Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain PC performance thread

I think I saw someone say that they flipped some graphics settings, saved, and then flipped it back to regain their performance. Sounds weird, but who knows.

For whatever it's worth, I haven't really noticed any issues outside of the much discussed HBAO+ related drops.

I noticed that with Effects on High the water becomes very blurry and the quality of the thrown items arc is reduced as well.

Good find.

I actually like the "high" quality throwing arc better lol. I dig those hard squares

Yeah every time dust kicks up my framerate tanks, so I just leave that shit on high.

I remember getting a lot of drops in Ground Zeroes whenever the chopper was on the ground kicking up dust. Good thing they gave us an option to tone it down in TPP, because that doesn't happen now.

It would appear high uses lower resolution alpha across the board.. interesting.

It would be better if they had a separate option for water, as that doesn't really hog a lot of performance. Putting effects on Extra High makes almost no performance difference, regardless of weather conditions, until you start stirring up dust. They way it is now forces the super low res water alphas on you with no good reason.

Would be really interesting if it was possible to mod this.

I would like to show my brother TPP from the start like the way I first booted the game, but I am afraid that if I mess around with steam saves and it's folders I will not be able to bring it back like the way it was :-/.

So if anyone has a solution, I would greatly appreciate it.

Just make a backup of the folder.

Have a ps4 and a pc with an newer i5 16gb ram and r9 280x anyone know which platform would be better for me?

I have a 280X. If you intend to go for 60fps, you won't really be able to set the graphics that much ahead of the PS4, LOD will be the major differential. However, on PC you open yourself to cheaters and hackers. If you intend to play the multiplayer portion of this game I'd go for PS4.

That isn't exactly true. The PC version defaults to having SSR on surfaces and a number of other things the PS4 version does not even have even if one does not consider the AF and LOD (which are both pretty huge). Even just on high you are already exceeding the PC version in AO and shadows in addition to the AF and LOD.

I have not experienced any hackers in FOB yet...

There's SSR on the characters on PS4. From what I've seen the difference is not all that great when you're actually playing. The MAJOR graphical setting is extra high lighting, which on a 280X will make your framerate tumble from 60fps, so it's not worth it for me.

I've experienced a lot of hackers. From invincible invaders to people that put everyone on your base to sleep simultaneously. And it's easy to spot them, they're the ones that have 200k+ of every resource on the lists.

I just completed mission 6, and all of a sudden after saving and shutting down my PC, now when I start TPP back up the game crashes after 2 minutes like every time no matter if I wait 2 random minutes in main menu or if I am in a side op... Anyone else?

I have an i7 4770k gtx 760, 8gb ram.

311340 isnt the phantom pains save folder 287700 is

At least thats how it worked for me

EDIT: on second thought you have to back up 311340 and 287700 in order to clear the save from the game. If you remove only one you get a corrupt save and it reverts to a back up save; while if you remove the other nothing changes

No, 311340 is the save folder. I restored an earlier save myself using it.

I was having a fun time going through the game at a solid 60 fps through out on extra high everything and then it gets to
Huey testing out his new battlebot with its railgun
and the performance tanked to like 3 fps for that one scene. what.

Do you have HBAO+ enabled? People been suspecting things.

On chracters? That doesn't make sense. You must be thinking of SSS (sub surface scattering)

SSR is only on the PS4 it is only in certain scenes. The hospital and
huey's lab
are the only ones.

Yes, I misunderstood you.

There's a minimal amount of screen space reflections on MGSV anyway, compared to Ground Zeroes. Some people actually think it's bugged.

It is not bugged. Just a lower res implementation that the one in GZ (the game has less glossy surfaces than GZ for ovious reasons).

This particular jungle area behind a certain mansion in the Africa map is the most demanding area in the entire game, and (devoid instances of Extra High Effects dust clouds) it's really the only time my 980 Ti hasn't been able to maintain 60+ FPS @1440p; even @1080p my GPU is hitting 90% usage.

Images below are maxed out settings w/HBAO+ enabled...

1080p

1440p

Not complaining, just surprised to see it reach Crysis 3 levels of sustained GPU usage in this particular area @1080p, when I'm only averaging 40-60% everywhere else at the same res with a 60 FPS cap.

I've had the exact same experience with my 980Ti/i7 combo at 1440p.

There are no reflections on water or on puddles either. Definitely seems like it was pared back at least. It's honestly an almost unnoticeable effect in MGSV.

