MGSV, I feel dirty playing this game with how easy they made it for you in the game. Regen health, an overpowered arsenal of weapons, supply drop more ammunition, fulton, limited enemies on alert, marking on enemies, and the blind enemies.

Of course, apart from the awkward silent last 2 minutes and the random music and the emotionless snake looking at the mountains and snapping pics of the surroundings while skullface delivers his lines dramatically.
But the last part, I think there's some role playing required.

Please stop the hyperbole. And the funny thing is I've literally ran through levels in 3 & 4 just to see if there were any repercussions and I could literally do that everywhere outside of boss fights.

Fun fact: from the time you start infiltrating OKB Zero to when you finally defeat Sahelanthropus, Snake doesn't speak a single word. It's astounding.

Oh I know. I just like the design philosophy being as open as it is. Kojima's always been good for providing these weird options for approaches and I think V really expands on it.

As it is, MGS2 EE is great except for the bosses which are too difficult.

You have no idea of the budgeting of the game. We know that Hayter was not cheap from previous games. The existence of unused lines of dialogue in the pc version indicates the relative silence of BB was a design choice. People need to untangle their dislike of Kiefer from the budget issues over the game.

David Hayter was in a radio interview about a year ago implying that the reason he might have been dropped was that he was asking for too much money.

Total Stealth should have at least been an option for every mission as it's literally two checked options: no reflex and game over on alert. That they made Total Stealth missions count towards the total mission count was sketchy as hell.

I think the systems being more open to killing probably ties into the fact that Big Boss at this point in his arc would've probably had no problem with lethal options.

I never said he was equivalent or a cheap hire.

Merely that it is not as simple as Kiefer was expensive = relatively silent protagonist.

This isn't about whether Kiefer was good or not. But it is clear that the design to have him quiet is intentional. This may have been why they went with him, or it just happened that way. However when you have entire segments of game missing it is abundantly clear where the actual cuts were made and it was not in the voice acting. Kiefer did not cause the budget issues.*

*It is hypothetically possible that the decision to hire him and then not use many lines was perceived as wastefulness by Konami execs but that would be highly speculative.

past mgs games never punished you for going lethal aside from a ranking at the end of the game which most people don't give a shit about

So this one time quiet was not found at her cell, right after the quarantine bullshit started. Though that was the cue to her interrogation CS but no subsecuent visits to MB have her on the cell like usual.

I got the Quiet vs scrubs CS twice tho, which hopefully is a bug.

The series has always been open to player choice when it comes to stealth or non stealth approaches. MGS5 allowing people to run and gun is nothing new.
I just replayed the series and my primary weapons were all lethal and my kill counts were absurd.

In addition, of course the game they are making in 2015 is different from what they made in 1998. Things change.

The story kept me interested but theres never this "oh shit" moment. The only such moment in MGSV for me was when the doctor says "9 years" and when snake looks at his missing arm. I mean, the whole true ending thing certainly got an "oh shit" out of me, but not in the same way (and for many people a really bad/angry "oh shit").
I think a big part of this has to do with the fact that MGSV was trying to be all dark and shit. Probably the biggest reason though is because the music sucks. Ludvig Forssell ruined everything.
I guess the Paz and Quiet endings were okay...
the trailers were more metal gear than the game itself. I hope I change my mind on this later and look at the game in a different light, but for now I'm gonna join the "disappointed" club.
EDIT: I will say though that mission 43 had me on the verge of tears. I think actually shed a single tear. That's never happened to me (maybe it did for TLOU's opening). Shit was amazing

Off the top of my head, child soliders, the mission where you have to kill your men, the medical room stuff, all the quiet stuff. there's a lot more. the most emotional affecting metal gear for me ever. the ending itself was anticlimactic to say the least but a lot of these scenes I was not expecting.

The entire Paz subplot including cassettes, and "Shining Lights, Even in Death" (especially the three scenes at the end) were all incredible, music included, and gave me goosebumps. The "feels" are on par with, or exceeding, anything from past MGS titles. The "V Has Come To" theme in Shining Lights is amazing.

Honestly, MGSV has some of the most genuine emotional moments in the series.

EDIT: Oh, and I loved the "12 Angry Men" moment in Huey's trial and exile. "It's not our place to judge our enemies." I love that scene, and I'd like to note the cinematography is especially on point (all one tracking shot that rises and falls from the accusers to the convicted).

I spoke about this the other day, but the Paz subplot blew me away on multiple levels. It's probably one of my favorite sequences in videogames.

First, it's a neat concept. The horn in Venom's head is pressing on his brain and causing him to hallucinate. The hallucination is fueled by his PTSD, his guilt over failing to save Paz, his love for Paz and what she meant to him, and a desire for inner peace. He's soul-searching, in other words, trying to come to terms with the past and find peace in the present. The hallucination is the form this takes.

