Street Fighter V Roster Discussion: P-P-P-P-PATTERN BREAKER

Oh wow. Hope it's true that we'll have an expanded roster for the next beta period. Not just to try other characters, but that also means that it would be an updated build with some balance changes implemented.

...but you know it's gonna be Kens everywhere.
It will be worse than usual since everyone and their mother will want to try Ken after the redesign. This will still be a fresh game if Urien and Alex are coming in, though. Between those two, Karin, Mika, Birdie and Nash the roster looks more diverse than ever for a mainline SF.

Nope, it's gonna be Mikas everywhere!

In Rashid build, Mika was ridiculously good..

Drop kick with massive range that is + (if charged a few frames), goes over lows and low mids, crush counter

Step kick (think guiles jump kick just faster), that is airborn, crushes lows and might be + on block

3 frame jabs (Pretty sure)

5 frame command throws

Easy confirms in to big damage

Massive range on ex command throw (bacdashed away and got grabbed after dash)

Ex rekka that has armor and is safe or close to safe after second hit

Splash that can alter her jump arc (safe is meaty)

Sick anti air air throw (ex is crazy good)

Only her vskill was a little bad, but even that is useful in some matchups

Her vtrigger is nice, but noy as good as some others (at least before setups are found)

It's not more diverse than SF IV or SF2. It's about on par with 3rd strike so far if we're talking about fighting styles representation.

Someone is getting the vanilla SG Cerebella treatment. Just give her an alt with the hair down and nickname her "The Goddess".

Dayum

I was never all that impressed by SFIV's initial roster and SF2 is an older (very susceptible to rose tinted glasses) that includes Blanka, Deejay and T.Hawk. I am really going to like SFV's roster if it does include Urien and Alex even if the blondes are out of control. There is a decent amount of alpha representation, 3S representation, SF2 representation and the new characters are looking better than SFIV's offerings.

Oh I forgot to say that the air throw is a huge flip that crosses over the opponent, so think hugo's heavy back breaker to escape corner, just faster and with less recovery...

Oh and her 3/4 frame far reaching chainable c. Lk is so low profiling that she is laying on the damn floor.. I do think she will be normalized haha

I thought you were talking about playstyles. Since you aren't you're completely right.

Id say rheyre both pretty diverse

Really looking forward to playing Mika. I don't expect her to be close to top tier by the time the game releases, but I like playing grapplers and she looks like a ton of fun. She's probably gonna end up as my secondary.

If the game ends up moddable like 4 I want to see Birdie swapped in for Nadeshiko as Mika's assist. His redesign was made for flying peaches.

Exit: wait... is it "shooting peach?" Could've sworn it was "flying peach" in Alpha. Well, fuck me.

Necalli is Aztec.

sounds fantastic, really can't wait to play her

THIS. I was like, wait, that's a LIGHT attack? With that range and speed? Plus it low profiles?!

There's no doubt in my mind that Mika is going to get nerfed, especially her safe armored ex move. Also there's a misconception about her dropkick. Whether its charged or not its never plus. Its safe in that she can always block after it but if she tries to press another button after it she'll just counter hit.

I know the game is far from done but, who do you guys think the top players will use after all is said and done?

I really want to see who Justin Wong and Gamerbee settle on. And who Infiltration's pocket troll pick is...

It's really hard to say what's good in this game with stuff like Ryu's parry, Ken's run, the different V-Trigger power ups and who knows what's to come. I do want to see how far you can take the parries, though.

If this past year's EVO is any indication, Infiltration might wind up with like 7 pocket troll picks... :P

You think it will be Street Fighter IV all over again?

Ryu and Ken are like 1a and 1b among popularity. I've been playing Ken since the sega genesis days I remember being worried he wasn't going to make the roster ;_; but based Ono delivered. So yeah the ken army will be there making Verendus go nuts.

Off topic I want a evil dlc package Akuma and Juri.

Too early to predict, IMO. In the early going though I could see there predominately being a lot of Ryu, Ken, and Cammy because they're familiar and always strong.

