Yoooo, I just realized that the passport Big Boss gets at the end is supposed to say the name you made for the character. I named my guy Big Boss so I was really confused.

That's great XD. I used Snake for my avatars name so I found it pretty hilarious that his new secret identity would be the exact same codename he had used for many years. Plus when choosing a character to use on a mission I have a choice of either "Snake" or "Snake", the latter being the avatar.

I honestly thought the name we entered at the start could potentially unlock or reveal something (or perhaps trigger an interesting easter egg). I was going to enter BB's real name (John) and the year he was born but there was only an option for day/month so I ended up just settling on Snake.

Kaz is seriously a vindictive asshole this time around. I liked Peace Walker's bros for life Kaz a lot more.

I didn't think Kaz was so bad, really. I mean, when you think about it, most of his positions end up being justified.

He's right about Skull Face - the guy needs to die as he's planning to kill all English speakers. He's right about Quiet - she was sent to kill them all, either with bullets or parasites, and should never really have been allowed on the base. He's utterly right about Huey from the very start and ends up discovering his shit.

I mean, 'it's not paranoia if they're all out to get you', replace vindictiveness for paranoia and that's Kaz. He completely resists Venom's openness towards training child soliders. If Kaz had his way Eli would never have lived on the base and that whole mess would never have happened. He runs Mother Base and appears to do it well. In his spare time he retains a sense of humour despite everything that has happened to him and plans to open a burger franchise (or expand an existing one) when all this is done.

Honestly, the first half of the game is meant to make him look like the bad part of Venom's conscience compared to Ocelot's better angel, but as the game wears on Kaz looks more and more like he has the correct attitude considering what they deal with.

And in the end, he's betrayed, and he uses that to end up supporting the true hero of the whole series, ending up on the right side of history before he dies.

Kazahira Miller's a pretty cool guy.

Kaz doesn't get enough love. Especially his VA.

Considering the ludicrous amount of lines he had in this game, it's a mark of how good his performance was that I never truly got annoyed listening to him. Sure, I wished he'd shut up, but not because his voice or performance itself was ever dull or boring, just because there was simply too much chatter in the game.

He did a really great job. Hamburger tapes especially, where he shows a great sense of humour and timing.

This is why you can never go wrong with just putting your name and making your avatar your own face.
I always feel weird using my name in games, so sometimes I use variants from other languages (Greek, Arabic, Japanese, Spanish, etc).

But yeah, having an actual name that I was connected to made that scene make way more sense.

I felt it made more sense or fit him better after the M46 conversation where he basically says, "Big Boss can go to hell. I'll make his phantom stronger"...

Sort of explains why he was so intense heh

So how does Kaz get killed anyway? I remember it was assumed that Liquid did him in in the original MGS but it's been a very long time since I played that so I'm not sure. And at the end of MGSV during his post-credits conversation with Ocelot it is said that one of them will end up killing the other. Is it safe to assume that Ocelot killed him?

A year ago the buddy videos for Quiet and D-Dog were released.... we had so much hope, so much to look forward to. "When the time comes, I'll pull the trigger" and all that.

That has been stripped from us.

There will be no release from this pain.

You feel it too, don't you?

SUCH A LUST FOR DESPAIR

Ocelot killed him prior to the events of MGS1. The Miller you speak to is none other than....

LIQUID!

Snake couldn't have killed him because he assumed the Miller he was speaking to via Codec was the same man who trained him. Phantom Miller.

I dunno... that's basically what I did and it actually took me out of the twist even more. It felt like I was a child being given some sort of honorary super hero certificate, and it didn't even come with a pack of stickers.

Hahah what? It really HAS been a long time for you I guess :-P

Yeah general consensus here now is that Ocelot is the one who killed Miller, though they never say for sure in any of the games. It very well could have been Liquid.

Or the VOCALL COORD PARASITES.

Or he choked on a McDonnel's CQB (cheesy quarter-pound burger).

Yeah, I meant Liquid. Sorry about that. Edited now.

For sure. I created my Big Medic to look as close as possible to BB as I could, and even named him Big Boss.

You can imagine how confusing it was to watch the Truth... and how baffled I was for OG BB to get a new passport with the name "Big Boss".

The more I think about this (I've been feeling this since about halfway through Phantom Pain) the more I wish that if this game had to be two releases, that one was the open world in Africa and Afghanistan and the other was entirely in the hospital.

Wait--why did Kojima show (a version of) the final Big Boss scene in the GDC reveal trailer? The last clip at the end of it.