I've had some drops, aside from the cutscenes, mainly sometimes when Quiet goes by me while sprinting or some other action going on, the more jungle like area in mission 18 murdered my frame rate briefly but that also might've been with Quiet going by, don't remember and I should've watched my GPU usage. The sand storms and the helicopter haven't caused any issue.

I have a performance question concerning Ground Zeroes. I couldn't find that games' performance thread so I'll try here. So again, my question is about Ground Zeroes

Do any other people have trouble with G-sync and Ground Zeroes? I have G-sync turned on, but it doesn't really seem like it's working the way it should be. I use DSR and have capped the game at 45 fps but there is still is some judder when I rotate the camera. No screen tearing though, as far as I can tell. G-sync works fine in other games btw.

So do other people experience this too? A quick google search showed other people are experiencing trouble with G-sync too, but I couldn't find any solution. My hope is that it's a known issue and the fix is somewhere buried in this topic and someone still remembers it. It would be greatly appreciated!

I played through Ground Zeros on my Gsync monitor about a week before TPP release without issues. I dunno. Why are you capping the game?

I'd like to see a mod that allows you to always have the horse along with your typical buddy.

I'd like a mod that binds Venom's speed to the mouse wheel. Nothing yet on the Nexus. Hopefully someone can figure that out.

I was thinking about this as well. Splinter Cell Chaos Theory nailed "analogue" movement speeds with KB&M and I'm not sure why every stealth game doesn't just copy that idea. Hitting ctrl to walk slower works alright but I see these videos from the console versions and you can move much faster than that and still not be detected.

Works fine for me, are you sure the game is in proper full screen? This game has a weird thing where it'll sometimes revert to borderless full screen but will imply that it is in exclusive full screen in the graphics options. Only alt-tabbing in a certain way will get it back to proper full screen for me.

Try alt-tabbing in and out a few times, alternatively, enable G-Sync for windowed mode in the nvidia control panel (if you haven't already). Also, yeah, why are you capping the game at 45fps? You're on a G-Sync monitor, let it run wild :)

I get some random frame dips. For a few seconds it will go sub 30 out of nowhere, then back to 60. Probably because I'm on old drivers though. Nvidia taking forever to fix their windows 10 drivers for people with multiple GPUs -_-

Does anyone know how to force 16:9, I want to DSR at that aspect ratio and the Nvidia Geforce Experience is only giving me 16:10 resolutions to DSR to.

Have some strange slowdown in cutscene where Huey finish
Battle Gear
, hbao+ off, all setting on max.
Experienced the same, I thought it had to do with the lightning effects (had HBAO+ on and effects on High for the record)

I also experienced annoying judder when using DSR + Gsync on GZ (first and only game where I noticed this). Works fine in TPP though.

This is gonna sound strange, but I don't really like 60 fps actually. It's too fluid and "gamey" for me. I bought my G-sync monitor to crank up DSR as much as possible and still hold a judder-free and screentear-free 45 fps. I value IQ more than fps. And G-sync allows me to enjoy 45 fps without screentearing, judder or other issues. Because I crank up every graphical setting + DSR it also doesn't matter if I go below 45 :)

Well in the menu it says "Fullscreen".... But I didnt't know the graphics screen can fool you sometimes! I'll try ALT-tabbing, see what that does. And I cap my framerate, because even with G-sync I still prefer a constant overall framerate than having it fluctuate wildy between framerate value X and Y. It's just personal preference I guess. Anything above 45 fps is too "fluid" for me anyway. I've never liked it, on any monitor I've owned.

Yes! I'm not just seeing things!

+1, Cannot imagine why no games have stolen this idea on PC, its the best compromise for not having analogue movement.

OT, I remember reading someone saying you should un-cap TPP's framerate in-game with mods, and then cap it @ 60 using nvidia settings for TPP, is that still a thing I should do?

Fair enough, but yeah, with this game in particular it can sometimes do that - either try alt-tabbing then opening the game up by clicking the icon in your taskbar or try flicking between borderless windowed and full screen to try and get it back into true full screen. It happened to me about 5 or 6 times in the first week or so with the game, I'm not sure if they patched it or I've just been lucky and not had it occur again.

Either way, if you want to confirm G-Sync is on, you can enable the G-Sync overlay in the NVIDIA control panel:

Then it should show up in games where it is working.

Dropped effects to high and Quiet and other smoke/dust effects aren't occasionally killing my frame rate anymore, yay. Tried DSR and that still caused too many drops though. Didn't that work better before?

I had the same thing for half that cutscene and the entire cutscene where you extract code talker. I thought it was that my video card was overheating but everything before and after that ran perfectly fine. It's weird
