popularity reasons.

Not only anime fetishisms, if I may add...

All of my friends know who Abel is, and I like him a lot too. Let's try to keep things civil here.

Honestly, the only SFIV newbies that I actually still remember off the top of my head are Juri & Crimson Viper. Everyone else I have to actively think about to remember. Rufus on the other hand is someone I'd rather forget, more so when we have superior characters like Yun & Yang.

Abel was fun to play as but calling any SFIV newcomer "iconic" is pretty silly - especially Abel & Seth who are super forgettable. Viper & Juri may one day reach that level but not for years.

also lol @ Gief being boring.

The more I think about it, the more that I hope that the new characters are their own beasts. Looking at the SFIV newcomers, I didn't really like a lot of them save for 3 (Crimson Viper, Juri, & to an extent, Hakan). I mean, why have Abel when you could have Alex (not an exact replica, sure, but I'm talking about the general idea behind their game plan)? Why have Rufus when you could have Yun & Yang (two characters that we did end up getting in AE)? Sure, Rashid has some El Fuerte sensibilities, but I'll give him a pass since I was hoping for Fuerte to get the boot.

One thing to note alot of the returning characters are changed enough you may end up liking them. V Skill and Trigger add a lot of personality to the characters. He'll some characters are overhauled enough such as Vega that is now a motion character. Same with Birdie and Charlie. The moves are also different for some characters such as R. Mika and Bison. The only characters that seem to be more of the same are Ryu, Chunli and Cammy.

To be honest, he kind of is. But this isn't because of his character or anything, it's because we see him so often. I'd be more than happy to trade Zangief for more interesting grapplers like Haggar or Hugo (more so Haggar).

Rufus looks stupid as hell but his gameplay design is awesome.
He was based on Yun & Yang in his gameplay, so him being fun to play comes as no surprise. But once the OGs came into SFIV, Rufus no longer had a reason to exist. Hopefully he fades into the backdrops of SF obscurity so Yun & Yang can prosper in that gameplay style.

Ok, so real talk guys. Just how slim are the chances of my man Guile making it into the main roster.

It's looking very slim for the initial 16, but a good chance for early DLC.

Personally, I would have him in there because he fills a gap and is story-related.

Zangief very much is boring and his play style slows matches down to a crawl.
Seriously, he's a total bore fest.
Where's Abel Capcom? The fans demand Abel. We need more not SF2 characters, because they're not boring.

Dream DLC roster:
Abel
Sodom
Juli
Juni
Alex
Urien
Seth
Rolento
Eagle
Rufus
Oro

^None of those characters were in SF2.

They need to bring back Haggar and make him the President of the United States in the Street Fighter universe.

But the least like SF2 character is also more likes than the most liked SF3 character, yeah?

So Dee Jay and T. Hawk are more liked than Ibuki and Dudley? I've only been into fighting games for about 1.5 years, and I had no clue who either of those two (and Fei Long) were prior. It took me months after getting SF to even find out they were from 2.

Something a lot of people seem to be missing is that yes, the SF2 cast is iconic, but the majority of people early-mid twenties and below, don't know or feel anything towards them or the game. The majority that do, got their love from 4. Yeah, Zangief got into Wreck it Ralf, but everyone involved in that movie probably knew him. Most kids, elementary to high, would struggle to tell you his name at best. If SFV is supposed to be a platform for the next 5-10 years, relying on tricks that only work on an older audience isn't going to help them much in the long-term.

Rufus was awful, I'm down for throwing him away and sticking with the twins.

grahhh this makes me want to suplex!!

Gief may be slow, but i love this lumbering threat that can knock off so much health in one grab.

i'd be down to replace him with a slower, retooled Alex in SF V, though. don't care much for Haggar / Hugo.

I've never gotten the love for Haggar.
Seems like a super boring character.
Bulky wrestling Freddie Mercury who is also an elected mayor, what's not to like?

He's a cool character. Gameplay wise he has nothing to offer to Street Fighter but still.

I REALLY like Abel, Viper and Juri. More then most of the SF2 Classic cast.

If I had to rank the sf4 newcomers...

1. Juri - love her design and love the psychotic personality
2. Abel - boring personally but super fun to play, at least for me
3. Viper - enjoyed playing her more in mvc3, but I still love her design(reminds me of KOF which I also love)
4. Haken - neat and odd design and unique play style, he's a ok in my book
5. El fuerte - completely indifferent to this character.
6. Rufus - hate him and his design. Can't stand him. Hope to never see him again.

Lol. comparing Gief to fuerte. Awesome.

To answer your ridiculous question, I'd have no problem with a fuerte retooled in the sf5 system.

A playstyle is a playstyle :p

If they changed Zangief significantly then I wouldn't have issue with him either, considering he wouldn't be the snorefest he is in SF4.

You forget Seth, Gouken, Oni, and Decapre. Where would you rank them?

A playstyle is a playstyle :p

Well, yes, by your logic of "I don't like fighting thing." Yes, a playstyle seems to be some binary thing of like and don't like.

Gief brings matches to a crawl because you have to be careful fighting him. It's a constant tug-of-war of attempting to keep him out, staying in range, and avoiding his throws and footsies. New players constantly lose to Gief because they don't want to think about this. They just want to be close, because he's big and slow, it should be easy.

Gief brings an entirely different mindset and set of strategies to a fight.

Everybody in this game already seems to be mega offensive. Gief would be a welcome change to that.

But people like you apparently don't want playstyle diversity like that because it's "boring," or "slows fights to a crawl."

Hope Capcom doesn't listen to people like you. Because THAT would be boring. Listening to new players or players that don't want to adapt that think zoning and grapplers are boring, or worse, cheap would be terrible for this game.

He brings as much to SF as bringing back any old character, really. Only he's never been in. I'm sure he wouldn't be an exact Zangief clone.

It's really new characters that bring the most new stuff.

You complain about diversity yet put it down yourself. Fuerte, Rufus etc. also bring different playstyle to the table and make the player adjust accordingly but they are well hated characters so it's okay to exclude them from the conversation? Okay.

If you like Zangief and his play style then that's fine, just say so. But don't make it sound you are speaking for playstyle diversity in general, because you are not.

What are you talking about? I said I would welcome Fuerte. I never said anything about Rufus.