Second, it's meaningful. Venom is talking with his heart, and his heart is trying to tell him something. The final tape is about mercy. It tells him he can kill Skull Face, Huey and Zero, but it won't bring anyone back. Revenge leads nowhere. Venom is reflecting on this and realizing the value of moving forward with mercy.

It's especially striking if you complete the Paz subplot right before Huey's trial and exile, like I did, since it contextualizes why he spared Huey in that moment. I just love it. So good.

Yep, i'd say Shining Lights, Even in Death is one of the best moments so far this gen. Especially the bottom floor room where all the soldiers line up and salute Boss as he shoots them.

A more silent Big Boss is fine with me, I kinda like the idea that he's a man of such stature that he has other people who speak for him. There is however a difference between silent and absent, and we got far too much of the latter. You'd think he would at least have something to say to Skull Face during their numerous encounters, but nope, it's like Big Boss just left the scene.

Finally, after 132 hours, I finished the main story of the game and FUCK, it really feels like the production of the game was suddenly halted, Chapter 2 for me felt like a re-arrangement of pieces that were supposed to go during Chapter 1 plus fillers and that made feel so frustrated because it felt like the story of the game could've been a lot better with a better pacing.

I agree with the people who feel that the sexualisation of Quiet was way over the top, specially because in my case I really felt a bond with her having her as my buddy (she just saved my ass so many times) so all those poses, showers, etc, felt unnecessary and made me think that Kojima not only doesn't age physically, but mentally too, I mean, Quiet had so much potential to be a fantastic female character like The Boss. Is so sad.

And the gameplay, perfect, fantastic, I approached many missions in so many different ways it really speaks a lot of the talent and dedication used to create each town, post, etc, this game was as much as a stealth game as I dreamed of.

And after watching it on youtube, I really want to play Mission 51

I don't think that's true. Kaz appears to only guide Venom's arm. Venom does the shooting, and the reloading. It's a nice moment because they're taking revenge together.

I recall reading you can shoot during the long pause. If you don't, though, you get what I got, where Kaz makes you shoot. Venom is still part of this, of course, but it shows he's not necessarily on the same level as Kaz. He hesitates. And this is all a moot point, anyways, since the whole point is Venom becomes more benevolent as the game goes on.

Side note about Huey being exiled in the ocean: Kind of ironic how he's exiled to the ocean and later drowns in a swimming pool. Don't know if that was intentional but... Irony.

The entire Paz subplot including cassettes, and "Shining Lights, Even in Death" (especially the three scenes at the end) were all incredible, music included, and gave me goosebumps. The "feels" are on par with, or exceeding, anything from past MGS titles. The "V Has Come To" theme in Shining Lights is amazing.

Honestly, MGSV has some of the most genuine emotional moments in the series.

EDIT: Oh, and I loved the "12 Angry Men" moment in Huey's trial and exile. "It's not our place to judge our enemies." I love that scene, and I'd like to note the cinematography is especially on point (all one tracking shot that rises and falls from the accusers to the convicted).

Paz's moment/ending wasn't just "okay", IMO. It actually is a pretty "oh shit" moment, at least for me it was. I actually believed she was alive and I was interested if she would ever recover from the amnesia the more you showed her the photographs. When the reveal came that she was nothing more than a hallucination/dream/whatever I actually said, "oh shit, she's not real?" out loud and I couldn't believe it. At the same time, it's kind of shitty because there was potential for a post-GZ Paz being on your side and that would have been really interesting as she knew where Cipher was and by extension Zero.

It was definitely an "oh shit" moment because of how believable it is and when you find out it's a hallucination you're like "what the fuck" and you're conflicted on if it was a good thing they did it that way or a bad thing and like the loss of potential interesting story development vs the implication of not everything Venom sees/experiences are necessarily reliable -- an unreliable perspective is born from Paz being a hallucination.

Yeah haha you guys are absolutely right. My post was pretty much straight up confirmation bias. MISSION 43 MAN. How could I forget? Shit had me saluting the whole time. Plus it nailed that horror feeling. And the story was told so well all in real time organic gameplay. YOOOO.
Paz's subplot was fantastic too. The only thing is I had it somewhat spoiled which ruined it for me. The music that played in her last cutscene was great too. Mission 43 would've been perfect to have the main MGS theme.
Skull Face's death was also amazing. Seeing Kaz turn back to his pre-DD self and GZ snake definitely gave me feels.
Haha wow thanks guys for making me like this game again. Just hearing so much negatively got to me.

I probably don't need to point this out, but if you don't do anything, only Kaz shoots, and Venom's reflection in the form of Paz questions all of this. Venom grows in this regard.

On a side note, the gif makes me realize Skull Face is the zombie from the first Resident Evil.

Venom's not exactly fighting back to prevent it from happening, so he's as much of an asshole as Kaz.