Kinda early but I wouldn't be surprised if justin goes for birdie or one of the new characters. He got a habit of choosing odd characters. He doesn't go for the top tier outside of 3s chun.

If the game really is as "basic" or whatever some players called it, then this could be an option for many top players.

Whenever I mashed throw after blocking the drop kick, I would get thrown by R mika. I won't rule out the possibility that I messed up, but I played like 100 games against R mika and always lost after blocking the drop kick, either when trying to mash jab or throw.

Re: basic, that reminds me of a post I forgot to respond to a few days ago. Someone described Birdie as "gimmicky." I get what they meant, but really I perceive all characters as individually more gimmicky than in 3 and 4. What I mean is that the former had a strong universal mechanic in parrying while the latter had one in focus attacks. These were used similarly regardless of character selection and their mastery was essential for high level play.

In V, the inputs for mechanics are similar between characters but their uses are very different. V-reversals, skills, and trigger are all situationally variable from one another. To me, that makes for a much more interesting game.

And that isn't to knock III because parries are pretty fucking awesome.
Not a big fan of focus attacks, though.

Assuming that Alex & Urien are in, what do you guys think would be their V-Triggers & their Supers? Also, would Alex be more about grappling & would Urien retain his charge moves?

I want to see Justin Wong say that whoever Gamerbee picks is like one of the worst characters in the game.

And then GB would master the character and destroy Justin when he settles for the inevitable divekick char.

Alex, total grappler

V-Skill: Some kind of move with huge stun (Headbutt?)

V-Trigger: An improved version of Spiral D.D.T. (very fast jump+grab in the ground, should work on crouching opponents)

C-A: Hyper Bomb

Urien

V-Skill: I really don't know, but something to charge his V meter fast to gain access to

V-Trigger: Aegis Reflector

C-A: Tyrant Punish

Alex:

V-Skill: Air Stampede (gotta give him some way to deal with projectiles; you could control the range by holding back or forward)

V-Trigger: Stungun Headbutt ("move" V-Trigger similar to Vega's. A grab that causes a massive amount of stun)

Critical Art: Hyper Bomb (We've yet to have a true grab CA yet and Hyper Bomb's hella iconic)

Urien:

V-Skill: His ground pound taunt from 3S; creates a pillar of fire that works as a makeshift DP and powers up his next special on hit

V-Trigger: Aegis Reflector (no reasoning necessary)

Critical Art: Temporal Thunder (a projectile CA would make his moveset more versatile overall)

Mikas CA is a grab if i remember correctly.

not liking all this news about people getting nerf'd already.

It's not really being nerfed if the game is still in beta. I mean, it won't be officially released for another few months. It's technically not even a completed game yet. It's hard to call balancing the characters pre-release "nerfing," really.

Yeah, they've said that ideally the only time they'll nerf a character is if something about them is broken. Otherwise they'll focus more on making other characters better rather than pulling one specific character backwards.

You underestimate Kens popularity and how disliked Mika is. For a lot of people its either Ryu or Ken they play.

Brah, I was joking around.

Inside info:

-There will be another character reveal before Brazil (So before October 10th)
-There will be around 10 characters in the 2nd Beta (So maybe Rashid, maybe not)

Before Oct 10th? I know that we suppose to hear something about Laura on October 8th. That would be very interesting if Capcom representative is right about it. If your source is correct, then we might hear something on Oct 2nd.

Oct 2nd > Oct 8th > Oct 10th. That really sound like a LOT of information in two weeks. We will see about that.

Capcom representative at Call of Ragnarok this weekend. I have to point out that ofc he isreall vague answering, but he does use "I am pretty sure" about this info. And he said he knew everything about characters coming etc.

Hmmm. I'm going with my zero expectation for now.

Rashid stuff:

In Rashid build, Mika was ridiculously good..

Thank you so much for those informations! I hope that they wouldn't nerf Rainbow Mika that much in final product! ;) It would be nice to have a viable grappler that I would like to use.