Because he had to put every cutscene into the trailers.

probably Ocelot's idea either way but I could see Eli being eager to be the one to actually do him in

which is funny because if it weren't for miller protecting eli and the kids, maybe ocelot would have done him before (or did he know Eli was Liquid, and he was just lying to Venom Snake?)

speaking of that, was Eli being Liquid ever actually confirmed before the history briefing during the credits? felt like such a weird way to confirm it, despite it appearing obvious (though I had my doubts after Ocelot said it wasn't him)

haha me too because I thought I was actually Big Boss and this was going to be my new appearance, so I wanted a face change that... wasn't really all that much of a change. changed hair type (bald with a mustache) so it was a bit of a disguise but I tried to make the face the same and choose the same scars that Venom Snake has

i didn't even realize that the passport at the end uses Venom's name rather than Naked's name because Naked's name is John and Venom's default name is John ;p

Nope. You're left to figure that out when you find out the truth. Until the game tells you 5 minutes later that is.

kaz was awesome imo...

venom had had a lot of awesome moments because of the situation but not a lot of great character scenes... maybe just a couple lines like the 'you're all diamonds' scene

but i was giddy every time i saw angry vengeful kaz walk into the scene

I was stunned when I realised I was halfway through Chapter 2 and I still hadn't seen certain things I remembered from the trailers. That Elegia trailer includes stuff from the Truth cassette tapes you only unlock after getting the true ending.

And then there are scenes like Demon Snake walking through the smoldering battlefield in Africa, or that prisoner getting executed in Camp Omega that aren't in the game at all.

speaking of demon snake, i'm sad there's no 'bloody demon ghoul' face or head option... from the launch trailer i mean, when it shows snake's face in different incarnations, before showing basically demon snake, then demon snake with a ghoulish sort of face, and then skull face... i mean, demon snake is there and skull face i guess is just skull face, but was that ghoulish face ever used anywhere? it's basically demon snake with a sort of half-skull face (or maybe it's just skull face with a horn covered in blood lol)

Kaz is the only one that feels like a character out of most.

I liked Kaz and his voice over a lot in MGS V, "What was it all for..? If the boss has some plan, what is it?" You can feel the anger and frustration in his voice.

Yeah this game was pretty much Metal Gear Kaz. Venom was such a non-presence, and Ocelot was super disappointingly boring. It felt like Kaz was the only one in DD who really gave a shit about anything that was happening at any given time.

Seriously, the more I think about it the more I can't get over how much Ocelot sucked in this game. He's a super bombastic presence in every single other game he appears in and is more or less the final boss of the whole series (chronologically), and here he is just a big fat nothing. AND HE DOESN'T EVEN SOUND LIKE OCELOT.

Huey is probably the next best character behind Miller. You really get the feeling that he's a dirty weasel afraid to own up to what he's done. Every single line he spoke made me want to punch him in the face a little bit more than the last, which made the fact that I knew he wouldn't die in this game even more frustrating.

This fucking sucks.

So I made a deal with my roommate. We can only play this game when the other person isn't home. Since we both have similar schedules, this means I can only really play when I'm off on fridays.

Tomorrow he is coming home at noon.

Ok, seriously, how did so many people miss the IV bag? Are you playing on a small TV or monitor, were you momentarily distracted both times you played through the section?

I'm seriously going to have look really hard next time I watch this. Done that whole sequence three or four times and thought the same thing every time. Nothing wrong with my TV size either.

Replayed one of the great boss missions of this game............ lol........ with the Skull snipers, and I just ran passed them all while tossing 3 grenades. Yay! Great bosses!

the dude kicks it out from under ischmael right in the middle of the frame yo how can you miss it?

i would play an ipad mcdonnels burger management spinoff

The XOF soldier slides an IV bag from under Big Boss and the camera zooms in on it...

Oh shit IT'S THE MISSING LINK IN THE METAL GEAR SAGA!

I've always just seen the guy paw at the puddle with his foot, I never noticed anything getting slid out from beneath Big Boss.

Typing that sentence just made me pissed all over again that we weren't really Big Boss in this game.

I honestly would prefer that we just got more Peace Walker styled bosses. than the crap that passes as boss fights in this game. At least in that one you had to disable a vehicle and take out its pilot to capture it.

Yes, Ocelot is disappointing, but I think he is a different character because self hypnosis and 2 + 2 = 5. Also, Troy Baker sucks as Ocelot.
